A useful explanation of the use of a counterweight. It is, of course, very simplified. Not all lifts are driven through a worm gear. High speed lifts are direct drive, but the balance principle is the same. Most hydraulic lifts do not use a counterweight.
It’s worm gear unit( it’s a worm over wheel unit in the diagram) also there quite a few traction lift without counterweight nowadays using wrapped sheaves and ropes fixed to the bottom and top of a car working in a push and pull arrangement.
