I own the plex solo version of this tent (the same except it pitches with one pole instead of two) and it’s worth mentioning this thing is pretty much see through. It’s not the biggest deal but sun and moon light goes straight through this thing and if you’re changing people on the outside can pretty much see everything. You can see what I mean at certain points in this video specifically when they’re filming the pad from the outside of the tent.

Having owned several Dyneema tents and packs, I can say that they very easily get tiny punctures and leak water. Yes the material is strong, but it is not strong when it comes to abrasion and small punctures due to the webbed nature of the material.

FYI, there's no "special savings" with the Flextail Zero Pad w/Pump. The Pad Only is $159.99 (Mummy is $139.99). With Pump, its $212.98 (Mummy $198.98) which is the regular price of the Pump added on - $52.99. So, ignore what the video says.

I'd suggest the offset can be made using a stick you find at your campsite rather than bring that extra pole. Can be hard to find in an alpine setting I guess, where sticks aren't necessarily readily available.

So… What’s the connection between Mier and Z-packs? I have a Mier Lanshan 2, and its is LITERALLY the same tent, except for the fact that this one is dyneema, and some minor variations like the magnetic keepers on the doors ( and the Lanshan 2 is a double wall, this looks like it’s single). If someone wants a much cheaper version of basically the same tent (dyneema is the difference) you can still get the Lanshan 2 for around $159.

Hey Dan, genuine question. Why does no nobody talk about the Slingfin tents? Especially the Portal 2. I’ve seen videos where people put it up and give it a review but there is not a single video of a real test in outdoor conditions. I’d love to see somebody like you (with many years of experience and expertise) to use it and review it on a trip. I think it’s really worth it ! Thank you for your videos and keep being great!

Cause Slingfin is still using nylon flys. Great designs but 10d nylon flys are yesterday’s tent. Too many other non-saggy materials out there being used to spend 550 on a nylon fly tent that is not seam taped. And yes, I own a Slingfin.

I bought a Tarptent Stratospire Li and while i really do like it, i find myself going for my freestanding Mont Moondance more often. Trekking pole tents are so fiddly to get a nice pitch, and its even more tricky when using platforms. Im usually tired enough when i get to camp that messing around getting a nice pitch is not that appealing. The weight saving though is pretty amazing!

It’s hilarious to see the comments complaining about the tent not coming with stakes. Why would you want a company to pick stakes for the tent you purchase??🤔 I own a Zpacks Duplex and purchased Zpacks Sonic stakes at the same time. It’s very strange that people would want someone else to choose their tent stakes for them. 😂😂😂

Dan - would love to see you review the new Zpacks Free Zip 2P Freestanding Tent. There's not a single review of this tent yet on RU-vid. I've been looking for a DCF freestanding tent (not semi-freestanding), and I'm not a fan of the Big Agnes line because of the super thin fabric they used. I'm not in a rush to buy, and will wait for some reviews before spending $900. My biggest concern is that I think they should have gone slightly longer on the interior length dimension (90" instead of 86" would have been ideal). Interested to see how it works for you since you're tallish.
@danielhurst8863
@danielhurst8863 3 месяца назад
Unfortunately, it is not a one and done tent, because those really don't exist. This is a great tent for through hiking, and by that I mean your tent is setup for one night in one location before you move to the next spot. This camp is not suitable for base camping, where we hike in, then setup a tent and might be there a week, while we hike out from that base. No hiking pole tent works well for base camping, because we need those trekking poles during the day. My base camp tent, total in was over $800 (Lite Fighter II with 4 season cover and carrying case), and can withstand almost any storm outside dedicated alpine camping, but it weights 8lbs. That is wholly unsuited for through hiking. No sane through hiker is going to carry an 8lb tent. This tent, at just over a pound, is an amazing through hiking tent. Yes, the cost is crazy expensive, but when you count grams, this saves lbs. That cost money.

Good job Dan, as always. Hope you and your family are doing well. I'm now 71 and feel lightweight equipment is way too expensive. I'm not I'd pay that even if I was 10 years younger. Lord willing, I hope to keep hiking through my 70s (I've been hiking since the early 70s). Probably most of my remaining hiking will be long day hikes, with a few short backpacking trips. But still, $700 + for any backpacking equipment is terrible. I think I'll stick with my REI Quarterdome 2 (older version). Keep up the great work. God Bless!

