Why does the US have 800 military bases around the world?

It costs taxpayers billions to keep US bases around the globe running. Why are they there in the first place?
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
The US has around 800 military bases in other countries, which costs an estimated $100 billion annually, a number that could be much higher depending on whether you count the bases still open in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is according to American University professor David Vine in his book Base Nation, in which he seeks to quantify the financial, environmental, and human costs of keeping these bases open.
The word "base" is a broad term that captures all sorts of military posts, stations, camps, forts, etc. around the globe. The Pentagon specifics that a "base site" is any geographic location that is "owned by or leased to, or otherwise possessed" by the military.
Most of these bases cropped up after World War II when the US took position as the global leader and peacekeeper in and around Japan and Germany. The Korean and Cold Wars sped up the expansion of US military infrastructure to other countries. Containing Soviet communism led the US to set up posts all over the globe to ensure a geopolitical foothold in places that were vulnerable to Soviet influence - which basically meant everywhere.
Even though Japan, Germany, and Korea are now American allies and stable democracies, thousands of troops and many bases still remain in these countries. Even though the Cold War is over, much of the military infrastructure built up in response to that era remains operational.
American taxpayers are in charge of the bill for keeping these bases running. This estimated $100 billion is pumped out of our economy to the location of these bases. It's a massive military system that ensures US influence in every corner of the planet, and given the uncontested nature of this widespread strategy, there isn't likely to be any change soon.

America is the head of a worldwide imperial empire from Haiti to the Philippines .Many nations are run by US proxies or surrogates who allow US corporations to exploit their mineral resources .They also provide a market for US armaments ,goods etc . In Latin nations the Papa Docs ,Pinochet's Somoza's Batista's ,Noriega's and Oligarchic families were protected from local democratic forces by CIA trained Death Squads .if need be forces from nearby US military bases were always available to suppress any resistance . British colonialist invaded nations ,overcame local armed resistance .then installing a standing army from among the populace and their own civil servants to administer and to exploit the colony . US elites prefer to to invade set up a compliant proxy then withdraw to a nearby military base ,set up for that reason .Imperialism or a form of Neo-colonialism .They failed in Cuba ,Iraq and after 14 years of bombing ,invasion and occupation set up a regime of war lords and drug barons .but with the Taliban stronger than ever .and bombing "safe areas " in Kabul at will .they will also fail in Afghanistan But who cares $billions of tax payers money have gone into the accounts of those who profit from perpetual wars .and vassal states on Russian borders look promising to the arms contractors .

Carrying forward U.S. goals supporting the Antarctic Treaty. Granted that's not a military base in the traditional sense, but it is an outpost of personnel to ensure that other countries honor the Antarctic Treaty. I wasn't able to find anything about their affiliation to the U.S. Military - probably next to nothing besides daily check-ins or briefs.

That's an easy argument to make based on numbers alone but you fail to consider technological advance. The US ICBM's are where power is drawn. So i'm just trying to understand this. We have 800 military bases, basically completing surrounding Russia. One of which appears to be in "international waters" in the Indian Ocean. But if China starts to build a little base off their coast, it is an "international incident" or if Russia tries to build a, god-forbid, 9th military base outside their country, it's "cold-war era postering". If Russia had 1/10th of amount of bases surrounding the US, I could not IMAGINE what we would be saying here. We have active bases so close to Russia... it would be like Russia having military sites just off the coast of San Francisco and tons of bases in Mexico and Canada. Seems a little hypocritical no?

Neurotic Knight totally disagree... first you are getting your definiton for google, not a historic site/university. Second many historians agree the US is and has been since the collapse of the USSR (some even say WWII) that usa has been an empire. Is it like the romans, the persian, the mongals, the nazis, the spanish, the japanese empires... no but it is an empire make no mistake. In fact it inherited the British empire. Some now call it the Anglo-American Empire.

We have significant military presences in some of the most powerful and most sovereign countries in the world. Imperialism has nothing to do with it, otherwise Iraq, a country were in for a decade, would be part of America. Clearly it's not.

As a US Military vet, I think it was time we down sized a bit, some of those bases are rapidly aging and require large amounts of financing to keep in operational condition. I would suggest closing enough low priority area bases to where we have a minimum of a few hundred million if now a few billion back into our economy. End or cutting back foreign aid needs to happen in a big way if we're to move forward without any more massive amounts of debt added to the tax payers plate.

