In this episode of 10th Scale Garage, we take a look at the brand that everyone loves to hate, Traxxas. We explore the history of firsts, from the bandit and the Nitro Hawk, all the way up to the current controversy of the Sledge and Arrma Kraton. Are they really hobby grade? Are they only meant for beginners? What's with all the upgrade parts? Are they worth your money? We even tale a look at their boats like the Spartan and M41 widebody. Heck, we even touch on their shortly lived Drone, the Aton. Am I wrong about Traxxas? Do they deserve their reputation? Let me know!

I say: Buy whatever brand makes YOU the happiest. I own several of each brand: Arrma, Traxxas, Redcat, Tamiya, & Kyosho to name a few, and I even own some ZD Racing RCs; ALL of them put miles of smiles on my face for different reasons and I love, break, and repair all my cars. They ALL make great cars, and they ALL make some junk vehicles. Go with whatever YOU can afford and makes YOU happy, but don't listen to the haters. All of that said.... When you're the big boy at the top, everyone tries to knock you down to be the new king.

No, not so much in my book, trax ass is just a garbage company. They flood the market with crap, (garbage electronics, brittle plastics, gimick over substance) They are as proprietory as they can be, they are sue happy. (They own the word MAXX? I think not.) There cars are good enough to move for a battery, but I've never seen one win anything but drag racing one time. Garbage company selling mediocre junk. That's why I won't even think about a trax ass.

I am a fan of Traxxas, but I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that Traxxas servos are sh*t. The stock 2056 and 2075 that comes in most of their models is a ticking time bomb, and even their actually good servos are far too expensive for what you get. Their 600 oz-in brushless servo is $160 when you could get a Perfect Pass Monster Servo with $900 oz-in of torque for $40 cheaper

My problem with Traxxas is the whole thing about the lawsuits against other brands like HPI and Arrma. They were just trying to bankrupt their competitors rather than just making better products and becoming the top brand in a fair way. They are just big bullies in the industry and I won't buy their products for that reason. Having said that I do still have a Slash that I bought before I knew what they were like but it's had so many mods that it's only about 30% Traxxas now anyway!

@@getmoney12358 Well what Traxxas did was to put patents on designs like inboard shocks that had been around for years before Traxxas did it but not patented by anyone. Traxxas then sued other companies for using this design even though they themselves had not invented it. They did this for a load of RC car features that had been around for years but nobody had thought to patent. Started in my late 40's in the hobby and was directed to a 2wd Slash and never regretted it. Pretty rugged and fairly customizable and upgradable easily. I have a TA RC10B4.2 and have put some Traxxas parts on it because I like them better than the TA parts. IDK I like being able to get parts easily and are available. 33 years in the hobby. Wrote for a major publication, hosted multiple events, ran a hobby shop owned nearly every single brand out there. I've seen and watched the evolution of traxxas since the fiero and trx10 bullet. I've raced competitive with the blue Eagle ls2, the trx 1, and srt. I've raced a slash, I've beat the daylights out of nearly every single model. Availability of parts is a huge attraction, as is the 30 model memory with the tqi. There's good and bad in everything, in every hobby. Traxxas outweighs the bad with good by a huge margin. Huge.

It’s not really hard to get parts for anything made today with the internet. I live in Portland Oregon we have Tammie’s hobbies a huge hobby shop. I wouldn’t go there for parts. It’s all on the web with the best prices, free shipping delivered to your doorstep in 4-5 days. “Parts availability” doesn’t go that far when you can get anything on the web. Traxxas is for kids since they left racing in 94-95 when they couldn’t beat associated and losi. Traxxas are plastic hobby grade toys. Nothing bad about that. They’re just not a racing brand so racing guys will speak poorly of them. Traxxas has their place and that’s a great place, rtr easy entry and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I'd say a big reason people dislike Traxxas is them suing other RC companies like HPI and arrma (particularly when it's over patents that shouldn't have been granted to traxxas in the first place). It became obvious that traxxas didn't want to compete but instead use their size to muscle the competition out of the room. If you've been in the hobby for a while you can see the results of their actions by the lack of brand diversity you see at your local hobby shop, and compare it to how it was around 10 years ago. And in some cases it's directly impacted people who own cars made by the companies who got sued. I mean, I'm not going to say that the reason I can't easily get parts for my HPI car is all traxxas fault (HPI had their own issues before then), but they sure didn't help.

