I loved the part where 13 kept saying "nO gUnS" but then lured a bunch of spiders into a room to starve to death and let another one painfully suffocate. Real solid moral compass.

Racism was adressed in "Family of blood", where noone believes that Martha could be a doctor, because she's a black woman. It gives her a good moment to stand her ground and is generally pretty well written.

Like we always say, "It's not the the fact that she's a woman that's the problem, it's that she's a poorly written character that happens to be a woman." Don't use your gender as your most important feature.

Can we all stop and acknowledge that Chibnall has accomplished one thing that's pretty impressive. Got Davies fans and Moffat fans to agree on something. True, it's the fact that he sucks worse than either, but still!

Basically Dr. Who became the one thing that will kill any show: agressively bland. Bland writing, bland acting, bland music, bland cinematography. I'd rather watch a baseball player swing for the fences and sometimes miss than bunt every at-bat. It's just not thrilling to watch.

Season 10, The Doctor's companion is insulted by a racist this angers the Doctor enough for him to knock the guy out. Season 11, the Doctor's companion gets a slap in the face and the Doctor doesn't even give one of her telling off. This is an example of one of the things I really hate about the Chiball era, there's no way the Doctor would be so chilled out about someone under their care being assaulted, this was a great opportunity for the new Doctor to go dark and be a badass but nope she apparently has less teeth than Nardole..

Imagine criticizing a show then directing it just making it worse.

The only season arc was basically: "oh do you remember that guy in the first episode? well he's in the last episode too."

Basically, Chibbs writes plot-driven stories instead of character-driven ones. And not only do character-driven stories work better generally, it’s especially the case for Doctor Who because The Doctor, the companions, the monster and how they all interact based on the choices and themes in the episode is kind of the whole point of the show. RTD and Moffat understood that in a way I fear Chibbs never will.

Smith was my first Doctor, and I feel in love with him. Then I learned about the hate he got for "replacing Tennant", and I felt so bad for him, since he was overshadowed for a while by how he performed the role. Then I learned how practically everyone who got the role after a previous version got hate at first, then people adapted to them in time. I'm not feeling that for 13, especially after how much they've emphasized how 12 was the final form the Doctor can take. I feel like 13 is professionally produced fan fiction. Edit: Glad you spoke about the Van Gogh episode in this. Undeniably my favorite episode of the entire series. It helped me with my own depression and, though he still succumbs to it in the end, and even if it was fictitious, seeing him react to the impact his art makes in this current time gave me so much hope for my own work.

The only character development Yaz got was she changed her hair every episode.

I love how during Moffat's tenure, everyone hated him, especially towards the end, but now he's gone, everyone's suddenly acting like he always struck gold.

I was surprised by just how much the music thing bothered me. You don’t appreciate some things until they’re gone😩

I can't begin to describe my frustration with various situations where 13 basically just shrugs her shoulders at the villain, especially when similar confrontations created some of the best moments for previous Doctors. I want a 13 'Captain Runaway' speech or just an episode where she comes across as someone I should actually listen to. She's an incredibly passive protagonist.

Chibnall is a unique story writer, in that everything he writes is lacking in story. The Doctor was always going to have more regenerations. The BBC were never going to replace the main character of the show. All Chibnall did with The Timeless Children, was to remove the need for any future stories explaining how he/she is still alive.

What I hate the most about 13, is that there is nothing that ties the season together. Have a look at the crack in time or bad wolf, those made everything for together...

Why the hell were there 3 companion characters if they have no personality at all. It was like watching a bad harem anime >:(

“I can’t even objectify the doctor” that is somehow the best description someone has ever given on the 13th doctor. Shows how little personality she has. Like 10th and 11th have some type of personality and “quirk”.

For the first episode they should've had two competing aliens trying to kill Ryan. Why Ryan? Because he was the first person to touch the Mystery Fig. No stupid timeless bombs that don't do anything, no stupid tentacle blob that doesn't do anything.

Heck they could have aloted more time about The Doctor's gender confusion, as it has been astablashed Time Lords can change gender, the confusion could come from this being the first time for the doctor. Almost like the introduction of 11th and his confusion with taste and almost everything else about himself.

I remember the Monday after Doctor Who episode Rose aired was our bin day, i happened to be going out to the shop as the guys who come along to empty the bins came round as far as my bins. Made a joke about getting eaten by a wheelie bin and they laughed even though they been getting those all day. Russell T Davis was a genius because he was able to get an every day object that you barely even notice is there, and make it suddenly scary.

