Egalitarianism works in some cultures and I don't see why it shouldn't work (as a basic idea) in our own. It would solve a lot of problems if we lived in a culture where people were more interested in helping one another than competing against one another. I don't know what system could replace runaway capitalism, but I have some ideas for alternative cultural attitudes that could change things.

I travel 2 hours a day to work and travel 2 hours back home. I work 12 hours a day 5 days a week. They say it is a 9 to 5 job. But the reality is we work more than 8 hours per day. On the contract they say to add a bit more overtime without pay. So it ends up as 8 to 8. And I'm not even a morning person. I am spiritually exhausted.

And then they max out their credit cards to dine out everyday and buy shit they don’t need. Next get a new car and finance it for 7 years. The American culture of DEBT is the problem. People don’t know how to budget their money & live below their means.

+New Future Builder I changed my life completely. First I gave away everthing I owned, less two suitcases, and went to South Africa to do volunteer work. I came back two years later and took a low paying job that I enjoy still. I mastered my skills and saw my pay increase slowly. I know live modestly but comfortablt and still love my work. I wake up every day excited to be who I am and continue my life as I know it. I do what is in front of me and let the Universe take care of the rest. I want to add that I made these changes out of necessity and not voluntarily. Life kicked me hard to make me move forward. My only regret is that I didn't hear the whispers and waited for the big kick. Don't wait. Listen to the small voice that is You. Take your own advice.

Few people it seems find this Convergence, a term Chris Guillebeau used in his book "$100 Startup". Most people it seems have a professional life not even remotely resonant with their heart or personality (A Bullshit Life(TM) - a term I coined ;-) Yet few others have hobbies or interests that offer little value to others (or are structured in such form). I am thinking about a few projects that MIGHT provide this Convergence for me, but it is unlikely these will work for you since people are different and everyone has to take the effort and risk to seek out their own path. There is also the danger of self-delusion or misdirection, hence I will need to test my assumptions about what I want to do, if it's financially viable. So it's a lot of work and full of risk. Maybe that's why most people settle, most people chose unhappiness over uncertainty (Tim Ferriss's phrase). I may also fail a few times before I find my path.