I think there's a certain sense of hubris involved as well, the mentality that without the US, the world would fall apart. The "respect" that the US once had seems to be falling apart more and more, and at least from a Swedish perspective, we mostly hope that the US doesn't do something stupid to screw everything up. The whole "it's our responsibility to save the world" mantra is a very dangerous one. A lot of hate towards the US comes from that.

It's amazing how most people still havent realized how the us government uses the military as a form of social support... those who can't get a job or a good university education can join the military and earn a living, so they can contribute to the economy and so on.. If you adjust the number of people in the army to the average of a western country like the uk, and then count the remaining as unemployed, the us would have a massive unemployment problem.. it's not about controlling the planet or anything like that, it's a brilliant way to provide state social support in a country that looks at public healthcare (and at state funding in general) as bad thing...

right, and the infrastructure to support the economy occurs even in MDCs without massive militaries, they must have HUGE unemployment, and yet they don't, and when they do people are still better supported. You don't seem to understand that employment is a privilege to those who are employers, not employees.

Djobo Kuwali 99% of those also have publich healthcare, good public schools and universities, state pensions and so on... the us have none of those, so the military is a great way for the government to provide a form of social support/public employment in a way that is acceptable for the general opinion

TheBlackJacksItalia you know what's even better? A much smaller military. An economy is supposed to help a country's people live comfortably, you don't need a multi-trillion dollar military industrial complex that siphons money from taxpayers in order to provide the services that could have been provided ten-fold. The military is time, people, and resources, using power to further global corporate interests, nothing more. As far as providing peace, the conflict overseas is a direct result of this process, not a reaction to it.

First off, our welfare state makes up more than 50% of our taxes. which is a scam. Also, these "800 bases" count for weather stations embassy's, and joint operation bases that we share with multiple countries so don't think we are picking up the entire bill. We are there for strategic reasons, if we leave try to imagen what would happen to South Korea or Japan from China and North Korea. What Would happen to Lithuanian from Russia? the same as Ukraine? Or Israel the only true democracy in the entire middle east. Once we pull out countries get cocky and start to expand. We start to pull out in Japan, what does China do? They start to threaten their neighbors with man made islands.its one big game of chess and I hope we wont let our allies become the pawn.

I'm living in Germany in the area of the Ramstein Air Base, it's pretty impressing seeing this economic impact of the soldiers and the citys around them. There are even American police cars patroling together with the Germans, if there are any Americans breaking the law or needing the help. If the Air base will ever be closed, i think the area would suffer from a huge economic loss.

You'd be right, the US marine base in Puerto Rico's small island of Vieques were closed down due to controversy. The islands economy has suffered dearly. The military enforced fishing laws around the island; now they tend to go unenforced and poorly managed, the fishing economy has collapsed. Crime is up now that MPs don't contribute to the police force. The marines no longer spend money there and the locals' money leaves to PR's mainland. The land that was used as a training area (a large chunk of the island, about 1/3) can't be used and is now a natural reserve because they can't guarantee all munitions had gone off, even though they are currently clearing some portions. This was determined before the military was removed. Regardless on a fun note, the vote turned up about 150% of the population of the island. Gotta love democracy!

In addition, countries like Japan share in the cost of hosting, and providing facilities for the U.S. A lot of U.S. bases in Europe, Japan and South America have been closed over time since the end of the Cold War.

I know they started it but damn how a country could forgive that is beyond me. They attacked a military base and we demolished two of their city's with women and children. How can a country as dignified as Japan forgive such a horrific atrocity?? I guess if you can't beat them join them must be their new ideology.

Ryan Kenny the amount of lives lost from those bombs was a tragedy but a necessary evil almost. The only other plan to end the war was an invasion of the Japanese mainland with and estimated over 1 million casualties on each side not including the civilian lives that would of been done. Think about it. Around 200,000 vs several million. It's never an easy call to make but that war was an extremely bloody war where just the US would lose more lives in a single day than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined since they've started. One thing the US does do is after we finish a war, we help the other nations rebuild. We helped Japan establish a government and helped with rebuilding the nation.

