Why does my GPS watch measure distance wrong?

Why does my GPS watch-a Garmin Forerunner 220-measure a 13.11-mile half marathon as 13.41 miles? It's caused by the limitation of civilian GPS accuracy.

Lol people complaining about a 0.3 mile difference. I'm trying to figure out why my watch says I went 45 miles on a 3 mile hike. Now that's a legitimate problem.

On Garmin devices, make sure to measure every second instead of smart recording to get best accuracy for GPS.

@@myerssss9167 it's burried in Settings on device. Whether or not you have this option may depend on which device you have.

@Anti Zenith Activist Not all satellites are operational yet and on my fenix 5 plus, the accuracy seemed worse using gps+galileo compared to gps-only, when I tested it back in 2019.

It's not only the measurement every second but also the fact that in a city like New York you have a lot of signal reflection and interference. Do the same distance somewhere in the backcountry and it's much more accurate.

Stumbled upon this while trying to trouble shoot the inaccurate distance tracking for another Garmin device (An Astro 900 dog tracking kit). In my case it is always overestimating the distance by a huge amount both for me as well as my dog. Eg: If I leave the receiver outside with a clear satellite signal - you can see the distance racking up even if it is simply sitting on the table. I suspect that what is happening is that the receiver software is taking changes in satellite accuracy as distance travelled. So for example: Sometimes your signal can vary moment to moment so that your accuracy range varies (eg: Your position could be accurate to within 15 yards, and then shift to accurate within 5 yards if the signal strength changes). The Garmin software (my guess) takes this change in accuracy as "distance" and adds eg: 10 yards to the track. At any rate, the distance tracking is so inaccurate as to be useless - but the actual track is pretty accurate - so it does serve its main purpose.

Please any idea why there is sometimes a bid difference in distance and pace when I run with my iPhone and my Apple Watch??? ( Bluetooth turned off ) the Watch is showing longer distance and faster pace. Do you reckon that the iPhone is more accurate because it has bigger GPS receiver ??? Thanks

What happens when it is very inaccurate. I ran 5km (according to my Garmin watch at a pace of 4.13 second per km). In reality, my guess is that I had run about 3 km at around 7 mins per km). Why is the watch so far out. Also when it transfers it to strava, it says that the time of run was 7.35pm. Real time was 1pm

We will soon have a three times more accurate technology thanks to Galileo ;) Only a few smartphones are compatible right now, but it should improve a lot !

I ran my usual 8.25 mile route today. My Garmin showed 8.27 miles (no biggie), but it showed a best pace of 1:30/mile. I did not pause my watch at all. Did the satellite "lose" me, then miscalculate my position? Did my watch lose time for a brief period?

What about running on a track?
@GriffinHammond
@GriffinHammond 5 месяцев назад
Running on a track *can* be an issue, when GPS tends to cut corners. That's why some watches, including my Apple Watch Ultra (that I run with in 2024) try to identity when I'm running on a track. (It asks me which lane, so it can track my meters appropriately.)

The course is measured 100% accurate, on the shortest route. It's natural you would be over a few hundred yards. You're nowhere near a straight line. You're jammed with hundreds of people. Going at least 20 yards extra per mile. Especially the first 10 miles. Thats why it's going to be over. You did not run 13.11. You actually ran 13.41.

That's right-courses are measured by the perfectly shortest route, which is why I like to "run the tangents" to keep the course as short as I can. I've done the math on running tangents vs. running straight down the middle of the course-and 0.3 miles, just blaming tangents, would be pretty high for a half marathon. For example, not running the tangents at the Chicago Marathon results in running an extra 0.139mi. That's significant-a full extra minute of running-but doesn't fully account for the level of error my GPS watch consistently introduced way back in 2017. I do think GPS watch technology has improved since then. I think it's fair to say when you see a distance error like this, it's both phenomena at work.

How does the GPS on a phone work so accurately?
@chrishausheer2385
@chrishausheer2385 7 лет назад
it doesn't, but if you are talking about road navi it is programmed to put the icon aligned on the road and also the refresh rate is faster than on a watch.
7 лет назад
it cooperates with another standarts, like wifi tracking (which is even more inaccurate, but together with gps it is better than any of them), in europe even with glonass (basically it is gps, but with different name, but more satelites - better accuracy...), mobile site tracking (less accurate than gps/glonass), compass, gyroscope... if you compare all of them, you get almost perfect accuracy... and thanks to compass, gyroscope and accelerometer you can get almost 100% accurate tracking... so that watches only care about what gps says... but mobile phone read much more data and it can calculate your movement precisely as fck :D