I've had a few Arrma vehicles (3s Granite, 3s Typhon, 3s Vorteks and TLR Tuned Typhon) and most of that experience hasn't been great. What I appreciate the most about Traxxas is something you already mentioned and it's the parts support. I’ve been wanting a slash for the longest time, I finally got one. Yeah there’s the senton and other trucks but the slash was the first I saw. And I love it. I’m very happy I got it, and I see there’s a lot of aftermarket parts so that’s a big part of why I wanted it. I do agree about the batteries, I haven’t upgraded the battery yet because I know when I go brushless im gonna use a different connector. When I was a kid, I watched traxxas videos and dreamed about an rc car. As soon as I turned 10, my parents bought me an hpi bullet flux. I think I’ve never been so happy, it was beautiful, and fast. Sadly, it was not as durable as what I thought. I think that during the 10 years I’ve owned it, it went through 10 diffs, and the same amount of a arms… As a teen, I barely had no money to fix these things, and parts were so hard to find and expensive. 2 years ago, for my 18th birthday, I bought myself a slash ultimate while visiting Texas with my parents. The difference with the hpi Just shocked me, being able to find cheap parts anywhere, being stronger than the hpi with metal parts and not having disposable diffs… for me traxxas is the perfect balance of performance and durability, and when you compare what you spend in spare parts in other brands, the price is not that high, but that’s just from my point of view.

I’ve been in and out of the hobby since 1984 and it will always have a place in my heart even if I just assemble and tinker with them nowadays. To me Traxxas was always the brand that tried to get more kids interested in the rc hobby by having vehicles available already assembled. I’ve always assembled kits and painted lexan bodies so to me anything else would have been more for the youngish market. In Southern California there was a hobby model franchise chain called Hobby Shack and that’s when I had the chance to see Traxxas rc buggies and trucks in person. It was fully assembled so that intrigued me. Upon further inspection it looked more toy grade to me. I never had any experience with them but I acknowledge companies like Traxxas for getting kids more involved In the hobby.

Traxxas plastics are second to none, they have modern chassis design in the x-maxx and maxx that are well beyond anything else on the market and their parts are cheap compared to others. However their electronics are pretty tame and not up to scratch even if they are pretty feature rich. And over here in the UK their warranty is junk, it is often 'voided' for abitrary reasons and is sketchy at best when concerning UK consumer rights, oh and proprietary shit. Its a nightmare and costly to buy out of the 'walled garden' if you arent happy with it. My TRX4 electronics went out the first week, my UDR gave me plenty of problems with the axles the gears and the arms, my Slash broke something every single time I used it and almost the same with the rest of the Traxxas cars I had, So I decided to forget about the brand, especially after the rude and discourteous treatment by the customer service, who also treated me like a fool. I don't hate Traxxas, but I can't stand their business model, their lies and their way of stealing money. Personally, I rewired and re-soldered most of the connections on my decade old stampede so I could run my own custom electronics in it. The Traxxas Titan 12t is the pinnacle of planned obsolescence . Dude, Traxxas has earned their reputation as one of the best companies in RC! Let's be honest there are plenty of things to be critical about but nice to see you present "the other side of the coin". I think the biggest criticism of Traxxas though is their Corporate policies, especially their 'litigious tendencies' (they like to sue people 🙄). Protecting your intellectual property is one thing but these guys are ridiculous. I have to say though, this criticism that the Sledge is a clone of the Kraton is total bullshit! The Truggy design has been around for years so, if the Sledge is guilty of copyright infringements, then so is just about every 1/8 scale truggy. I mean, there is only so much you can do with this design. And the differences between the two is enough that saying the Traxxas is a clone is just not true (trying to be nice here, lol). Great video, loved your take on all things Traxxas 👍

