Why Does the Left Landing Gear Touch First? Helicopter Instructor Pilot Explains.

EDIT Thrust goes the other way. The Tail Rotor is blowing a bunch of air to the left but the actual thrust vector is in the direction of movement.
Let's explore why most helicopters touch down left skid (or wheel) first. Is this always the case? We'll find out. This is a simple way to look at it and also understand the key to how a helicopter can hover.

Dude. You are my new favorite RU-vid channel. I'm about 70% there with the fixed wing, but I've been wanting to get into Rotary wing, THANK YOU for explaining all of this in such a great, easy to understand visual. From one Afghan Vet (CDN TF 01-2007) Who's bird was far less cool since it had 6 wheels and didn't fly...... Thank you for making this in a way that NCO's at the lower level could still understand! Also, You guys were hands down our favorite Blackhawk crews. You guys and gals would fly into Hell itself to get an ISAF soldier out of harms way and back to help. I've always said any time I meet a blackhawk pilot in real life, the first round will always be on me. You guys earned it tenfold.

Thanks so much for the comment! I feel bad about this video because the thrust vector arrow I put in the animation is pointing the wrong way! But thanks!

Translating Tendency ! Now I understand why the Gazelle in DCS World behaves like this. The Video helped me a lot ! 👍

Well explained. Wish I had known this earlier, saving a lot of rolling-in-the-dust landings.

Can't wait for that "real" helicopter to appear as a full module in DCS World. Highly informative as usual, enjoyed the visual explanation of the various torque and translating forces, as understanding those gives your brain a reference point for what's happening, and the nuanced control input needed to counteract them. Helicopters feel like a constant torque management device.

Is that happening? The one that’s already out is pretty substantial

@@SnakPakFlight I don't know for sure, but it is pretty good. I haven't flown it in a while.

I am curious if you guys in the Army treat VRS and Settling with power as two different things. Up in Canada it's taught as two different things and was wondering your stance on it, Great vid!

Our training circular basically lumps them in as one in the same. But I understand how they can be seen as two different things.

👍 would be great if you did one about tail rotor effectiveness. When it loses authority and such... cheers

What is the best aviation head set I should for rotary wing flight school, I have no budget constraints ?

Hmmm, well I’ve only flown helicopters with a full helmet with com system. I’ve never flown a small piston helicopter. That said, I do have my fixed wing PPL and I got a Bose A20. It’s great and has noise canceling and bluetooth. They just released a better A30. Just make sure whatever you get, make sure it has the helicopter plug. It’s different than a GA plug. Also check with your instructor that whatever helo you’re training on uses that plug.

Unrelated question. Do you guys have ability to manually activate the ELT? We've been getting a bunch of 77 codes and stuff going out over guard that turns out to be "accidental" thanks.
