The placement of the waist is meant to make her look frumpier in her clothes and bigger than she actually is. Normally the empire waist sits at the narrowest part just below the bust, giving a thinning affect. Because the waist of her dresses sit on the widest part of her bust it make her look bigger and shorter than she really is.
Wow..I actually disagree..her mother was very cautious, thoughtful, strong, and protective. She was cold…but she really did love her daughters. Everything she did was to protect her family.
The green is because her mum finally looses faith in her getting married in the book (shes like 28 or something) and she gets to buy her own clothes finally
@@saraalfaroferreyra4620 its hard to say as they are jumping around in the order and in the books the timeline is very slow, both Gregory and Hyacinth are grown when she gets married but well have to see
@@saraalfaroferreyra4620 In the books there is a time jump since it takes place after Benedicts story (which has like a 2 year time jump I beleive, his whole story takes like 4 years or something) But since they switched the order
well in the book, it said that it's green and it's the color she's always wanted to wear and her mother lost all hope of her finding a husband so she gets to pick her own dresses😂
To be fair, Lady Featherington was more complacent when it came to Penelope. She was satisfied when Prudence and Philippa were married off. I think Lady Featherington was okay with Penelope's "spinsterhood" because she has someone taking care of her and Penelope is independently wealthy. She has money for them to survive.
The actress is gorgeous and I’m glad they’re finally being allowed to show that. The show has done its best for the last few years to not do anything to show off her loveliness. I think of all those high school drama shows where the heroine was dressed in dowdy clothes that didn’t show off their best qualities and then one day they suddenly were showing off their best qualities and I feel like this is like that. The beautiful girl that was always there.
Yes yes! the type of stays or corset is totally dependent on the final silhouette they wanted to achieve. Victorian style corsets in regency gowns just NEVER made sense lol
It's bc Pen freed herself from her mother trying to marry her off bc she is already 28 in the books and is "off age for marriage" so she doesn't need her mother choosing her clothes anymore so she can dress in whatever color she likes and actually bc she starts wearing those colors is what catches Colin's attention for her as a woman the first time he comes back from his trip.
I think they do this to give the season’s main character their own spotlight. I noticed Colin was more produced and handsome than usual too. (Also Penelope has a “glow up” situation in the book too!)
Pen speaking to the printer had me really listening to see if that was her normal accent or something she was forcing. I know she’s actually from Galway, Ireland but her accent sounded pretty awkward 😬
@@klaudia6057 I think it was meant to sound forced because she’s playing a sheltered upper class British girl trying on what she thinks an Irish accent is
Apart from her physical one, I'm really interested in her personal and mental glow up, last season she did pretty cuestionable things and her redemption arc better be good.
The styling teams definitely take a lot of liberties, but I always have to remind myself when Bridgerton pops up on my For You page that it's historical *fantasy* , so regency rules all go out the window.
They're not exactly going for historical accuracy that's why. They already said it in their video (the designers of the costumes) that they're not going complete historical accuracy.
I know bridgerton isn't supposed to be historically accurate. But can we at least get good costumes and hair? I'm tired of the over modernization of period dramas- I love that it's not an all white cast like most period dramas would be, but I don't really watch period dramas for accuracy- I watch them for good costumes. Bridgerton has decent costumes to show the bridge between history and today, but I just....UGH especially that corset scene in the beginning??
Loose hair in period films and tv bothers me A LOT! I saw a trailer for that most recent adaptation of Persuasion, and saw that loose hair for the heroine, and gave it a hard pass!
Bridgerton is NOT a period piece. It's like the 1800s in a London alternate universe. The costuming and hair departments have said that the time period is just the starting point for inspiration.
Omg I know right!! Women in period gowns with loose hair are often beautiful, but they look like they needed to evacuate the house in haste so they forgone the usual hairdressing process 😂
Love how she's made up this season. I already ordered another Highlighter, and another bronze eyeshadow (like I needed it). Soooo excited for the second part of the season!
Regency dress.. 1950's hair which would scream "I'm a woman of ill repute" in the Regency era. Also loving the chamber music version of Madonna's "Material Girl"!
@@CrustyUgg yeah, it's a fantasy, never meant to be "accurate." The youtubers I watch that do historical dress are very aware of it and make sure to point that out. I don't watch the show, but I have seen lots of pieces here and there and would probably be annoyed if I tried to watch the whole thing.
