This year’s LEGO Winter Village set revisits the concept of a post office through a fantasy lens, and the result is a solid slice of festive fun - if not quite an outright Christmas miracle.
The LEGO Group has already rolled out a Winter Village post office in the aptly-named 10222 Winter Village Post Office, one of the very first sets in the long-running LEGO Icons (once LEGO Creator Expert) subtheme. 10339 Santa’s Post Office serves up something less rooted in reality and more in line with the fantastical 10275 Elf Club House, 10267 Gingerbread House and 10245 Santa’s Workshop, and for those on board with this style of Winter Village set, it’s the sort of thing that makes you wish it could be Christmas every day.
We say ‘for those on board’ because a clear split in the style of Winter Village sets has emerged over the past few years, and with it a split in audience. On one hand you’ve got the more grounded sets like 10293 Santa’s Visit, 10308 Holiday Main Street and 10325 Alpine Lodge, and on the other you’ve got more whimsical models like 10245 Santa’s Workshop, 10267 Gingerbread House, 10275 Elf Club House and now 10339 Santa’s Post Office. Not everyone is going to enjoy both sides of that Christmas coin - but this set very much feels like the LEGO Group trying to bridge the gap and reach the middle ground between those two approaches.
While at first glance 10339 Santa’s Post Office seems like a clear-cut fantasy set, much of the model (beyond its characters) could easily be repurposed as a general Winter Village post office, and one that’s leagues ahead of its 2011 predecessor. This is an attractive and accomplished building (sand blue and nougat make for pleasant bedfellows) with plenty of details inside and out, from the log fire, writing desk and coffee machine to the icicles, bows and brick-built bugle. None of these icons really feel specific to Santa and the elves, so you could always sub in regular minifigures if that’s more your style. Even the hot air balloon is just a fun way to get around and deliver mail.
But still: none of this is to say that it doesn’t fit the fanciful nature of the Gingerbread House, Santa’s Workshop and so on. The candy cane posts outside the main doors, bright colours used for the sorting chutes (more on those later) and the toboggan keep the needle firmly pointed towards whimsy (if you so desire), as does the pond from which one of the elves is apparently fishing out lost letters with the help of a cute baby seal, and the other elf guiding the hot air balloon into place with a pair of trans-red marshalling wands. The Winter Village sets are getting better and better at these storytelling moments, and 10339 Santa’s Post Office is packed with them.

In the US the post office has always been extremely averse to any kind of media exposure. As in, it's not allowed ever. It's a big headache to work around it for movies, and games and toys also have to go to pretty great lengths to not use any markings that look the same, etc. That's def why it's the case for the US. (I work in film/video, this has always been a problem even for small productions, can't even show anything in a background, no interviews, nothing is allowed.)

Thats insane, cause theres this bad Christmas movie all about the post office. Im in film too, how did you find out the post office is so averse to stuff like this?

@@bostongeis5123 My partners' parents worked for the post office for like 50 years and everyone they knew too, and also film stuff I've worked on it's always a non-starter. Productions just have to work around it, so it's usually not worth trying unless you really have to. Mail is federally protected, just opening someone else's mail is an actionable federal offense technically. At minimum you can't shoot inside facilities. It's just a federal government thing, there's a lot of protected private material inside post offices; part of the building is a public space and the rest is government property that's carefully protected for privacy and safety reasons. I'm sure there are ways, they're just not loose about it. So anyone who is even a little apprehensive about liabilities (companies like Lego, Nintendo, etc) just stay away from it to avoid problems. But sure, if someone's really determined I'm sure it's possible, just probably need to build sets or use a facility that's completely empty. I looked up that movie, wow, looks really bad and I presume that's what they did.

@@bostongeis5123 My parents and everyone they're friends with worked for the post office for many decades and they've mentioned it before, that it's just very hard, higher ups rarely give permission for anything. I'm sure it's possible. Also it's just always been a non-starter on any film I"ve worked on, since you can't film inside real locations (have to build sets or use empty facilities like that movie probably did, I looked it up, wow it looks terrible). There's a lot of private material inside post office buildings and technically it's a federal offense to even open anyone else's mail, even though it seems like not a big deal. So I suppose the liability in many ways just isn't worth it. So sure, it's probably possible but just often not worth it for anyone not wanting to spend a fortune. It's like the birthday song. Until a few years a ago it was under copyright and costed a ridiculous amount to use it in any movie, so almost every movie (until recently) in a birthday scene they don't sing the song, or they sing something really weird, and you'll be like "wtf is that?! That's not the birthday song!". That one was always a funny workaround working in film, it's finally public domain now.

I think the US does have some quaint post offices like in small towns. Generally I only go when I need to send a package or once every two years when I need stamps. But I would like a Lego post office. Would prefer the cozy type to a modern take but it would be nice to have like a little conveyor belt sorting system, a little truck, etc.

