Doctor Who is a BBC science fiction time travelling show made for the entire family. It was first broadcast in 1963 and since then, it hasn’t changed much. Or has it? In 2018 Chris Chibnall took over as Doctor Who showrunner and proceeded to make the biggest changes to date. Making Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor a woman. Is this SJW’s gone too far? Or was this just a necessary change to keep the show modern and popular?
Well in this 85 minute season 11 review of Doctor Who, I go through all of that plus more bits where I look at the concept of ‘showrunning’. I say the words ‘Doctor Who’ 453 times in this video, I finally get to give Steven Moffat and Russell T Davies the respect they deserve and I open up more about my old job as an Amazon fulfilment worker.

Just like Rian Johnson was for Star Wars. Say what you want about JJ and Force Awakens, you can tell that he genuinely love Star Wars, all its flaws and beauty. For Johnson it felt like he likes it as well maybe even love it but wants to change it completely for the sake of being different and make it "better" while ultimately leading nowhere. I feel Chibnall is the same way. Both these people either just want to be different for the sake of being different or they just don't get the franchise they have.

@@nostalgiatrip1 In some ways, there's still even a bit of the 'good' in there as well, as arguably Rogue One's the best of the new lot, with some good stuff of it's own that doesn't feel like rehashes or 'subvert expectations'.
@_l-_-l_
@_l-_-l_ 5 лет назад
@@gratuitouslurking8610 2/3 of the original trilogy stories were about blowing up the death star, anyone who complains about rehashing story in startwars has as much idea of what makes starwars good as Rian Johnson does. It's a space opera, just like in soap operas the overall story doesn't matter it's only there so we can see characters interact, every single Iconic moment from starwars is about characters and JJ understood that's why at the end of the force awakens all you have is questions about characters, Who's snoke? who are rays parents? where is luke? ect, while when you have an generic action story like in the last jedi the only real question is "Why are they making another movie after this?" because the rebels have lost, there is no way to recover without some stupid bullshit like finding a lost rebel fleet somewhere and there are no questions about the characters. Rogue one was a good action movie, but it's not a space opera like episodes 1 to 7, Though i would be happy for them just to abandon the main series and just make decent spin offs like this and not trying to bait people in like they did Solo: The story no one asked for.
@_l-_-l_
@_l-_-l_ 5 лет назад
@jason lewis Well yea, it's a trilogy, he was writing it as one, the only mainline stand alone Star wars movie is Star Wars (A New Hope) because it was never intended series. Basically everything you mentioned doesn't matter, not trying to be rude but, watch the first 3 movies and they tell you fuck all about the political state of the galaxy or how they manage to build 2 death stars so quickly. Sure the prequels gave us a shit ton of lore but, people hated them...well until TFA and TLJ came out, now I only see people talking about how good they are, disney basically sat down JJ and told him to stay the fuck away from anything that even remotely looked like the prequels, so that's why there isn't even a hint of lore in the movies. JJ did fine setting everything up, it was rian that fucked it, was TFA a master piece, no but nether was A new hope which is weakest of the original trilogy and I'm not even going to mention how god awful the phantom menace was compared to clone wars and return of the sith.

@@andybyrd4107 Moffat's troubles started with 12 - or more accurately 12 and Clara. Clara shined with 11, because they were both equally as...manic. But 12 was far calmer and poised (guitar solos on tanks not withstanding) so the two characters just grated against each other. I liked Bill, but before too long, Moffat started trying to cram 2 episodes worth of plot into a one episode slot. But overall, I agree - it was mostly Davies fans that were trashing him for the most part. @sirpsychosussy
@sirpsychosussy Год назад
@@demitraferles7970 Not really. Firstly, I'm not sure how Doctor Who wasn't politically correct before. Like, you had that Silurian woman and the other woman having an on-screen snog in series 8, and Bill being black and lesbian, and some of the pro-worker (I can't think of a better word) lines that the Doctor had in series 10, like the bit in Thin Ice when he shuts down that posh racist guy. Secondly, I think it's just that the writing was not good. None of the characters felt like real people, or different people for that matter, motivations for doing anything important rarely made sense, the villains were uninteresting, let alone unthreatening and the dialogue was just truly _awful._ Even if the Doctor had been a guy as normal, she would have still been grossly unDoctorlike. She had giant spiders starve to death, murdered that Amazon worker guy in cold blood, got the Master sent to a concentration camp, and was utterly pathetic in hiding behind her so-called "social awkwardness" as an excuse not to comfort Graham about his cancer worries. The acting was similarly dull, although I suppose we can blame that on the absence of real characters to act out, and the music wouldn't even fit a department store lift. I can tell you, as someone who watched series 11 and 12, that it doesn't have anything to do with politics, especially not when the only things it really gets right are "racism is bad" and "climate change is bad". The show just happened to be shite.
@acolyte1363

Season 10, The Doctor's companion is insulted by a racist this angers the Doctor enough for him to knock the guy out. Season 11, the Doctor's companion gets a slap in the face and the Doctor doesn't even give one of her telling off. This is an example of one of the things I really hate about the Chiball era, there's no way the Doctor would be so chilled out about someone under their care being assaulted, this was a great opportunity for the new Doctor to go dark and be a badass but nope she apparently has less teeth than Nardole..

