One of the only Vsauce videos where the title question is actually answered in the first 2 minutes without making you worry about your existential identity 200 years from now
That is literally the reason why he makes these videos. He just does it because he wants to and everyone's just like 'out of all the billions of hours uploaded to RU-vid this is the best thing to watch.'
Partially deaf and can't smell. I find the fact that people can (at least how I see it) taste things without ever putting it in their mouth absolutely bizarre and super cool.
There's something weitd about someone not even knowing how it feels like... like its not your fault at all and of course you don't know but I STILL find it so frustrating that you don't. I wish you did 😭 Im glad that works for you for understanding but of course people can clearly differentiante smell and taste. Smell only works when you're inhaling and it does not feel in your mouth like taste does. Also you can't just do something like moving food with your tongue around to get more taste or swallow quickly to get little taste, it just depends on how you're breathing I wish you could smell :( there has been nothing worse in my life that my awful eyesight which I had to pay 3 months of wages to fix after suffering with it for more than a decide while others didn't have to suffer and got it for free always. I know how it feels like to feel biologically inferior... except I always had some eyesight... you have no smell at all. This is such a long comment and pretty useless too. No problem I guess
I also can’t smell, and have never been able to as far as I’m aware. It’s likely I lost it due to a head injury when I was 3 years old, but yeah, it’s crazy to think people can know what food tastes like before actually tasting it, such as spicy food. However, there are benefits to it as well, for example I never have to know what poop smells like, all I know is that it smells bad, lol
Why do we have two nostrils? > answers that question in the first minute then proceeds to talk about completely other stuff you didn't even know you wanted to know. This is why I love vsauce.
no. I know some people who smell different... dont take this the bad way sorry if it sounds weird, it happens when i sit next to them or so. geez i must sound like weirdo
Samuel ONeill If her dad gave birth to her and made out with a guy, he's not gay, he's bisexual. Don't mix it up. So many ppl call bisexual people gays.
Cristian Martinez I think someone deleted a reply. If you look, the name at the beginning of the comment isn’t anywhere here, meaning it got deleted. Or a name got changed and they are crazy.
At certain times of the year, especially when the weather gets cooler, there are always certain days that smell like times during childhood for me. It's not an everyday or even all day thing. I can be outside doing whatever and then there's a sudden smell, almost a feeling, that causes me to remember that same smell/feeling of playing outside when I was a child. I'm sure that it's due to a specific combination of the weather, temperature and the surrounding environment. It's always a very pleasant and calming experience.
Fun facts - based upon this video, when you smell a roomate's nasty fart, molecules - PHYSICAL PARTICLES - that were moments ago clinging inside his ass, are now in your nose.
I've always wondered why one nose blocks and the other is okay interchangeably. Thanks Michael. Even after so many years, you're still teaching me things
"Hey Vsauce, Michael here. Why do you have two Nostrils?" *Minutes later* How does space smells? *Minutes later* Incest *Minutes later* Universe reacts to you
P8 Studios On the contrary, because smell can be defined as our perception of molecules in the air, an argument could be made that it would not smell, but ultimately it depends on your definition of the word "smell." If "smell" is defined as merely the presence of said molecules in the air, then the burning tree would indeed smell. The word "smell" looks weird now. Being smart is hard.
you can always count on a vsauce video to turn the simplest of questions into a deep and existential video that leaves you both with more knowledge than before but also more questions
I mean we usually count ears and nose and mouth as the holes in the face, maybe eyes even though there's eyeballs. But our skin is riddled with tiny holes producing sebum. So we do have a lot, lot of holes.
michael: we need a strong nostril and a weak nostril also michael: this nebula smells like raspberries and rum also also michael: smelling protects us from incest also also also michael: olfactory is a fantastic word
I'm anosmic and whenever my friends say something like "Something smells here, do you smell that?" they react as if I was blind and they said "See you later" 😂
It's insane how this video is 11 years old and i couldn't even tell that it's an old video, if you tell me this video was made yesterday I'd believe you
Me: Hey Vsause, why do we have two nostrils? Michael: One particular type of high energy molecule found all over interstellar space are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These guys are the result of combustion.