once you've been in the hobby long enough to know every company has their pros and cons you understand it's a childish mindset to have brand loyalty but i will say i have been really disappointed with my XMAXX. i bought it brand new because i didn't want to risk buying secondhand and having to replace anything right away. the first month of ownership i've warrantied the ESC and motor, and have had to replace the servo because of how awful the stock one is. my stock wheels blew apart as well. i am happy traxxas has one of the best warranties in the industry with about a week turnaround on parts but it's embarrassing to admit all the problems i've had on a thousand dollar truck. meanwhile my kraton 8s only breaks parts when i jump the shit out of it, electronics have been nothing but solid and i've got twice the runtime as the XMAXX in half the time. i was surprised at the stock settings on the kraton 8s though, you have to dial the punch and motor timing up to feel like you got your money's worth, and they don't even set the servo to 8.4v out of the box even though it can do it. very odd.

daym thats crazy... i take mine to the skate part every week and launch it ez 10ft and land on concrete. never broken a single part except for tires. (I like to 2 wheel drive it on its side causes the other tires to expand and sometimes pop) Guess you either got a bad unit or cant drive. Buddy of mine has a kraton. By now, hes spent more money on replacing the bent metal frame than the actual car. And no, im not a traxxas fanboy. I go to axial for my rock crawlers and i have an arrma infraction. Hating on stuff is what i did when I was a 10 - 12 year kid. Some people grow out of it early, some people just never grow out of it. I tend to stay away from those who are so loyal to a brand and hate on another for no reason other than they got on that same sinking ship. They tend to be a bunch of narcissists too. From my experience, they don't just act this way with RC cars. It's everything in life. Heaven forbid you to bring up politics with those people you won't make back home alive, lol. Subscribed. Great video. O'doyle rules!

It's a brand loyalty thing where everybody feels like they need to pick a side and always hate the other guys. It's the same thing we see with full size vehicles, Ford vs GM vs Mopar. The inflated prices, proprietary hardware are pretty bad though. This hobby is new for me, so I do appreciate how easy it is for me to replace parts on my TRX4 and Rustler 4x4 VXL. But I do think I will eventually branch out to Arma and some of the others. Even thinking about Axial for a small crawler. Respect to those that build theirs from scratch, but that's not for me.

Mind you im talking from australia. Im no traxxas fanboy, but the biggest reason i have 2 is mainly parts availability. Unlike say a kyosho or losi, associated whetever, traxxas bits are easy to get. Plus theres a massive and available aftermarket. So my slash 4x4 i keep pretty stock, but my maxx, well thats had all the suspensions, telemetrys and runs 6s power and breakage is frequent. It tops out at 145kmh (90mph) on the gps and understandibly if you stack it at a high rate of knots things break. But parts are easy and comparably cheap to get and replace.

I own 100% Traxxas and could care less what anyone has to say about it. I'm new to the RC Hobby and watched about every RC video on YT for 6-7 years before making my choice. Traxxas was the clear winner in all categories in my opinion and that was that! I own a Slash Ultimate, Maxx V2 and a Defender and have been 110% satisfied with all of them from day one. I am trying to avoid what I call the "Basher's Paradox"... :) I have seen hundreds if not thousands of examples of that and would like to avoid the schedule of "run it/break it" then spend time ordering parts/waiting for them to arrive and fixing it before it can be ran again, when I can be out there running it in stead! At some point, I'll probably join the "Basher's Paradox" club with one RC and see what I think about that kind of play, but for now, I'm sticking with a more financially sound approach! :) I haven't been in the hobby long enough to know which aspects of it that I prefer yet!

My bandit vxl runs exclusively on $20 M12 Milwaukee drill batteries. It runs roughly the same speed as when it's on my buddy's lipo, if not faster. Battery gets hot, but it's a $20 battery. I've been using them for less than a year so I cannot speak for longevity, but they give me a decent run time. I just cut the cable from my old battery, crimped some simple connectors on it, and stuck them into the M12. The 12v is a little high for the speed controller, but I have not noticed any issues. I originally tried a 18v ryobi with a voltage step down buck converter, and it worked, but was not getting the speeds I wanted.