Smith was my first Doctor, and I feel in love with him. Then I learned about the hate he got for "replacing Tennant", and I felt so bad for him, since he was overshadowed for a while by how he performed the role. Then I learned how practically everyone who got the role after a previous version got hate at first, then people adapted to them in time. I'm not feeling that for 13, especially after how much they've emphasized how 12 was the final form the Doctor can take. I feel like 13 is professionally produced fan fiction. Edit: Glad you spoke about the Van Gogh episode in this. Undeniably my favorite episode of the entire series. It helped me with my own depression and, though he still succumbs to it in the end, and even if it was fictitious, seeing him react to the impact his art makes in this current time gave me so much hope for my own work.

If previous ret cons while still kinda iffy at least attempted to actually somehow justify themselves, Chibnail's retcons were like "eh, whatever, I want it that way". I mean man himself said that show didn't talk about important issues. So basically everything that was written during 13th era was to "fix" this or that.

Moffat certainly didn't always strike gold (in fact I'd say he only did once on his own - series 5. Yes he wrote extremely good episodes for RTD, but his biggest failure is recognising which of his big ideas are stupid, and when he wasn't the showrunner, he had someone else to reign him in), but at least he didn't constantly drill straight through the bedrock.

I wish more people would look at this show with more love and understanding. It's debatably the greatest TV show in the world and the longest running so just imagine the pressure on Chris Chibnall and the new writers to deliver. Oh that’s actually interesting. The aliens could come from a planet where these hunting competitions are used to give status to different people. It would give the doctor this odd three way situation of 2 characters stopping each other from killing someone because they want to kill them themselves, while the doctor is stuck in the middle just trying to stop them both and save the person. What a fun way to introduce a new companion too, by having them at the center of a ridiculous sci fi alien society thing they can really reinforce their role as the grounded half of The Who dynamic who is meant to be a vessel for the viewer. It lets the doctor have a strong conflict and allows the doctor to have time with a new companion who can also have chances to show off why they would be a good and unique new companion. As far as concepts for an episode, and more specifically a new series introductory episode, of doctor who I actually really love this idea.

Well nonetheless the story in that episode was simple and yet somehow nonsensically dumb and it did not do a good job of using what simplicity was there to help focus on character and world building.

47:15 -- so wait, let me get this straight, -- the plot of this episode literally revolves around how a time traveling racist goes back in time to stop Rosa Parks from getting on that bus, because... Civil Rights movement never would've started if it weren't for Rosa Parks? Tf? As if the impossibly restrictive unbearably racist conditions of the 1950s wouldn't have inevitably caused someone else to say 'f*ck it, I'm not taking this anymore.' Jesus. What a plan there, guy. What a high stakes plot line. What a dumb freaking idea for an episode. Also yeah that's bullshit the Doc just stood there and let a companion take it, like what the hell? @ampersandcastle1091

Exactly, it weirdly takes credit away from the civil rights movement. By implying that the world would just be racist forever if Rosa didn’t get on the bus at that SPECIFIC time under those SPECIFIC conditions, it makes it seem like a coincidence or a spur-of-the-moment decision, not a plan that was crafted by the leaders of the movement. If the bus had empty seats so Rosa wouldn’t have had to move at that moment, she just would’ve done it on another day

It's so weird! If he actually thought this through, he would go way back in time and stopped the African slave trade. 🤦Only way to stop the civil rights movement from ever succeeding is by never letting it start: stop African Americans from ever being brought from Africa. Obviously it would be more complicated, because racism would still exist. But if he made sure slavery never happened, and that the only Africans who make it to America are wealthy immigrants by choice, then that would solve a lot. Just, so so so dumb. Also a tragic lost opportunity to actually explain the truth behind Rosa Parks (she wasn't the first, it was a different woman. Rosa Parks was specifically chosen to be the first public & published example - to the media). But no, the characters all act like Rosa Parks was literally the first and a huge deal, when really it was about everyone else involved and the entire movement. 🤦

I didn't think the Rosa episode was very realistic. The white racist people were really over the top, like hating black people was all they ever did or thought about. They didn't come across like they just too racist attitudes for granted, they seemed like enraged fantatics who thought about nothing but race. Rosa herself was made to seem almost angelic, she was literally back lit when she first appeared. She was so saintly that she also didn't seem like a real person, any more than the furiously racist towns people did. Also some of the depictions of events were misleading. The bus driver involved wasn't a screaming monster, he was more annoyed in a "look, I've got a job to do, why are you making a fuss?" kind of way according to actual accounts. It was all made very cartoonish. And the bad guy really was incredibly boring. I actually joked as I was watching "is the bad guy going to be an evil space racist?" And then it turned out he was.