It's too much of just a facade. I also don't like how it's the same color as the winter village santa's visit we got a few years back. I feel like for this type of building it would probably be better if it was made out of stone or something. Maybe they could've used all the new rounded tiles to do that sort of details. I don't know, for some reason the color just doesn't fit and the building looks boring. I much prefer the original winter village post office which was more classy. Of course this is trying to be more like a santa's workshop type of set but nothing about this gets me particularly excited.

Post Offices, in the US, are a dying out. I've needed to goto the Post Office maybe once in a couple years, to renew my passport. I have had to use, maybe, 1 stamp to mail something, from a book of 'forever stamps' I bought when they first came out and still have stamps to use. In terms of mail, it is mostly junk mail, with the rare important item since everything is online. We have UPS and Amazon deliver everything.

The majority of everyday business post offices get nowadays likely consist of people who have PO boxes. People may use PO boxes in lieu of or in addition to regular residential mailboxes/postboxes because they live at an address without one, may want or need more discreet mail service, etc.

Post offices are a thing of the past, at least in Denmark where Lego is placed. Im Danish and we dont have post offices anymore, its all been assimilated with kiosks and others parcel dealing places. So I have a feeling they are no longer on Legos Radar unless it is romanticized old school sets like this.

as someone who has all the winter village sets, this looks quite strange. the set looks unfinished, or there was a disagreement over it's final appearance/colour palette maybe. looking at the central section in particular, are there supposed to be windows or just holes in the façade? I do like some elements here but it's either been rushed in it's development, was a backup idea or a new designer for the series. it just looks like it needs more work. nice balloon though!

The post office differences aren't necessarily based on the country. I'm in the US and my local post office looks similar to the "neoclassical" ideas submission. Lego Friends had a gift delivery set which I guess isn't technically a post office but it had similar elements. Not sure how I feel about the new winter set, but it's cute. It's the balloon, it just feels like it's adding onto the price and that could've been put towards a bigger building.

I wonder how much British Post Office nostalgia comes from Postman Pat. The idea of a friendly man driving around rural England delivering gifts to people definitely appealed to my child brain back in the '80s.

This is a fantastic video, and you ask really interesting questions. As an American, married to an Englishman, and living in Abu Dhabi, my view of post offices covers the range of options. But for a winter village set, I'm happy for this nostalgic, whimsical version. But like you, I'm sorry to see the great detailing of the Winter Village sets decreasing over the past few years. I agree with you that Santa's Visit was probably the last really well-detailed set. Thanks again for a terrific video.

Denmark is one of (of not the) most digitalized nations in the world. Snail mail has mostly been left in the past. I get that from a British point of view, all the best things are in the past (wich explains a lot of eg Brexit), but for the Danes, the past represents recession, poverty, isolationism and loss. One would think that Lego would be more internationalistic in their decision-making by now, but it would seem not...🤷‍♂️
@Libertaro-i2u

Well, Denmark's sad view of the past certainly hasn't filtered into LEGO sets as they have entire themes based on various places and eras throughout history!

This set looks so awesome!🤩 The way I have my winter village set up, the grounded sets are at the bottom, including the Home Alone House and Chinese New Year Ice Rink, and the whimsical sets are placed on a higher platform, with Santa and his Magical companions being a bit seperate but still able to overlook the “regular” winter village 🤩
@alexandravieira68

I get your point about the whimsy but this one doesnt do it for me, i dont know why, it just looks just another building with a Santa in it. Doesn't even look like a post office, like you said, it's a sorting place. Also, the snow on the roof looks a bit chunky to me. I guess I prefer more secular buildings, more winter village than santa's village. On the point of where are the post offices, yes lego, where are the post offices???
@BrotherhoodWorkshop

To answer your question, in America post offices are not "fun". They are very spartan governmental buildings with grumpy employees and no aesthetic appeal. I have never walked into a post office and thought "gee, I love this place so much, I wish I could have a little LEGO version on my desk." The only way in which I could find a post office appealing is if there were elves or owls working there. Maybe in the UK your post offices are nicer?
@Libertaro-i2u
@Libertaro-i2u 5 дней назад
British post offices, at least those in the old towns and villages are better architecturally. The Expert Modular line would be the most logical line of Lego sets to have a post office set as Lego Modular focuses on representing mundane urban life, albeit an idealized version of 19th and early 20th century urban living. Agreed, post offices are generally not fun places to be, which could explain why Lego has by-and-large shied away from those buildings, it's also likely the reason there aren't many Lego office sets, at least not modern offices. Also, many Lego fans who build towns out of Lego pieces build these towns as quasi eutopias, which buildings like modern post offices don't fit the theme of.

3:23 I think very similarly, but instead of another street, it actually is the North Pole. I really like to imagine a winter village setup where you have the ‘real world’ sets in one part of the room, and then the North Pole sets in another. And in magical fashion, the connection between the two is the train. That’s what i’d do, including a railway post office car myself.