Thanks captain obvious! You went to history class good job. What you said most every one knows that took world history but what I'm saying is that Japan should hate us for that. It would be like two men in a fight and one man is winning and ask the other to surrender but he will not surrender so the other man takes a grenade and sticks it in one of his friends pocket who is standing by watching and blows him to smithereens. Once again he asks the man to surrender but now the man concedes for the sake of his people. Where is the honor in that? I'm sure the million people that would of died would have been soldiers or people wanting to die for their cause instead of two civilian filled cities where 800,000 or so innocent people died. What is the point of war if you can't protect the innocent no matter the race or ethnicity?
@KitamusPrime
@KitamusPrime 9 лет назад
Thank you for the attitude little miss sassy frass but ummm it was nothing like that. and those numbers? Where did you get 800,000? 240,000 died from the blasts and after. And only soldiers would of died? Have you not seen any videos of the wars? Bombs back then werent like the ones now where you can land it on a table top from miles away. You flew over an area and dropped as many as you can. And we both know I went to history class so if you did too you'd know that the Japanese actually killed 4 million more people than Nazi Germany, told the island people of Japan lies about the rape and murder the US was doing so they committed mass suicide and how they forced women into military sex slaves. Like I said we helped them rebuild their country from the ground up. Just like what we did with Germany and South Korea. Now they're a large trading partners and strong allies. That's why you're not in charge because you'd take things personally and no progress would be made.

The US spends more than all first world nations on their military, We also have the highest GDP and are the Primary military force in NATO. The US is essentially the military for the other NATO nations meaning they don't have to spend as much to guarantee protection for their citizens. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures#cite_note-IISS-2 I know it's a wiki article but it's sourced
@EasternAnime
@EasternAnime 8 лет назад
***** Why compare it to GDP at all, why not simply look at the amount being spent in terms of annual tax revenue? Isn't that a more accurate portrayal of yearly spending trends. I mean at the end of the day the u.s. still spends more. The question is , is it worth it?. How many military bases do we need. Is it necessary to be involved in yemen, somalia, afghanistan, pakistan, syria, and iraq? We could be spending the money we're spending on the military on schools, and bridges and a better health care system. My point is our priorities are not in the right place. thousands die in the u.s. every year because they lack basic medical care.
@intensitydigital
@intensitydigital 8 лет назад
EasternAnime both Medicare and Social Security are each larger than the military budged in the US (if you want to talk about where the majority of Tax dollars are going). Even if the US were to take billions from the Military (since we don't really need a presence in so many countries) it would just be mismanaged like the money that is spent on government projects already. Yes thousands die because they can't afford proper medical care but if the government were to hand all medical care like Canada and the UK do how good of a job do you think they would do? Keep in mind this is the same institution that is >16 trillion dollars in debt because of Medicare and Social Security, the same institution that continues to mandate a terribly broken educational system, constantly loses money (and by lose i mean we just don't know where it goes, it's just gone), and in recent years hasn't handled anything well. Everything is too bloated with pointless procedures, paperwork, and general bureaucracy to be called anything close to efficient. Do you think throwing money at these issues will solve these problems or bloat them even more? Also I should mention that Medical malpractice is the 3rd leading cause of Death in the US as it is. It kills ~400,000 people every year. www.healthcareitnews.com/news/deaths-by-medical-mistakes-hit-records

This base is actually rented, so the military pays the Marshallese government just to use this space each year. Well, since imperialism means "a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force...." Of course, this is only the modern definition; imperialism (e.g., during WW2) originally meant to "rule by an emperor." So, US imperialism (or ANY country's attempt to increase power and influence) is not the same as Japanese imperialism during WW2 or Napoleonic imperialism. US, Chinese, and Russian imperialism puts a lot of conflict in the world today.

It is also often the main method that they bankrupt themselves. The fear that creates such massive spending is an empire’s biggest weakness. well my view on the US policy on keeping the peace all over the world is totally different because after watching the result of the Iraqi invasion what US left for the Iraqis is nothing but chaos and more poverty another example is Libya where US assassinated the muamar qazafi and what Libyans have now is the same thing chaos,terrorism and poverty and syria is another battle ground for the US where they are more interested in bombing on urban areas. if US just stop interfering in the internal affairs of the other countries then there will be more peace and stability around the globe