@@CrustyUggI feel like you may just have to take it at face value? It doesn’t claim to be a retelling of real historical events, or claim to be “loosely based” on the events of “xyz”. I could see if it was a show about Marie Antoinette (or another real historical figure) and the dress and hair, etc. we’re not accurate, but I think the point of the show is to bring forth the drama of a different time period while not being 1000% accurate to the tee. Just drams from the Regency Era🤗
Because in the book her mother thought she would on the shelf for the life so stopped caring what she wore and she was allowed to wear more flattering clothes.
Sie looks so so so beautiful!! I really wasnt feeling her (featherington) vibe in the past, so i guess the creators achieved what they wanted 😂 amazing glow up!!
Pen looks beautiful, her mama wasn't doing her any favours with those oddly cut citrus-hued gowns and fussy hairdo's...then again Portia has zero taste
Am i the only one who found both Pen and Collin really annoying. Maybe because i see a lot of pen reflected in myself. I want to like them so bad but i just don’t at all. 😂
I think I get what you mean. Like they aren't my favorite and sometimes it is hard to like them. I still think they fit as couple and there is also something likeable about them but also something annoying. I am not sure if it's me or if it's something about the series but I loved Colin in season 1 and I didn't like him as much in season 2 as 8 did in season 1.
Very annoying. I think they've tainted the pen/Colin arch with earlier seasons where Colin is outright nasty to pen and then having pen treat Eloise so terribly. There's no coming back from that no matter what the writers try. It just isn't believable.
This!! I wanted to like them soooo bad but between his fickleness and naïveté and then Pen and her self righteousness ugh. She’s incredibly selfish and tries to disguise as her “helping” people. Really she’s just covering her own ass or keeping Colin to herself. The way she treated Eloise really turned me off of her completely. I’m almost dreading an entire season of their annoying back and forth friend-zone. I just want to see Kate and Anthony at this point 😅
I like Pen. She’s not my favourite but I didn’t find her too annoying… Collin, on the other hand, can go skip rocks. My dislike for him has a lot to do with his behaviour towards Pen, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t also because the actor looks a bit like that one dude in Maze Runner and I dislike that character very much…
Why does she wear blue? Because her mother finally gave up on pushing yellow and pink onto her. She accepted the fact that Pen would not get married and let her choose her own gowns. Pen always wanted to wear blue and other colors that suited her better. So this is not a costume decision to show her character evolving. It's a plot device to show her character evolving that was already in the books :)
Yes but pen’s favorite color is green. She begins to wear that to show her independence. Having her wear blue is in fact a costume decision since it’s Bridgerton blue
She lost weight like a whole 6 years before her and Colin were even close to being involved. Her weight lose also symbolized that she was too young in her first season because it’s all baby fat.
I disagree about the other women on the show having proper empire waists, in season 1 everyone's dresses were very ill-fitting with the waistline across the underboob. Season 2 is better, but not great.
Before her mom dressed her in dresses that made her look ‘frumpy’. By lowering the seam to below her bust & lifting the ‘girls’ also + giving her waves in her hair; makes her look thinner & more ‘glowing’ & thus more attractive.
After reading oodles of Comments and listening to the designers purposefully 'stray' from accurate historical recreations, I'm convinced that the plan--all along--was to invoke CREATIVE ANACHRONISM!! And, I LOVE IT!!! It is beautiful and smart!! Who cares about accuracy? It's been done, like, forever. If this is Regency FANTASY--FANTASY on!!!
i think she’s gonna try to get over him/give him the cold shoulder all the while he turns into a lovesick puppy. i think he will say something like his reaction was him denying his feelings/suppressing them and what he said was so harsh because he was panicking that his friendly gesture was taken the wrong way or smth
Sort of has the same energy as Darcy saying "not handsome enough to tempt me" except Elizabeth wasn't in love with Darcy at that point, so she laughed out loud instead.
okay after reading benedict’s story SPOILERS HERE IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO READ THE BOOKS the scene where he announces he would never court penelope is actually in the third book. basically colin was telling A and B he was exhausted with violets insistence to wed that season and how she has him set on penelope, and since he’s known her since they were little, he says “i will never marry penelope featherington!” and she’s literally like right behind him but she actually retorts instead of running away
I thought they were just putting her in the colors that naturally suit her complexion. I look almost exactly the same 😅 and I love wearing those same colors
For Christs sake I need this season on air pronto And if i dont get my fill of kathony…… i hope they give kathony as much of a parallel storyline as they did for featheringtons during season 2
