Makes sense for the character through. He’s taller than Mario and jumps higher If he wasn’t naturally timid, he should otherwise have as much of more confidence than Mario going into fights, but he always plays second. A retcon, but a sensible one imo.
It would not work well having Mario as the face for the franchise being brave and also having Luigi trying to match that, I'm sure they had no plans to even make Luigi they just needed a colour swap to identify the second player in super mario bros, probably came up with the name on the spot because it made sense for them to be brothers since they just wanted to change the colour.. DokiDoki Mario 2 by chance made him an important character and they sure struck gold since it helped to make it a franchise. Like imagine they drop Luigi after the two Japanese games it's wild to me how important the American Mario 2 was because it cemented that the franchise would sell in America, probably the most important video game for Nintendo because they have continued the character designs for Peach Luigi and Toad in all games based off a re-skin.
Nah, Luigi had already had the shy/timid personality as far back as the old Mario cartoons and comics. I remember even in the Super Mario Super Show, Luigi was generally the cowardly one while Mario was the hero. Though I suppose you can argue that Martinet was the one who made that personality canon.
So Charles did more than just voice them, he basically invented much of their personalities. He should def go down in history as a major player in video game history.
Sad thing is we've already had a personality for Luigi going back to the late 1980s with the initial cartoon show that had a live action portion which further expanded on luigi`s personality in 1990 with Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon show. So charles coming up with his weird horrible sounding Mario and Luigi voices in Late 1996 was an abortion of the franchise for those of us that grew up with hearing Mario and Luigi from 1989 - 1990 with 91 episodes being produced between the two shows.
@@Milner62 i highly doubt the low quality cash grab 90s cartoons made charles martinet's voice an "abortion to the franchise" 😐 like, they are charming cartoons, but get real
@@sswweeeett, to make Mario and his brother have a high pitched feminine voice is an abortion to the character when we had an actual Brooklyn born Italian that voiced Mario.
I met Charles once. He was a very kind and fun guy. He even voiced as Mario and call my wife "Super Princess Yoko." It made us really happy seeing as he really helped make my childhood great.
Charles Martinet: "On second thought, a Brooklyn accent might scare the kids." The _Super Mario Bros Super Show:_ *gives Mario and Luigi Brooklyn accents anyway*
I love that Luigi's voice is deeper and more reserved in Mario Golf since it's a golf game and his adrenaline would be the opposite of when racing. It makes perfect sense lol.
I'm so glad Charles added the humming and whistling parts, it gave Luigi SO much character and it's one of the reasons I loved that game so much. I still find myself humming the tune every now and then
actually no. Like he says, as many times as he’s told the story, he was the last one to audition, and the people told him to go until they ran out of tape. Which he did.
I met Charles before. The most sweetest guy I’ve met. He was so much fun to see. His manager on the other hand was something else. Me and a friend told charles “thank you for making our childhood” he said on Mario’s voice “thank you for playing my games” Manager shut that down so fast because she was trying to get people to pay to talk to him. He was depressed. You could see it. He was there just to meet fans.
Charles is a gift to the gaming world There is a sinking feeling when you hear the drop in pitch 2 decades later. Not because it is scarier, not because it is a change in Luigi's character, but Chales himself. He can only give to the world for so long.
yeah, as soon as I got to that part of the video I paused and had a mini rant (to no one in particular, since I'm alone in my room) "wtf are you on, Koji - wait, Kondo? Which is the family name and which is the birth name? - what are you on, dude? That's a *perfect* Toad voice."
Except it likely wasn't, because Toad would've had to have a better pre-established reputation than Luigi for that sentence (which is two, by the way) to be possible in the first place, so it must've been uttered several times before that instance.
@@brundle_fly_3895 Unless you take a moment to consider the reputations that Toad and Luigi would've had to have at the time for that sentence to be possible.
9:30 I want THAT game. "Luigi's Mafia" "You come to me, on-a the day of Toadette's wedding... and-a you say 'Luigi, I want you to kill for coins' and yet I can not remember the last time you invited me over for-a mushrooms, eh?"
Well, as the person in the video said, he was originally going to audition for Toad. But the stubbornness of good oldd Koji Led to him being the voice of Luigi for the first two Mario party games. which is stupid. Sorry Koji, but I’m on Julian’s side. He definitely sounds more like Toad. Well… Not the modern day Toad, but the voice they used back then. He sounds identical to that Toad. You make a better composer, then a voice Director.
Mario: " Luigi! We have guests!" Luigi: "WOULD YOU JUST SHUT UP ALREADY!? THIS IS THE 147TH TIME I'VE HAD TO TELL YOU THAT I'M MAKING SPAGHETTI IN THE KITCHEN!!!"
@@glitchingnumber I mean..there's the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie too. Also a TV animated/live action series. I don't think the movies really count since he's a game character.