Joanna Lumley was the Doctor for 90 seconds in a Comic Relief sketch. In that time she gave more personality and character to the Doctor than I saw in the entire last season. I can't tell you what Wittakers Doctor is, what quirks she has, etc. except her being female. I can't tell you about the personality of her companions other than "Old guy" "Clumsy guy" and "girl." I couldn't give you a summary of a single episode from the entire season. It was just bland.

47:15 -- so wait, let me get this straight, -- the plot of this episode literally revolves around how a time traveling racist goes back in time to stop Rosa Parks from getting on that bus, because... Civil Rights movement never would've started if it weren't for Rosa Parks? Tf? As if the impossibly restrictive unbearably racist conditions of the 1950s wouldn't have inevitably caused someone else to say 'f*ck it, I'm not taking this anymore.' Jesus. What a plan there, guy. What a high stakes plot line. What a dumb freaking idea for an episode. Also yeah that's bullshit the Doc just stood there and let a companion take it, like what the hell? Doc would've been all over that dude's ass.

Losing the 11th doctor’s first companions made me cry so much

doctor who used to feel like an escape but now it feels like I’m having education forced down my throat,, don’t get me wrong I agree with all their messages but it just doesn’t have the same wonder and edge it did before

You know what, I didn't even realise one of the biggest reasons I disliked the new series: Daddy Murray is no longer doing the music. The music in Doctor Who has always been one of the most enjoyable parts of the show for me.

It was Chibnalls view that the show wasn't challenging to watch! Well he's successfully made it a challenge to watch now!

Brilliant mate. You've pointed out how a long running show cannot keep it's quality by hiring directors, producers and script writers who've NEVER watched the show. Your critique of this new season and direction of this show is based on your love of Doctor Who. These people running this show have no idea what they are writing about nor do they really care about good writing.

I didn't think the Rosa episode was very realistic. The white racist people were really over the top, like hating black people was all they ever did or thought about. They didn't come across like they just too racist attitudes for granted, they seemed like enraged fantatics who thought about nothing but race. Rosa herself was made to seem almost angelic, she was literally back lit when she first appeared. She was so saintly that she also didn't seem like a real person, any more than the furiously racist towns people did. Also some of the depictions of events were misleading. The bus driver involved wasn't a screaming monster, he was more annoyed in a "look, I've got a job to do, why are you making a fuss?" kind of way according to actual accounts. It was all made very cartoonish. And the bad guy really was incredibly boring. I actually joked as I was watching "is the bad guy going to be an evil space racist?" And then it turned out he was.

The show has lost its whimsical fun creepiness. Love Jodi, but am beyond sad the writing is so horrid for her. The writers ruined this all time favorite show. Come back Neil Gaiman!

A female doctor who explores the idea of the 'mother hen' or 'mama bear' kind of mother would've been cool. Juggling the urge to do what's right with the urge to protect her companions at all costs, like mothers do all the time. Oh well

i love how the goofy, slow robots that resemble slightly mobile trash bins are probably the most dangerous, feared antagonists on the show. i guess that's what they call Suspension Of Disbelief, or SOD for short.

perfect analysis, actually: in order to address the division in the audience, they played it as safe as humanly possible in an attempt to not piss off either side. yet ultimately what that resulted in was not pleasing either side either - EVERYONE just saw it as almost violently mediocre.

That comparison of Van Gogh and Rosa Parks episodes was spot on. Van Gogh still makes me cry everytime Bill Nighy praises him. I couldn't care less about Rosa when 13th spoke.

Blackman is a highly overrated YA author, and I was very surprised that they even considered her for an episode, when previously we’d had famed science-fiction and fantasy author Neil Gaiman on to write some really awesome episodes.

The way the music sounds makes me think that Chris Chibnall is using the free version of some random music program and using barely anything from it.

What worries me about this new direction in Doctor Who is that, when the ratings inevitably slump, BBC might chalk it up to the Doctor being a woman, and not the fact that the writing is shit. A female Doctor of the same quality as Missy from Moffat's run (the standout performance of the later Moffat seasons, imo) would've been a treat.

My father had only watched the older Doctor Who once or twice growing up as it wasn't his type of show. I urged him to watch the Van Goph episode and he teared up at the final scene. The idea that Vincet was suffering from depression yet was able to see the impact he had in the world of art is beautiful and something to speak of even though he inevitably lost his fight. The message is strong but clear and to this day remains my favorite episode.

Chibbs got exactly what he deserved. A chance to make his version of the show and for it to be a trainwreck 3 series straight, in front of the whole world

one of the worst things that Chipnal/BBC did to Doctor Who was remove the christmas episodes, the Christmas ones are always the best. to the point that when I think of Matt Smith, Christmas comes to mind

I'm so glad you mentioned the change of composers. The music in the doctor who was one of the main reasons why I loved the show but since they changed composers every scene in the new season just feels really empty.