I have a smaller Traxxas Slash 1/16, and my 5 year old & friends is bashing the shit out of it, and stuff breaks when he smashes into things, and when tiny gravel finds it way into every little crack in the chassis. So I bought this Traxxas because of the availability of parts, the flexibility of its plastic, the possibility of dual batteries (for longer runtimes), the "training mode" (50% speed) on the ESC, and the easy-to-use batteries and chargers (even a 5 year old can handle it without messing things up). So... my question is, are there any similar (or better) alternatives to Traxxas for smaller kids, 5+ years old?

I like Traxxas vehicles especially the TRX 4 and my all-time favorite RC car at the X-maxx but I am not the biggest fan of the company because of what they’ve done small RU-vidrs that had did comparison to their vehicles and companies who make similar looking and designed vehicles. If this was the case with DJI they would’ve went after so many people and so many companies it wouldn’t of been funny. Whenever you talk about a vehicle or trash talk about it make sure that you refer to your vehicle and not the company therefore the company doesn’t have a leg to stand on to come after you because you wasn’t referring to them you were referring to your own vehicle. It’s your vehicle you can do whatever you wanna do and say whatever you wanna say about it.

As someone who's just getting into the hobby, ARRMA and Traxxas are 2 most popular, Losi and TA seem to be the underrated brands. I don't own any big brand RCs yet, but from what I'm seeing, ARRMA is the way to go for the most part. Most of what ARRMA makes as of right now seem like 5 star products overall, however, I don't see a lot of great Traxxas cars (electric) other than the Slash Ultimate, E-REVO 2.0, Maxx 2.0, XMAXX, XRT, and MAYBE the Sledge (Sledge has horrible motor mounting system and gearbox design). But other than those, most of their electric stuff seems like garbage. But I can't say the same about what I see from ARRMA and Losi. Am I wrong? I'm new, but I've done tons and tons of research on most electric RCs as of 2023. And these were my findings, and my unbiased observation. Don't get me wrong, Horizon Hobby stuff with Spektrum servos being shotty, ARRMA/Losi definitely isn't perfect, but seem much superior with most of their cars. (Electric stuff, I'm not interested in gas/nitro, so I haven't done that research) Edit: I don't plan on being brand religious. I believe if it's a good car, it's a good car. And even if it's not great, if it's the one that suits what you want it for and you love it, it's the best. For me, I'm looking into the ARRMA 3S Senton because it suits my location/terrain, looks awesome, and from what I've heard in my research, is one of the easiest to work on, most durable, and reliable cars on the market. But hey, maybe you'd prefer the Big Rock, Vorteks, maybe a Kraton, or hell, Traxxas Slash or something. It depends completely on your driving style, driving terrain, and environment. All I know, is that the ARRMA Senton seems to be the best for my wants and needs, so that's what I'm going to get over a Traxxas Slash or TA SC10, or Losi Tenacity. (And yeah, I like short course trucks lol. They are just so cool to watch in the dirt!)

I think if you have plenty of cash to spare and you live in the US then yeah, Traxxas is the brand to own. However, not all of us have the ability to throw endless amounts of money into the hobby, and not all of us live in the US. I picked a Traxxas MAXX as my first RC and that got me into the hobby, no regrets, it's a great RC, super durable, sort of.... Pretty quickly the ESC died, shortly after the servo died, after having installed a proper servo then the servo saver died, and the list goes on. So before I knew it I was in the endless upgrade spiral. Not a terrible thing at that time for me as it sped up my learning curve as I was getting into the hobby, but I was very organised and keep a record of all my upgrading and spending and I'm not even going to mention how much money I've put into my MAXX. That's when I realised I had to experiment with other brands, so I tried the cheapest I could get, a Wltoys 124017 and boy that thing blew my mind. I mean it was an eye opener, for that price what you get is actually pretty decent, parts are super cheap and it's loads of fun. So that plus all the stories about Traxxas' questionable business practices made me decide I wouldn't support them anymore, at least for the foreseeable future. Since then I've gotten a few more Wltoys, ZD Racing and more recently a Team Corally Kronos XTR 2022 which is an insane value for money. I can not justify $800 for a Sledge, when I can get an XTR plus better electronics for considerably less, plus in order to get the Sledge up to XTR standards you have the M2C the hell out of it which is another considerable amount of money on top of everything else.

