How did the whole "don't wash your locs" trope even start? So annoying. And I'm always surprised by the number of people who start locs with zero research. I searched online for MONTHS and interviewed SEVERAL people before choosing the right loctition to start my journey. This is an important decision. You can't go into this journey all willy nilly.

I think it began as advice to new ppl in the Loc Journey who's hair still hast locked fully. When I started I washed my har and that made my starters unravel, so when I got them redone I didn't wash my hair for like 3-4 months until they began to mat together. Personally I would say to not wash until you've started to lock unless your hair really needs it. if you have oily scalp or your hair is dirty by all means wash it.

@@myrtlebeachpimp I would never go 3 months without washing g KY hair if i could help it. The longest I went was 3wks when u started mine and even then I cleaned my scalp with sea breeze.

Yup, I did that. First time someone started my locs and I continued them on my own. I never saw this in my hair at all. I would rub a product in my hair on my scalp instead of washing my locs "Sea Breeze". I kept my scalped wrapped for an entire year until I was able to make a ponytail. Eventually I cut my locs after 5 years. However, I did notice dry stuff in my locs when I cut through them. I will not do it again if I decide to lock my hair again

The stylist that started my locs did everything right ( in my opinion) so I cringed when she advised me to not wash my hair. Needless to say I’ve been loc’d over a year and retwist my own hair. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Lord!! Don't wash your locs, are words from the devil!!! I started my son's locs based on the knowledge you share with us!!! I wash condition and retwist every 3 weeks, but evaluate his scalp weekly. No heavy products, no issues Amen!! His hair is doing amazing. This is exactly how I will be doing mine!!! Bless you for teaching.

This is exactly why I've needed you to come to VA...or please recommend someone in VA that you know will do a righteous wash and retwist. I do my best washing myself, but I can't see my scalp and bending over the kitchen sink makes it more difficult. I'm in my 1st full year and believe my locs would be better if I had a "true" Loctican helping to maintain my locs. Please send help. Best regards.

I cut my locs 6 months in because of this reason. The person that started my locs told me not to let water touch my head. She said to DRINK lots of water to hydrate the scalp. I followed all of her instructions, and I just felt yucky all the time. There were too many crumbs! No one in my area had much knowledge on caring for locs. Thanks for your knowledge- hopefully someone watches your video before it's too late... like it was for me

I got tired of interviewing stylists with these raggedy practices and did my install myself. Hope I get to see you in NY one day for a retie and correction if needed. I sweat and am going through menopause so anyone pushing no washing was not considered as that would be a disaster. The best thing about locs is freedom from being a product junkie. Thank you for all that you are doing for the cause!

idk who started this myth & why...I have came across many new clients who have been told to not wash their hair because washing will "prevent the hair from locking in the starter loc phase" smh...so they just sitting there looking crazy for 3,4,5,6+ months not washing their hair and wondering why their hair is flaky, dry, build up any & everywhere....and lets not even talk about conditioner because there are some locticians who don't use conditioner at all...i had a client who hasn't washed his hair in an entire year bc his loctician told him to only wash his hair when he gets a retwist, aka only let her wash it....another client would get retwists every 4 weeks but the stylist refused to wash her hair since she was in the beginning stages...so she would just pile product on her dirty hair month after month, & this went on for 8 months. And what made it worse was her stylist's product of choice was bees wax...a catastrophe! THIS IS TOO COMMON AND IT NEEDS TO STOP!

See, it's mess like this that perpetuates the stigma that "dread"locks, and the ppl that have them are dirty. U have no idea how much ignorance is out there. Ppl really think if u have locs, u don't wash your hair, and here come these stylists just having ppl feed the stereotype smh. I am way too self-conscious to walk around like that. I work with ppl and live in a predominately non-minority community. No way I'm representing myself or my race in that manner

Man I was just thinking about this brotha. I did barrels for a 2 weeks on, 1 week off and another 2 weeks. Now I have a loc towards my hair line that's hella thin and weak looking. Someome said I should sow it with another small loc to make it thick.

Omg 😱. I don’t understand why people think 🤔 you’re not supposed to wash your hair after you start locking your hair. That’s just sad. I’ve had several people tell me not to wash my hair whenever I started my loc journey in 2018. Just plain 🤮.
