Let’s explore the relic guitar phenomenon! There are lots of companies doing it but let’s focus on Fender Custom Shop since they were the first to mass produce them! What do they make so many? Why are the heavier relics the most popular? Why should YOU want one? I’ll tell you what my thoughts are and I hope you’ll share yours in the comments! Relics rule!

I agree 💯 with your 3 points. At first I didn’t get it. Once you own one it feels like an old pair of favorite jeans. Im a bit OCD when it comes to taking care of my guitars. I noticed that I can focus more on my playing and not worry about scratching it or something happening to it at practice or at gigs. It’s just so “comfortable”.🔥🤘👍

Great vid, Shad. I do really like to look of a tastefully-done relic job. But the feel, wow - that’s what really makes all the difference. As you pointed out in the vid, a sanded and smooth neck, rolled fingerboard edges, etc. make me want to PLAY the guitar more. While looks are what initially draw you in, it’s the feel that keeps you coming back. Keep up the great vids!

Yes Mike! That’s the main thing. The feel of a relic guitar just makes it more comfortable and enjoyable to play! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I bought a 3rd hand custom shop relic strat. I thought the whole relic scene was lame, but I got a custom shop strat for a fraction of the price, so I scooped it up. It was an online purchase, so it was a gamble. As soon as I got it in hand, I understood the appeal. This thing felt like I'd been playing it since 1956.

I was sceptical for a while, but it made more and more sense to get a relic guitar. I bought a gitar buildt by a local luthier, based on a 52 tele and Im loving it. I have brigth and shining Ibanez RG 550 in neon purple and a shining new Ibanez AZ and I love those. They will stay pretty for as long as i live. But I also love the reliced tele: the looks, but most importantantly the feel. It feels familiar and friendly. While new and shining instruments to me can feel a little intimidating: Better not ding or sratch it, better behave careful, better play something that stands up to its marvoulous and shining apperance. The relic gives a more relaxe vibe, that installs confidence.

Thanks for your comments, Anders! I agree that they do offer a more relaxed vibe and take the worry out of dents and dings!

I heard Nash do the best Fender style relic guitars. A lot of pro players have said so and that they’re better that Fender Custom shop

Hi Six string😅 I know you love the relic type feel it feels nice to play especially with a smooth worn neck. I was born in 56 when the Telecaster were long in production and a lot of the guitars in that era were mass produced by cheap labour and made on duplicate type router jigs. They were not the best timber and we're cheaply made and probably cost around 100. Bucks to make . Now you can get a precision made instrument say Squire. made on a robot cnc machine for about 200. Bucks. As a guitar modifier myself. I would ad vise you to buy one of these and remove the Finish of the back of the neck with some fine steel wool and also with some 240 and 320 grit rolled around you middle finger rub the edges of the fret board in order to round it off. Try for your self to relic it put some scuffs on it , maybe even change the pickup s to alnico 5 or 2 see what you can do . There's a saying in the building industry if you want a job done then do it yourself. Good luck. Best 👍 regards. John.

I hear what you’re saying, but for me, there is a huge difference in the way the guitars feel between an entry-level guitar and a custom shop level instrument. From Wood selection to the electronics and hardware used… to me. There is no comparison. And as I mentioned, in my video, you are not going to be able to relic a polyurethane finish. I mean I guess you could sand the finish off, but you’re not going to get any authentic looking wear. It has to be a lacquer finish. I will agree with you, though that Squier and other import guitars, have come a long way, and they are making a fine guitar. You definitely don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a decent playing guitar and as you mentioned with some upgrades you can have something very nice.

@@6stringbelief All I can say to you is that you should go to a guitar building course and build your own and persolise it it's not that difficult with solid body instruments. I am a professional woodworker and technician. There's a saying. What. One fool can do another fool can do. For 30 Grand less. Anyway 😂. Have fun in your Sonic Quest. Best regards 😸 . John

@@johnwebb2562 Or just buy an American Vintage and play the thing 😂 Only an opinion. I don’t get the ersatz trend. Mock Georgian houses, stonewashed jeans, relic guitars.. not for me.
@6stringbelief
@6stringbelief 4 месяца назад
@@colliedogjoyconsidering the amount of time you’d have to play an American Vintage to get it to look relic’d, most people would never even get a light relic on it. That’s the draw. People want a guitar that looks well played without having to wait 50 years for it to do it naturally.

Absolutely none of them look authentic to me. Actual old guitars, yes. Relic fakery, no. But then I had one guitar for decades and actually learned to play it, unlike most of the so called “guitarists” these days who can’t play outside a minor pentatonic but have 50 guitars. Glad to be a fossil with skills! For me a guitar is a tool to make music, not a fashion accessory. I don’t generally express my opinion (cause I don’t care about what others think) but since you asked….less relics, more lessons.
@6stringbelief

@mooseymoose

No. @@6stringbelief

@mooseymoose 4 месяца назад
To be clear, MOST everyone doesn’t play well. It requires too much work and dedication and that is why they buy gear.
@6stringbelief
@6stringbelief 4 месяца назад
@@mooseymoose hmmm…. That’s a bold statement. Oddly I fell like younger players actually play pretty well for the most part. They seem to pick up skills, especially more technical aspects, a bit easier. But that’s just me. I gig regularly and see a lot of local bands in the process. Most of them are pretty good. Anyway, I agree that learning to play is more valuable than gear assuming you want to play with other musicians. Some guys just like to have great gear to enjoy playing some very simple things. Nothing wrong with that. There are plenty of things in this world to rob you of joy so if you can find something that brings you a little happiness and satisfaction I say more power to you. So are you still out there putting your skills to use? Do you have a band? Do any live playing?
@mooseymoose
@mooseymoose 4 месяца назад
I don’t much anymore, age did a number on my hands. I really don’t care if people can or can’t play, but I do get sorta annoyed by people with no skills and a warehouse full of gear , probably just a RU-vid phenomena. I am admittedly out of touch.@@6stringbelief
