This is so helpful. I’m a math tutor and I don’t like teaching that “this is just the way it is, so learn it.” I want them to know how we got there. This is one of those concepts that I never really learned why it did that so now I can explain it piece by piece to them!

Thank you for this. Khan Academy is great, but sometimes they assume too much knowledge on the part of the learner and don't fully explain things. This video is just what I needed to understand why multiplying by the reciprocal works! You just earned yourself a subscriber.

Thank you so much for solving a long standing mystery of mine! When I was introduced to this "keep, switch, flip" method (although in Cantonese we didn't call it that way but nonetheless we learned the same method), I didn't comprehend what was going on, and why does it work. Of course, when you are 10 years old you don't tend to ask deeper questions such as "why does this method actually work?". Or at least the education method or culture didn't encourage this kind of questions from students. They tended to adopt the "do what I tell you to do or you get punishment" kind of way to teach children back in the days. So we had tons of homeworks, did hundreds of these fractions calculations, but never learned to ask the single most important question behind the progression of science: WHY? Glad to see the children today now are very much encouraged to ask why. Education progressed too.

So basically it's a complex fraction solution dumbed down into a keep switch/change flip solution, and then further dumbed down into the butterfly method that high school kids still even misuse on multiplying fractions instead.......Great. A fascinating phenomenon that shocks the stars and cosmos alike.

My car has a Trunk Monkey in it, and it Keeps, Switch, and Flips all day long. lol To anyone on here. Don't ever feel to proud or too old that you cannot stoop to this early day in our lives education, because the way the Gov treats us, we have to be just as smart as five year-olds just to beat the system that's slowly eroding our freedom of Movement, never mind our rights... Another thing is, It's never ever too late to learn anything. Young and old alike. I'm in my fifties and getting quicker to sixty in about 3 years from now. Anyway, I'm still looking at fractions and things, I can use in my computer programs. So maybe it's a wise idea to stay educated even through stuff, long forgotten. You will one day need it. So will I. Our freedom depends on it.... Thanks MR. J for the Awesome Work...

hello... well, it certainly is easier to just work the division that convert into a multiplication problem...but now that you've fully explained the concept of: keep, switch, and flip, it now becomes necessary to go over this explanation a few times in order to really understand what is being said...Thanks.. and peace...

ok, I was taught a different way of doing this mine was 3/5 divided by 1/4 then we changed it by 3/5 *4/1 = 12/5 = 2 2/5. all we had to do was flip the last fraction. We never did any of the rest. Is this a longer way of doing it?

Hello. I know this is an old comment. But I just wanted to answer this. So the video explains how and why the "keep, switch, flip" solution works. And what you commented does show the same thing at the end of the video.

Hi Mr. J. Do we always FLIP the right fractions. Is it always to the right that gets flipped? Or does that matter. Not sure. I get complete different answers. I hope you or someone can tell me if it's always the right that gets flipped. Just do I know. Thanks
@user-el6kl9vz8e
@user-el6kl9vz8e 12 дней назад
Yes! The right fraction always gets flipped while the left stays the same. Keep (Keeps the left fraction the same) --> Switch (Division to multiplication sign) --> Flip (Flips the right fraction) Hope this helps.