Good video! I don’t own anything Traxxas but that’s mainly because I prefer self assembly to RTR models. From what I see they make some really good gear. The main thing I dislike about Traxxas (and I can see in the comments I’m not alone) is their patent trolling. This is a truly despicable practice and it’s a real shame they feel the need to do this instead of competing on the merits of the company and products. They should ditch the lawyers and stay focussed on making great RC and I’m sure the RC community will reward them for it.

Both my trucks are Traxxas, never had a lot of the issues most say they have other than one had a dead motor, but it's a super old stampede. That being said both are more RPM parts than traxxas parts. The stampede has a Hobby wing Max 10 sct combo, my 2wd slash has a castle copperhead 10 combo in it, and both have aftermarket servos so I could turn the voltage up. And swapped out the receivers for that reason, and to have them both bound to one remote with a screen. But like you said, they're simple to work on, parts are everywhere but online. Here in Canada I find local stores are better than anything online (amazon, ebay etc). And theres tons of info on them, everything is accessible and easy.

Ok, the elephant in the room... Traxxas is a bully in the industry. No, I'm not going to say that their lawsuit against ARRMA was a problem, because the suit itself was technically legitimate. The patent that the suit was about, however, is NOT, as prior art of cantilever suspension exists in the hobby - Schumacher and OFNA both produced models with that form of suspension before Traxxas released the REVO. And no, "they should have patented it when they had the chance" is NOT a valid defense, prior art ALWAYS takes precedence. They've also gone so far as to sue AMAZON over a quadcoper design, one that is very similar to many other designs on the market, and have also attempted to sue the USHRA to get out of their end of a licensing agreement. Additionally, Traxxas imposes percentage-based quotas on their dealers. If the dealer doesn't meet these quotas, they lose their ability to stock or order Traxxas products. And often times the only way to meet those quotas is to actively push Traxxas products over other "competing" brands. This is a highly anti-competitive practice and I'm surprised Traxxas hasn't been taken to court over it as it blatantly violates antitrust law. Traxxas makes some alright models - they're outdated but they serve their purpose and in some cases do it quite well. But the company is a cancer in this hobby. Horizon actually dropped Traxxas in response to numerous issues with them.

I know this is an older video but my experience with Traxxas has been terrible. I had the trx4 defender, XRT and The Sledge. All broke within minutes of using them. Particularly the Sledge and XRT. The XRT blew tires, Servo and The motor first run on 6s. Fixed it. Second run esc blew, replaced with Spektrum until my hobbywing system came in. Literally everything broke on the vehicle. I sank over $3k into the vehicle to get it to be as reliable as my Kraton and it still wasn’t. Sure, parts support up the Yang but, their parts are cheap and break every time ya take it out. Now, my losi or Arrma’s, all I do is clean them Up and go. I hardly ever replace anything. So, reason 1 being they’re Chinese cheap entry level vehicles. Reason 2. They’re trying to monopolize the rc industry with their law suits which is bs. Hence why I call them #Trashass

i don't think a lot of people hate traxxas, but their RTR vehicles have overall lower quality parts (most of it is plastic) then for example arma or losi has out of the box. they just have a overall bigger market share, so that is why a lot of beginners start with a traxxas. i have 3 traxxas cars (2/3s) that have needed more maintenance then my arrma 6s, that only requires some fresh oil, and a set of wheels every 2/3 months.

Well said. I don't have a problem with their products but their company ethics. I think their success is well deserved due to their ready to run hobby grade products in the late 90's when everyone else was doing kits, it's basically a no brainer for beginers or just people who want the driving experience of an RC without having to build assemble and picking out your owned electrics ect.. And their products are decent quality, maybe not the sharpest tools in the shed but reasonably well built, reliable and as you put it, very beginer friendly to work on and still more durable then Chinese RC that have be coming out in the last 15 years. But yes the lawsuit rubbed me the wrong way especially since they didn't actually invent their paton they were suing over but just where just the first to paion it on an rc vechile. They also flag RU-vid channels for mentioning their product or liking it to another RC that's looks like their product then blatenly copy the company they sued and do the exact same thing they accuse others of doing. Also the proprietary ectectronics is a real dick move, just like Apple
