The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed to operate in near-shore settings. The LCS is capable of supporting maritime security, sea control, and deterrence. Moreover, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a class of Small Surface Combatants armed with capabilities focused on defeating global challenges in the littorals. In addition, LCS is designed to provide joint force access in the littorals. Ships in this class can operate independently or in high-threat environments as part of a networked battle force that includes larger, multi-mission surface combatants.

They hate the Littoral Combat Ships because their failure proves that nobody above the rank of Commodore even knows how to find a littorus, much less combat one.

Another major problem is that the navy isn't qualified to maintain many of the ships systems. Instead private contractors must be flown across the world to perform maintenance duties that on any other ship would be done in house. This is because although the navy owns the ships and paid for the development of the technology the contractors retain the knowledge as their intellectual property. So navy personnel aren't allowed to know how the systems actually work. Also the ships were supposed to require less crew than normal. This also turned out to be false although we paid more upfront for this "feature" . So we paid more for the ships, more for the upkeep and more to man them. All of these problems were obvious from the start and anyone who helped push this program should be arrested as traitors and held accountable. The contractors and the navy personnel robbed the tax payers and they did it on purpose

After spending eight years on an LCS you are partially right about the Navy Sailors and the level of qualification. Most service members have the ability to know and work on every piece of equipment on that ship. But for some unknown reason, the Navy will hire contractors to come work on it. That’s where we tell them we’re all the mistakes are occurring. Overall I agree with what you said.
@charlesvaughan3517
@charlesvaughan3517 Год назад
@B Dub as I understood it the navy owns the ship but not the design knowledge. Like they are treating a hardware system as if it is intellectual property ie you buy a DVD but you can't copy or modify it. The only reason I believed our sailors incapable was vital withheld knowledge not capacity to preform the task. John deere is doing the same to farmers with right to repair bs. What makes this even worse is the navy payed the development cost also. I do believe gov contractors can serve a purpose but to be legally forced to use them? That's basically a blank check until they're decommissioned.

So it sounds like depot level maintenance stepped way into the Navy's component repair and on-board repair functions. Line replaceable units have been a way to keep equipment in service, but I remember (USAF) equipment sitting on the shelf for long periods waiting for the depot to ship the LRU's. Sometimes the depot had budget limits. LRU's and a good number of them should be a basic requirement for any ship, although at some size they are no longer practical at sea. Doesn't sound like that happened for the LCS. Also sounds like a lot of components need more testing in prototype and simulated settings before building the second ship in class. I would be OK if a first in class took decades to work out its bugs. If nothing else, we might get new systems proven that could be useful on otherwise deployable ships.

I did foundation machining on the Independence LCS’s for 4.5 years. Drive trains, engines, gear boxes, thrusters, sea ram, gun mounts….etc. etc. The aluminum is so unstable that when using a surface mounted milling machine it can barely operate without vibration. It came as no surprise to me when cracks started becoming a problem after being used in the open seas. Engineers did not like or want to hear of the consistent machining issues and challenges. It truly a Little Crappy Ship.

No these ships are a BAD idea. You do not build 3500 to 4000 tonne ships and give them >48 knot speed to combat FACs. One builds 50 - 60 yard vessels ( like a Skjold). And one forward deploys them to localities where there are issues with FACs. With SEARAM and a 3" Otomelara cannon they would be reasonably well defended for their size....and attritable. These are nasty ships with 8 SSM or possibly 4 SSM and more smaller missiles like Brimstone/Spear. Ideally you add a smallish drone or 2 that has a laser designator so you can scout FACs further out and designate targets for missiles or guided 3" ammo. That would make sense. Perhaps more feasably you add such drones to all your ships and give them guided cannon ammo. Or add medium drones with something like the Martlett multiuse missile to pick up FACs further from your ships. Or add such missiles to your autocannon RWS that you already have on your combat vessels.... You also do not build 4000 ton speedboats and make 2 out of 3 of their missions be antithetical to high speed and noise in their requirements namely ASW and Mine Clearance. That would be foolish. Those missions do not require you to waste more than twice the motive power needed for the 30 knot > 48+ knots speed jump. If ASW is really a concern one would build more cheaper hulls without the expensive Aluminium hulls that are prone to cracking at high speeds. One also does not build 2 new ship classes with unproven and unique motive power trains without trial ships to work out all the bugs before hand. No : the LCS program is a hodge podge industry and congress boondoggle made to extract maximum moolah from the tax payer.

I never understood the concept in the first place. Our peer threats are Russia and China and these LCS's don't contribute much, if anything, to the deep water fight and would last long in either China's or Russia's littoral coasts. Aluminum burns and melts in a fire aboard ship which makes damage control more difficult. It's a sitting duck for anti-ship missiles. The money would have been better spent in my opinion increasing the survivability of our existing ships, especially the aircraft carriers.