Personally, I believe every one of these bases should be closed. They cost about $100 billion per year. That should literally be reduced to $0. However, to characterize them as expensive compared to other parts of the U.S. budget is simply false. The entire defense budget is about $598 billion ($100 billion being foreign bases). Medicare and Health cost $986 billion. Social Security costs $895 billion. Food Assistance costs $104 billion. Compared to other nations, we do spend more on our military. However, this isn't surprising considering we have a much higher GDP and overall federal budget. We have the world's most powerful military. Yet, that makes up less than 16% of the federal budget and less than 4% of our GDP. If you wish do decrease defense spending, I would agree with you. However, I'd first like to decrease and eliminate all illegitimate roles the government has undertaken. I believe the only legitimate role of government is to protect the people's rights to their own person and property (i.e. you can't murder, rape, steal, commit fraud, etc.) through law enforcement, a justice system, and a military. Everything else should be the responsibility of the people to decide for themselves as they see fit. Defense = $598 billion. Add federal law enforcement and justice system and we'll bring that number to $600 billion. $3.8 trillion (federal budget) minus $600 billion = $3.2 trillion. Cut out $3.2 trillion from the federal budget and then I'll be happy to also cut an extra $100 billion in foreign bases.

@johnc1014
@johnc1014 8 лет назад
Jayden Southworth We only spend around 3.4% of our GDP on defense, yet we have the most powerful military in the world and in history, by far. 1) This is due to our massive GDP compared to most. That 3.4% is still half a trillion dollars. 2) We have enormous technological innovation that allows us to use that money more effectively than most. Even militaries like the Chinese, Russians, or North Koreans, don't compare. Despite being larger in numbers, ours is still more powerful due to technology. We only have about 1.3 million active service members. That's about a 4th of a percent of the U.S. population. If we spent 20-30% of our GDP in defense, I'd think we'd be trying to completely invade and conquer the rest of the world. If not, there'd be a ton of waste. Saudi Arabia spends the most as a percentage of GDP (13.7%). Not a single country in the world today, spends 20-30%. The only times we've spent more than 20% of our GDP on defense were during WWI and WWII. And, that was back when we were not a world superpower. By the way, I don't want to make the U.S. weaker at all. I still want us to be the most powerful military power in the world and in history. That said, I think we could use these funds a bit more efficiently and effectively. I don't believe we should be involved in any nation that we aren't currently at war with. I think we should act as a deterrent to aggressors around the world. Don't attack the U.S., don't invade other nations, and don't commit genocide against your own people. If you do any of these three things, you run the risk of the U.S. declaring war on you and forcing you to comply by whatever means necessary. Aside from that, other nations should be allowed to operate as they see fit, without U.S. involvement. Also, before we ever got rid of any bases, I would first like to eliminate many illegitimate roles of government. I see law enforcement, a justice system, and a military as the only legitimate roles. All else should be eliminated. Then, we can focus on reducing and making more efficient these few legitimate roles.
@johnc1014

@@Yabuturtle I dont really understand it either tbh, the only thing I could think of is just logistics, no other country has logistics like america. I think it's just a sense of security and the idea if your not first your last mentality, and just the thought of being able to send troops anywhere at anytime.

any chance to get a list of these "bases"? I think your definition is very broad. I suspect 80% are mailing addresses loosely connected to DoD. I say this as a former Naval Officer who spent a 8 years trying to get overseas. Also having 40k in Japan and 40k in Germany is quite a small number.

There’s a mistake in the map with white spots showing the us military base in the world. There’s no any us military base in HK.

Thanks for this insightful video. It made me realize things I knew, but never consciously thought about. I live in Germany and am fed up with how my government nearly does everything to satisfy our "ally", the US - and a lot of Germans think likewise. Yet, there is no (considerable) public movement (i know of) against US military presence in our country... Albeit we know through reveals by Brandon Bryant that the US uses a German-ground air base to operate drones in the middle east, a topic I believe is widely controversial even among the American population. Left people often say or give the impression that Russia "ain't that bad". They are bad, for sure. But actually... the US seems worse. The US has a Democracy (somewhat), while Russia is definitely an authoritarian state. But given the not so long ago cold war past between the US and Russia and how the US has Russia backed into a corner, I'd consider the US's military presence all over the world a more serious threat to peace then Russia. And don't tell me this presence is necessary because Russia would go wild otherwise. The past only shows that Russia is capable of nearly escalating a conflict if the US does so, too.

+Adam Stovicek In a way yes because the war over the years made the US make bases all over the world to fight evil & we just stay like the video says & of course because of are allies

NO America just think they are world police-man. America'l turned the world upside down. You guy's should stick to oppressing your slaves. Russia's intervened in Syria to save America from another humiliating defeat. Al Qaeda brought America to it's knees, 911. America started to train and arm Al Qaeda in Syria. ISIS, America should be ashamed of themselves. Putin will save you, it's ok. Vote Hillary.