I think the assault on Ryan would've been a great time for the Doctor to reflect on how she has to handle conflict as a woman. The old doctors could've physically stood up for Ryan and maybe intimidated the guy, but as a small woman, she can't. Missed opportunities for character reflection

Vincent and The Doctor - An episode that makes me fucking cry every time I see it because it's so powerful. One of the best Who episodes ever penned. Rosa - I dunno, it's racism I guess.

From what I recall, 9, 10, 11, and 12 had reasons for being. Recovering from the war, wanting to reject a past self and just adventure, cutting loose on his enemies, and eventually accepting what was and looking older again...or something like that. Writing aside, maybe this version just doesn't have a reason to be. Maybe that's why it feels "meh."

I cannot say how relieved I am that many, many other people feel the same way I did. I loved the idea that 13 was going to be female, I was excited to see what new direction that Doctor Who would go, and the all the possibilities that could happen. But as fans and this video analysis has seen, aside from some comments here and there, the female Doctor feels miniscule. Like it does not matter and the Doctor's role is a side character and very muted than before. Yes people have complained that 11 and 12 revolved around the companions too much, but the overall story and the brilliant yet awkward personality of the Doctor was still there. You still felt chills at some of the amazing plans or speeches or actions of the Doctor, while also seeing how just as brilliant the companions could be. But 13 just makes the Doctor, for the lack of a better word, ordinary and plain. The Doctor's solutions are spastic and in the moment (I know that is a joke in the series, but the way 13 solves things is quick, boring, and just plain. Nothing really stands out. Bad writing mostly.) I never thought "Damn, 13 is amazing, this IS the Doctor." Watching all of season 11 and some of season 12, all I could think was, "Is this really Doctor Who?" The Rosa Parks episode was good, but was still pretty disappointing. When Ryan got slapped, I thought, "Okay here, here the Doctor is going to speak. To give a speech and stand up for Ryan, talk about how the man's bigotry will lead to nothing but suffering, that his opinions and actions will lead to nothing, and become nothing in the big universe. That the Doctor, who saw so much, knows so much, has seen the future, knows the man's insignificant, mistaken view of race and skin color, will be the disappointment of the human race that meets different species and integrates into the universe." But no, all we got was the Doctor, stepping back in the background, looking scared and saying "We do not want any trouble". Leaves the restaurant that refuses to serve Yaz and Ryan, and does almost nothing about the future racist trying to mess with time. She says guns are bad, but uses grenades, bombs, and is so, not Doctor-Like, I don't know what to say. The Doctor shows mercy, does not like weapons, that is classic. But they don't stand back and let evil be evil. They try to forgive and do everything they can before retaliating, but the Doctor does retaliate. The first episode alien, the Doctor made no attempt to investigate the hostile alien species any more? I expected her to go to their planet, stand firm, and say "No more". But all the says is, "You had no right" to the crane driver and completely glosses over the alien. We later find out that the alien species is cleansing other races and burning planets. At the same time, letting people die and showing no remorse or sparing a second thought. The Kerblam antagonist, the Doctor did not try that hard to save the kid who was clearly in distress. Yes he was doing something wrong, but he was a kid who was clearly lost amd mentally and emotionally unstable. 13 just does not feel like the Doctor, not because she is female, but because the writing is atrocious. The companions are not bad, not good. Just meh. Maybe because there are three, maybe the writing has no time to really flush them out, I don't know, but they do feel flat. Ryan's condition is not really brought up as much of a problem, just throw away comments or scenes here and there. Graham's grief is flushed out a little more, even his attempts to bond with and look after Ryan is touched upon a little, but still very lacking. Yaz feels the most wasted, I cannot even think of something noteworthy about her character that is explored, even with a whole episode dedicated to her character (which was an interesting human epsiode). 10, 11, and 12's story felt more significant. Especially 11, where from beginning to end with some side story episodic episodes thrown in, there was a building up to some overarching story. You saw things that connected, that were significant and had meaning. You got excited when you saw something that had significance, or gasped when you thought back something in another episode. With 13th's adventures, aside from clumsy feeling scenes and attempts at connecting the series together, there was no such feeling. Each episode felt random, sometimes they were just thrown in the middle of a story without a proper explanation on why they were sent there. 13 often said "Oh the TARDIS is being finicky" but why? 13's interactions with the TARDIS are so flat and just "person and car that just takes me places", I wonder if the TARDIS is anything more to 13 than a ride anymore.