In an antipiracy role they make sense. Especially if said pirates rely on small and fast ships to evade larger ships. The LCS was an ill-conceived idea for a Surface Combatant from the beginning. We have sunk in over $100Billion when construction and current accumulation of Operation & Maintenance investment is considered. That amount of budget would have built us a fleet of very capable multi-warfare frigates in any design. The LCS has become the Case Study in how NOT to build anything. Down-select to a single design never happened, and both were built in disparate locations (different congressional districts in Mississippi and Michigan). Supporting two separate hulls that did not even have engines in the propulsion system in common made them very expensive to train operators and technicians on, and maintain with two separate supply trains. Then when propulsion problems surfaced . . . the solution for one class was NOT the solution for the other class that had a similar problem. The LCS was never able to defend itself well against an attack. For this reason it is not a good vessel for an Independent Steaming mission, and the fleet is so small today that almost everyone has to do this at some point. The LCS was made for Littoral Operations (near the beach) and the fleet needs a Blue Water combat platforms. The ASW package never worked because you had these two volcano-like waterjets pointed right at the very sensitive acoustic sensor under water….(nuts). Repurposing of LCS is happening with operations in the 4th Fleet AOR supporting drug interdiction which they seem to do fine. In addition, the Mine Counter Measures modules will be used on LCS-2 Independence Class. The Oliver Hazard Perry Class FFG-7 Class Guided Missile Frigates were emasculated via the removal of the Mk13 Missile Fire Control System, and then parked EARLY! The Navy had estimated that a New Threat Upgrade Program for OHP FFG-7 would be too expensive so they spent about three times as much on the LCS Program. It turns out those NAVSEA Ivy League Wizards of Smart Aren’t. The Navy has divested itself over the last four decades of Floating Drydocks, and Destroyer Tenders and all the maintenance ratings that used to repair & maintain our Navy. The lack of a demonstration of wisdom in divestment of about half the public shipyards across the country has really come home to roost. The Navy is broke, and we neither have the people or the facilities to repair our fleet, and no amount of construction of shipyards is going to solve THIS PROBELM in under a decade. Another problem is how systems are designed, tested, installed and maintained. The Navy repairs very few things 'BY DESIGN' anymore. It is specified that way in the construction contracts. Smart Idea?! The current leadership and its 4 or 5 previous evolutions of same have not considered what is required to actually fight a war and win. Russia used to be a friend, and China has become the world’s low cost manufacturing center. We make very few things we actually need in our navy in the U.S. anymore. That has to be fixed. If it had not been for the last administration this nation would have lost our ability to make steel and aluminum which is a primary National Security Concern.. An LCS land based test site was never established for testing LCS equipment looking for problems . . . so they were always in the dark about the future and wearing rose colored glasses seeing butterflies and unicorns . . . but not reality. The Blue/Gold crew idea is a Red Herring of a concept for the Surface Fleet. First it came from the sub force and that example is used as the ‘case in point’ as how to fix the problem. Have you ever met our Submariners? Very Special and capable bunch. Every one of them goes through the most rigorous testing, Psychological evaluations, and training that is truly extraordinary and unique. That is why that screening is so TOUGH. Not your average sailor!!! Second, the Navy has an acute manpower problem right now and increasing that equation times two is just a non-starter. Third, our Navy Technicians do so well because they buy into the ownership of THEIR EQUIPMENT . . . and like any true professional they do not want anyone else’s grimy hands on their equipment. This has been the model on almost every strait, hot, fast running, award winning, and first rate crews in the Navy. So if you want to FINALLY totally destroy the Navy . . . just take their equipment ownership away from them. The LCS Program was/is/will continue to be one of the worse examples of 'lack of leadership' and a practical demonstration of malfeasance in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Aluminum hulls have to be taken out of the water once a year to fix pin holes and various other corrosion problems. Ones maintenance budget goes through the roof because of the material used in the construction of their hulls. Also the vessel is out of service for an extended period of time. This channel is taking about severe flaws. I just saw one Independence class just wasting away in Bremerton WA as it was unfit for duty. No Aggis defense is crazy. The bits lost a cruiser in the Falklands due to a lack of the wall of lead the foreign option gets. Its junk. Aluminum hahaha. Your nationalism is blinding you.

The rusian bomber Tu90 could bomb us out of the water. Either submersible city , flying air craft carrier , Poseidon anti submarine plane , floating island can help accomplish navy mission better and earth magnetic field control by the Seabee or corp of engineers are very potent