Recreational vsauce use is ok in moderation but using it as an emotional crutch will be detrimental to you in the long run. One day you're fine the next day you've a crippling vsauce dependency, relying on it just to function properly. It is already a problem if one of the first things you do when you wake up is light u- eh pick up your phone and watch vsauce. Or can't get to sleep without vsauce. Please, get some help before it's to late , to many families have been destroyed and we've lost to many people to vsauce addiction already :(
I’m an elementary teacher, and Michael’s energy and enthusiasm continues to be an inspiration for my teaching style. His videos actually follow a similar “formula” as my own explicit instruction. Pretty neat!
WARNING! Carry on reading, or your soul will be taken, even if you read the word "warning"! There once was a man named Duke Hunapon. He was lazy, and very uncaring. He always wore a jacket, no matter how warm it was outside. He had an older brother named Michael who always bossed him around. One day, Michael was killed, and it affected Duke greatly. He went insane and started murdering people. Soon, he got into a fight with someone and got killed. Now, he roams around as a tall skeleton with a red shirt, and the exact same hoodie that Duke wore. This skeleton was known as "Swapfell Papyrus", and he will kill you if you don't post this on 15 comment sections of any website before your bedtime. If you fail, and you wake up when he's in your room, your death will be slow and very painful. A girl named Lily Lilupanin read this, and didn't listen. She was (EEE) and killed in her sleep. If you copy and paste this on 15 comment sections of any website before your bedtime, Swapfell Papyrus will make sure you feel safe."
Hmm... So if we didn't have two balls, we wouldn't be able smell as well either, probably? * dramatic music starts * How do women smell? Can they smell without balls?
Us: "Why do we have two nostrils?" Michael: "Good question, but what does the inside of your nose smell like?" Us: "..." Michael: "And what about incest?" Us: *"..."*
It's interesting how smells and memories are tied together like that. The strong nostalgic feeling you get after a certain whiff. Sure does take you back quite unlike anything else.
If an anosmic person was to get their sense of smell back in a room with no scents (like a completely sanitized room), would they smell what's in their nose?
Vsauce in a nutshell 1.We all know that_________does this 2.Or does it? 3.VSAUCE MUSIC 4.As you can see________is pretty simple but it isnt 5.CRAZY MATH AND SCIENCE 6.So is that really so 7.According to Stanford University__________ 8.MORE CRAZY MATH AND SCIENCE 9.THE CONCLUSION 10.And as always, thanks for watching.
We have places to go specifically to SEE something (art, sports, etc) or to HEAR things (music, speakers etc) or even TASTE or TouCH things. Do we have any places we pay money to go SMELL things?? Like an exhibit of exotic Smells or something?
So technically when we think we smell the same or smell something the same it’s or noses reacting to the object and relating it to another object because it’s reacting the same
I am anosmic, meaning that I was born without a sense of smell. My brain is oversize for my head, so the brain casing filled up where the upper chamber of the sinus cavity should be, so the olfactory nerve sensors never formed. Smells and spatial information are stored in the same place in the brain (I forget the name). Since I never recorded smells in that region of the brain, there was more room to store spatial information. As a result, I was a whiz at geometry. It was really weird. As soon as I saw a picture or understood the problem to be solved, I instantly new the answer without trying. But from what people have told me, I'd give it up just so I could smell a woman's perfume
***** It taste like food does for you when you have a bad cold. I taste sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Foods don't remind me of memories, like it does for you. I was driven to extreme tastes: cold or spicy. The spicier the better. And I used to love ice cream, but can't have it now. Sushi is my favorite
Hi Larry! Has anosmia ever led you to hazardous situations? Like, for example, not being able to tell that something's burning, or that the water you're drinking is not clean?
