It’s our own version of 4th of July, Canada Day, St George’s Day (England) St David’s Day (Wales), Waitangi Day (New Zealand) etc. from a Dubliner

It’s a nice clip about St Patrick, but as others have pointed out, it fails to explicitly explain or reveal why we Irish celebrate him, specifically, and why St Patrick’s Day is the national holiday (unlike any number of other historical events, such as Easter Sunday, marking The Rising). It’s also of note that St Brigid is equally accredited with using the shamrock/clover’s three-leaf stem to explain the core triumvirate at the heart of Christianity to the then still largely paganistic people of Ireland. Perhaps there are other sources that can reveal why the day was seized upon as a national holiday. Lastly, it’s worth pointing out that although other countries have bigger parades, such as the huge one in New York, they’re largely sterile events that lack the energy and character - with a dash of mayhem - as that found in Dublin, which remains the best parade, at least for authenticity alone.

The "snake banishment" idea is more symbolic than literal. There never were any snakes in Ireland, but the snake symbolizes the wicked ways he drove out when converting the people to Christianity