You've got the ever noxious, charisma-free Whittaker frequently gassing on about muh feminism via interviews instead of promoting the show. You've got practically every episode of the season dedicated to ramming various facets of _far_ Left ideology down the audience's throat at the expense of the ingenious escapist entertainment they so desperately want. You've got elements of the leftwing media blatantly shilling for the show SOLELY because of _ideological_ expediency..... What worries me about this new direction in Doctor Who is that, when the ratings inevitably slump, BBC might chalk it up to the Doctor being a woman, and not the fact that the writing is shit. I think what makes it unsatisfying is how the Left seems to be fixated on the theory that gender identity is 100% socialization. Recovering from the war, wanting to reject a past self and just adventure, cutting loose on his enemies, and eventually accepting what was and looking older again...or something like that. I cannot say how relieved I am that many, many other people feel the same way I did. I loved the idea that 13 was going to be female, I was excited to see what new direction that Doctor Who would go, and the all the possibilities that could happen. But as fans and this video analysis has seen, aside from some comments here and there, the female Doctor feels miniscule. Like it does not matter and the Doctor's role is a side character and very muted than before. Yes people have complained that 11 and 12 revolved around the companions too much, but the overall story and the brilliant yet awkward personality of the Doctor was still there. You still felt chills at some of the amazing plans or speeches or actions of the Doctor, while also seeing how just as brilliant the companions could be. But 13 just makes the Doctor, for the lack of a better word, ordinary and plain. The Doctor's solutions are spastic and in the moment (I know that is a joke in the series, but the way 13 solves things is quick, boring, and just plain. Nothing really stands out. Bad writing mostly.) I never thought "Damn, 13 is amazing, this IS the Doctor." Watching all of season 11 and some of season 12, all I could think was, "Is this really Doctor Who?" The Rosa Parks episode was good, but was still pretty disappointing. When Ryan got slapped, I thought, "Okay here, here the Doctor is going to speak. To give a speech and stand up for Ryan, talk about how the man's bigotry will lead to nothing but suffering, that his opinions and actions will lead to nothing, and become nothing in the big universe. That the Doctor, who saw so much, knows so much, has seen the future, knows the man's insignificant, mistaken view of race and skin color, will be the disappointment of the human race that meets different species and integrates into the universe." But no, all we got was the Doctor, stepping back in the background, looking scared and saying "We do not want any trouble". Leaves the restaurant that refuses to serve Yaz and Ryan, and does almost nothing about the future racist trying to mess with time. She says guns are bad, but uses grenades, bombs, and is so, not Doctor-Like, I don't know what to say. The Doctor shows mercy, does not like weapons, that is classic. But they don't stand back and let evil be evil. They try to forgive and do everything they can before retaliating, but the Doctor does retaliate. The first episode alien, the Doctor made no attempt to investigate the hostile alien species any more? I expected her to go to their planet, stand firm, and say "No more". But all the says is, "You had no right" to the crane driver and completely glosses over the alien. We later find out that the alien species is cleansing other races and burning planets. At the same time, letting people die and showing no remorse or sparing a second thought. The Kerblam antagonist, the Doctor did not try that hard to save the kid who was clearly in distress. Yes he was doing something wrong, but he was a kid who was clearly lost amd mentally and emotionally unstable. 13 just does not feel like the Doctor, not because she is female, but because the writing is atrocious. The companions are not bad, not good. Just meh. Maybe because there are three, maybe the writing has no time to really flush them out, I don't know, but they do feel flat. Ryan's condition is not really brought up as much of a problem, just throw away comments or scenes here and there. Graham's grief is flushed out a little more, even his attempts to bond with and look after Ryan is touched upon a little, but still very lacking. Yaz feels the most wasted, I cannot even think of something noteworthy about her character that is explored, even with a whole episode dedicated to her character (which was an interesting human epsiode). 10, 11, and 12's story felt more significant. Especially 11, where from beginning to end with some side story episodic episodes thrown in, there was a building up to some overarching story. You saw things that connected, that were significant and had meaning. You got excited when you saw something that had significance, or gasped when you thought back something in another episode. With 13th's adventures, aside from clumsy feeling scenes and attempts at connecting the series together, there was no such feeling. Each episode felt random, sometimes they were just thrown in the middle of a story without a proper explanation on why they were sent there. 13 often said "Oh the TARDIS is being finicky" but why? 13's interactions with the TARDIS are so flat and just "person and car that just takes me places", I wonder if the TARDIS is anything more to 13 than a ride anymore.