Worth noting is that Luigi's voice in Melee (which was in development the same time as Luigi's Mansion) is just Mario's voice from SM64 pitched up. It sounds pretty similar to Julien's version of Luigi actually
I kinda dig how deep and suave Luigi sounded in Mario Kart 64 and Tennis 64. Luigi's smug "Luigi not afraid" line to Waluigi from Tennis 64's intro is such a stark contrast to how he's been portrayed from Luigi's Mansion 1 onward.
When i think about it if kondo wasn't so stubborn with giving toad's voice to Julien , then maybe he would still be his voice today. Which would definitly make me pretty proud to have a fellow french as one of mario's main character voice
@@SB-pt7dy Well Charles Martinet is of French descent and speaks fluent French so basically you have a fellow frecnh voicing 4 mario's main character voice
I am surprised by the situation with Wario's voice. Despite the fact that he was always voiced by Charles Martinet, the voice for some reason is different in almost every game. In some games, Wario has a high voice, and in others, a low voice. I wonder why?
THE FACT THAT I DIDNT EVEN NOTICED THAT HIS VOICE GOT DEEPER 😭😭 WHEN I WAS YOUNG I WOULD HEAR HIS VOICE ALL PITCHY BUT WHEN I GREW OLDER IT FELT LIKE I WAS GROWING UP WITH HIM AS WELL THAT I DIDNT NOTICED THE CHANGE
Also fun fact that Thomas didn't touch on. In both Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, Luigi does not use Julien Bardakoff as the voice actor, nor did Charles Martinet record new lines for Luigi. Instead, in both games, Luigi uses Mario's voice lines from Mario 64, but pitched up quite a bit. EDIT: And as someone else mentioned in the replies: Julien Bardakoff (and all the Japanese Mario Kart 64 lines), were reused for Mario Kart Super Circuit
I know I came after the party, but funnily enough Julien Bardakoff still works as a translator but for Ubisoft, and worked on the translation of Mario + Rabbids : Spark of Hope (which is even funnier because Rabbids are a French licence as much as Rayman)
I NEED this for Yoshi- the evolution of his voice/sound design is super bizarre to me, and going back to games like Mario kart 64 are suuuuper jarring now
In a way I really like how luigi's voice has been pitched down through time. Makes him feel like he matured through the luigi's mansion games. Idk if i am making sense lol
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Super Smash Bros. Melee was a weird hybrid of the two voices. I believe the game used Charles' Mario voice clips but pitched them up to match Julian's portrayal. A weird relic of this 2 Luigi voices era.
I'd love to see Donkey Kong's voice. He's changed quite a lot, and I find it funny he now is voiced by the man who voiced Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time.
That's definitely a good video suggestion; he goes from wild screeches in the 64 era to his current grunts and sounds to the more realistic gorilla noises they use for Smash.
he's too old and not an actual game history buff to know the ONE time someone else had recorded Luigi's voice at the time Mario Kart 64 was being developed at the same time as Super Mario 64 was. and Nintendo didn't "decide" between Julien and Charles based just on "whatever they felt like" like the video says, they've always reused voice recordings whenever it's convenient for development time/budget constraints and that was the case for Mario Party 1 and 2 (and MK Super Circuit as well, no mention in the video of the characters' voices being recycled specifically from the Japanese version of MK64, with some clips that were probably from the same recording session that went unused for the N64 game).
I find the slightly deeper voice in Mansion 3 to be quite cinematic, it’s like Charles was getting more in tune with the character over time (the first game IMO sounds like exaggeration of the voice to lend to how scared Luigi is)
It’s funny because the Mario movie from the 80s is two Italian dudes from Brooklyn with the accent and everything. It’s a really bad movie but low key so bad it’s entertaining.
@@clownfish92 I went to see it when it came out and I was pretty confused/annoyed at how the goombas etc were just big guys in suits, Yoshi was like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park. I wanted something more cartooney.
I miss the old toad voice. The one that would scream when I bumped him in Mario kart. And the one that sounded happy in Mario party one. Now he sounds like he smoked too many cigarettes
I’ve totally heard and grown up with both voices. Strange hearing both voices because they were both so familiar it made me realize, well damn, there were really in fact two voices…
That really does suck that he didn't get to voice Toad. I'm not sure why they didn't leave the desicion up to him I mean he literally wanted to voice Toad and not Luigi. Makes me kinda feel bad for Julien because he basically flew all the way to Japan just to be denied of that opportunity which would honestly piss me off if I were him. But what really bothers me is the fact that Koji Kondo himself said his voice was more suitable for Luigi. Ummmm... Idk about you but an Italian plumber from Brooklyn wouldn't ever sound like that in real life so I'm not sure how they thought this was a good idea.
There was a good while when Martinet would seemingly alternate from game to game whether to differentiate Luigi by making him high-pitched or low-pitched. The Mario and Luigi series does the former ("Go Weegee!") while his grunts in Super Paper Mario are pretty deep. But I guess nowadays it's not pitch at all that distinguishes him, it's the "wobble" to the voice.
Julien may have never wanted to voice luigi, but if he didn't, we wouldn't have these memorable voice clips of him, and those voice clips are these 7:08