I use a zpacks plexamid, and it’s still going strong. My only issue is that no matter how I pitch it, unless it’s really low (which much less head room), dirt will blow right in through the mesh. So if I’m at a really dry spot, and the dirt is very fine, I’m waking up to either a very sandy morning, or if I pitch it low enough where I have way less head room, I’m going to be wet from the condensation. Somehow, I still chose the plexamid over my gossamer gear “the 2” and the big Agnes Bikepack fly creek UL2.

Loved this video Dan! I purchased the Off-set Solo a few days after they were released in November 23' As others have said the 3 piece carbon pole is not needed. I purchased a 5/16x12" carbon tube from Amazon and it works flawlessly with the fabric cup, and gives all the foot room that's needed. Most times finding a stick in the wilderness isn't as easy as some might think. I have 100's miles with the Off-Set Solo and love it. I also own the Duplex Zip and my new favorite the (11.7 oz) Plex Solo Lite. Lastly condensation can be controlled by pitching the tent under trees and vegetation and away from water sources.

@ChristyHikes
@ChristyHikes 3 месяца назад
@@wolfeadventures You can pitch the shelter an inch higher or lower than the suggested 48". The idea is to have the tent "float" slightly off the ground. That allows the bathtub floor to be at 8 inches. In Bad weather you can decrease the length of the 4 corner guy lines to lower the shelter to avoid backsplash. I've had little to no condensation leaving both doors open.

Is this a similar situation to Gore-Tex (before the patent, which shouldn't have been granted in the first place, expired) in which the manufacturer not only controls the product, but requires that makers use the manufacturer's licensed sewing machines, seam tape, etc., all of which drives up price for the consumer?

Well. The 3FULgear Lanshan 1 Pro comes in a bit under 2 lbs (30 ounces) with lighter stakes, silnylon, incredibly easy to set up and keeps you dry in the rain. I think it was $150 ish? The Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL1 Dye I have comes in just under 2 lbs with lighter stakes, $180 used. So..... So we’d save how much save about a pound for $500 more dollars? Also, don't forget Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. Tons of room. Have tried and liked all of these. I guess I sit and wonder when hiking became this boutique, bourgeoisie competition for the lightest tent? Doesn't this take a little fun out of it? I teach guitar full time and I see most students spending HOURS and HOURS in guitar gear video reviews, hours and days! Comparing different kinds of spruce guitar tops; ..... bone nuts vs tusq nuts....come on. Get a nice guitar and play! I mean...not even Eddie Van Halen cared that much about those piddly details! Sad to see this mentality ruling something as simple as getting out in nature.

Dyneema Tents are overated. They are a no go to me specially on Winter Storms, expesive, not as durable as stated (yes thin Dyneema is not harder than steal or Kevlar), they are condesation hell on misty and wet weather.

The thing about Dyneema is that it's not especially strong when it comes to tent weight material, just strong enough to be viable at lower material weights than nylon or polyester and even that is only for the inner walls and fly. The stuff is so prone to puncturing and abrasion damage, however, that it's a bad choice for floors because to make it viable you'd have to use a weight of it that's not lighter than traditional woven materials, only more expensive. It's also prone to permanent deformation and tearing when pulled at angles to the fibers. It does not like that at all. A lot of people don't understand these things about Dyneema and think products made with it are nigh indestructible, which they can be when we're talking about sail material or ropes and slings. When it comes to tents, it's actually rather fragile and finicky. I even saw one guy say he didn't need a ground sheet because his tent had a Dyneema floor that was stronger than any ground sheet, wholly ignorant of the fact that because his tent had a Dyneema floor he needed a ground sheet more than anyone else. There was also a video from a prominent RU-vidr showing a trick to guying out a Dyneema tent to get more wall space and Dan Durston himself appeared in the comments telling people not to do that because it would eventually permanently deform the material if not rip it apart. It does have other advantages, though. It's naturally and highly waterproof so it requires no added weight to make it so, maintains it's as-new waterproof rating better than a traditional treated fabric and, unlike nylon, it's tear strength doesn't drop to nothing when it gets wet. Still, it's not all it's cracked up to be and is more a designer material than anything else. An actually worthwhile and practical material upgrade that doesn't cost a fortune is lightweight/high thread count polyester. This is very good material, way better than nylon, and it's popping up more and more across the entire budget board. Everybody from TarpTent to Naturehike is using the stuff with great success.

I don't want any tent that requires a Paiute dead fall pitched with it.

It today’s market at the inflated cost of everything… 750$ is not expensive, it’s par for the course.

well when idiots keep buying 400 dollar coolers that cost $40 bucks to make, we end up with $700 tents that cost $70 to make

Wow! Expensive and fiddly as hell. This looks like it would be a giant PITA in real world use. Not worth $750 I my opinion.
