PTFE works both as a lubricant and a sealer. In many applications ( industrial and otherwise) it’s primary job is to reduce friction. But when it comes to plumbing , friction is not our only concern. Try using some oil (WD40 for eg. PTFE by the way) on a fitting and tighten up and see if it will not still leak. Although when you take apart a fitting you may not see the PTFE there it still was there covering the nicks on the threads and falling between the threads , providing a seal. So in this case seal is it’s primary job and lubrication secondary.
@andrew1898
@andrew1898 Год назад
Teflon does not work as a lubricant. Once you cover the threads and start twisting it your adding mechanical friction to that joint as it rolls the Teflon up. Dope is a lubricant and PTFE dope is both. So many day 3 helpers thinking they know!
@Ellron23
@Ellron23 Год назад
Wd40 is oilyish but is not an "oil" or lubricant at all
@Ellron23
@Ellron23 Год назад
@@andrew1898 ptfe tape definitely makes joints easier to tighten, because it reduces the coefficient of friction between the mating surfaces. Call that what you want, but typically we call compounds that reduce friction lubricants. Don't belive me? Spin together a bare pvc joint as tight as you can with your hands. Then tape the male thread and try it again. You'll notice you get farther with the taped joint, because Teflon tape acts as a lubricant in addition to providing some sealing action.
@bloodleader5
@bloodleader5 Год назад
@@Ellron23 You don't need tape on PVC threads, though. The seal on those threads is achieved by hard tightening to deform the threads. @ag95mboy
@ag95mboy Год назад
Nah the pressure created on the tapered threads creates the seal. Haven’t you used the copper unions that seal without rubber gaskets? Metal on metal can be watertight, but it’s just difficult. Teflon has the one of the lowest (if not the lowest) friction rating of any solid. That’s why the amount of wraps is fairly important as well, but not super crucial unless you’re doing outside of the 4-6 wraps.

The only way is old school. Old school is the best school. Dope only. The threads make the seal not the dope or tape. Dope is used to lubricate the threads so they make up tighter. People always use to much tape and it acts like a wedge and makes is so the threads can't be made up tight enough. And Teflon is made for not stick purposes and when you get threads expansion and contraction the joint can loosen. Learned this from the OG ole school pipefitters from NYC. Local 638 👍👍👍👍

This is 100% incorrect. (machinist here). Standard 60° vee threads have a built-in leak path at the major/minor diameter of the threads. There is space between the crest and valley of the threads. If it doesn't have this then the threads will bind and be unable to threads together. Google a 60° vee thread form. The Teflon tape is to fill the voids left by the thread form. This is a layman's explanation.. threads are actually very complicated.
