Just because I'm laughing it doesn't mean I like it. I like laughing together, not for others. I've raised my younger brother, I've experienced love and heartbreak, I've been assaulted by older men and I've been loved too. And I am not a child I am a legal adult 😅 You are allowed to have power over your own emotions. I've lived my whole life living for other people, things I won't go into detail with but it sucks being told to smile when I don't want to. One incidence I can recall is being 11 or 12 years old, and losing my baby brother who wandered off in a public place. I was running around in tears looking for the boy, frantic. Mind you, I have very visible and obvious facial expressions. And a man stopped me and told me to "cover myself up" I am living for other people and forgetting who i am because i cannot relax. I can only survive. So please, let me be happy when i want to. Let me at least be allowed to feel what i feel. I am allowed to be sad, be mad, and be happy. You seem like a wonderful person who does genuinely care about children and the next generation, but sometimes things are not how they seem times have changed, but humans are still complicated. Please try to understand that just because someone doesn't smile because you tell them to does not mean they are tightened up. We have hobbies, I am an artist and a uni student and I write stories, and i have friends, and I love playing video games. You are right, our generation is a lot more uptight, and we need to learn to relax, but we need to relax for ourselves. If she doesn't want to smile she doesn't have to smile. But if she feels weak when she smiles then there is an issue. Smiling is an act of joy, pleasure and it shouldn't make anyone feel weak

The point is. It's pointless to fake smile just to please other people, if you don't feel like smiling. I say make me smile, don't force me. People don't like to see other people sad or just serious because it ruins their moment, so they are selfish enough to tell you to smile, but not loving enough to care what you are going through.

You don't need to smile every time anyways. just be yourself and only smile when you feel like it, not because everyone expects you to do so. A serious expression is a great way to scare off useless people from wasting your time. Trust me, in life you're more likely to be taken for granted and stepped on when you smile a lot, unlike when you have a facial expression that shows that you don't put up with people's BS.
I can relate a lot.. I don't like it when I'm not enjoying something or just in a bad mood my mom would tell me to smile for the camera.. Then, when I "make a face" She gets irritated and tells me to smile- which of course makes me more annoyed but I try to hide it. Then, after I fake smiled I turn into my serious/resting face immediately.. I don't like it when my smiles aren't genuine.. Especially to my parents..
Smiling can be masking if you are angry or hurt inside. And it drains your energy. I smile when I feel like it and I also always hated hearing that. Usually by men who felt entitled without even being kind and respectful I have gotten this phrase alot. And like Billie it felt better to be a rebel and true to oneself. treat people with kindness and they will smile at you. Stop telling people what to do and how to feel. let everyone be themselves.
I hate being told to smile. I want to smile because it's genuine. I don't want to smile for you, I don't want a fake smile. I don't want to smile because a man tells me to, I don't want to smile because someone is uncomfortable with my true emotions and the way I physically express emotions. I have a resting you-know-what-face and that's okay. It's literally just my face. Telling someone to smile when they don't feel it is like saying "I know you're unhappy, but can you at least not be ugly?"

I understand her very well. I hate people who dictate what emotions we should express. Smiling is a sign of a certain emotion, shouldn't be forced. It's very annoying to be forced to smile, doesn't mean she actually hates smiling.
For me when people say "you look pretty when you smile" just means that I feel happy when you're happy. Since smiling is a universal way of expressing that you're happy and have a positive mood today and I don't think they would find the feeling the same if they sense that you're smile is fake. People just like seeing people genuinely smile 😊 I also like that she smiles in fan pics. I just think she's not really into forcing a smile and maybe so that she's just following her brand
I get what you’re saying, but a neutral face or a frown doesn’t mean someone isn’t happy or in a generally good mood. It’s just frustrating to some people when they’re told they MUST be mad because their face says so, even if maybe they were just thinking hard and that’s why they had a furrowed brow. Faces mean a plethora of things, even smiles don’t necessarily mean you’re happy, it could be an uncomfortable smile or a spiteful smile. Lots of people either don’t care that a smile is fake or I have RBF, so I could be completely content and people often walk up to me and ask “What’s wrong?” I’ll tell them nothing and they’ll say “Oh, you look angry.” No ma’am/sir, just chilling, minding my own business, stuck in my thoughts. Thanks tho for letting me know that my face isn’t to your liking. It can get infuriating when it’s done enough by the same people over and over and then again by strangers too.

Don't take anything personally when someone comments about you. It can be frustrating to know that maybe your normal facial expression can result in people seeing you as a grumpy person kind of making them avoid you. But don't assume that they're asking something from you, just think of it as them just stating their opinion. You don't need to please anybody.

As an Italian this sounds a bit odd. 🇮🇹🤔 We do adore smiling, even just for a family selfie, on the street, even if we don't know eachother, to a kid at the park, to a handsome man, for a wedding photo shoot....A day without a smile, it's a wasted day. 😊❤. Yeah, don't just randomly tell people to smile when it's not helping anyone, lol. That might just be their neutral expression, and it's so weird to want to dictate other people's facial expressions. They can be perfectly content and not smile, because they're thinking about something else. If they're having a bad day, you can give them space, or you can ask them, "how are you - and I mean it, how are you doing?" If they're feeling down, you could acknowledge their feelings, and know that it's okay to feel that, and then try to engage them in something fun or make them laugh if they want - but don't just tell them they have to smile, because then they're just masking, and they will feel like they can't be real around you. They'll feel like they can't confide in you, because rather than actually caring, you just want to force them to smile. People don't need that, lol it takes conscious thought to smile, and people can have a neutral expression if they want and think about something else they need to do. You can be in a good mood and not smile. It's so weird to constantly be like, "smile!" to everyone as if it's something they have to do, rather than something that should be genuine. When I'm alone and happy I'm not constantly smiling non-stop. That would just be strange. 😂
Lol men have told me I look mean, I look like I’m gonna bite, I look bored, I look tired, I look like I hate it here, I should smile more, etc. all while just simply waiting/resting. A few times I’ve been told by women to smile for them, I look mean, etc. always more weird coming from women cuz I’m one too so to tell another women something we can’t stand men telling us always rubbed me the wrong way. I would agree, if the smile is genuine, but there's so much emphasis on superficiality these days, that it can be hard to smile honestly, or recognize one, so I think she's really grounded actually.
