Why do we need solid lubricant...
When heavy machinery is to be operated at high speed and moderate load or at very high load and low speed.
the liquid lubricants can not be useful because due to high load and low speed, the film of liquid lubricants can not in between sliding surfaces.
When the machine parts are not easily accessible I.e. if the design is intrinsic, then use of liquid or semi-solid lubricants fail.
When machine is at high working temperature and pressure and hence under such conditions combustible oils are unsuitable.
Solid lubricants ate used either in the form of dry powder or mixed with water or oil.
The solid lubricants if not manufactured properly sometimes contains grain particles, which may damage delicate parts or surface of machine.
Application of Solid lubricants:-
1- IC engines where a tight film is desired between the piston rings and the cylinder for increasing compression.
2- Commutator bushes of motors and electronic generators where contamination of grease or lubricating oil is unacceptable.
Most Important Examples are:-
*Graphite and
Molybdenum-di-sulphide..
other examples are mica, Teflon , chalk etc.
