I think for 50$ I can put the mower on its side and drain it!
@kenjett2434
@kenjett2434 Год назад
I disagree as I have a $500 Honda used one season flipped it to change oil and now the valves is stuck and no compression. This model isn't just tip on side to drain you have to turn it completely upside down. So have reached the conclusion that most mowers and riding mowers are all junk these days.

My biggest gripe is that all the oil does not drain out when the mower is flipped on its side. I do not like mixing fresh clean oil with what's left of however many previous years oil in the sump. My current walk behind is a Murray with a B&S engine. supposed to hold 15 oz of oil, and it did when new; but when I fill it after draining, it only takes 12 oz to fill it.

Warm engine before emptying, makes the oil come out better as it thins the oil.😊
@kurtknispel9170
@kurtknispel9170 Год назад
Yeah. How does that work. 10w30 means it's 10w cold and 30w hot. So shouldn't it be thicker warm? 🤔 and I always change my oil hot too just wonder why it's thinner when it's advertised to get thicker
@rickthelian2215
@rickthelian2215 Год назад
@@kurtknispel9170 in Australia we just use SAE30, except for Honda’s.we do use 10-30w, well the 10 is for colder weather zones the 30w is for normal weather conditions. The higher the w the thicker the viscosity of the oil is so in cold weather you want it at a thinner viscosity but when you pour it out of the bottle all oils are thicker at room temperature than at a hot temperature.

Great video April and Steve, maybe not regarding lawnmowers, but the sump plug as we call them, is actually beneficial where a lot of agricultural machines tractors etc have a magnet on the plug so any filings etc will stick to it and not damage the engine/transmission etc. 👍🏻
@tjclarke4604
@tjclarke4604 Год назад
I actually have another answer for this. What was happening a lot back in the day, was the customer would do their own oil change, then when putting the drain plug back in, would over tighten it and crack the oil pan (steel tapered plug) or bust it off (plastic Tecumseh plug). Also, people would often lose the nylon gasket then wonder why it leaked. It was a massive problem for years. And yes, you are right, us mechanics don't even use the damn plug.

You said it right! It's a perfect time to pop off the blade and sharpen it. I've serviced a lot of mowers for others as well and same thing, just tip it over. Also, I change my oil at least a couple times a year and our mowing season is pretty short here in Northern Ontario, Canada. With no filter to take out the metal filings from normal wear and tear it's the only way to get rid of them. As usual, thanks for the video!

I never flipped a push mower over to change the blade. I tipped it to the handle, pulled the blade, loosened the drain plug, tipped back down on to pan, tipped back up, put in plug, replaced blade, tipped back down, filled with oil, done. Takes minutes and you don't have to worry about the other liquid in the mower, the gas.

I have a Toro GTS self-propelled mover from 1986. I use it as a trim mower, so it's use is not too heavy. But for a 37 year old mower, it starts with one or two pulls. It has a drain tube out the bottom side of the engine so you don't have to lift or turn it over, you just have to have U shaped flow director under the spout or be quick to attach a plastic tube when you take the plug off.

The problem I've encountered with machines that DO HAVE A DRAIN PLUG ie. lawn tractors, snow blowers and some older MTD mowers is the OIL MESS deposited on the machine/ground when the plug is removed. Often difficult to get a suitable recepticatle underneath to catch the old flowing oil. The paper towels do make a good firestarter though. "UP IN SMOKE".

Tipping it sometimes you get a fuel leak...easier with the gun and they don't cost much and you can use it for a whole lot of other things.

Thanks for the video - agree that tipping the machine over is much easier than groping round in the caked on grass cuttings under the deck searching for a plug. A related question - is it worth changing the oil at all (with modern oils, engine design, relatively cheap cost to buy a whole new machine etc. etc.), particularly if you have a smallish lawn and only need to cut it a few times a year. My last mower died when one of the wheels broke away from the chassis (metal fatigue) after approx. 10 years - so is engine wear of significance any more. (I knew someone at work who never changed his oil, and it was never an issue with him).

Coincidentally, I just changed the oil in my Husqvarna AWD mower, powered by Honda, and, as mentioned, it does not have a drain plug. I find it to be messier to have to tip the machine over to get the oil to drain out, and I don't think the oil evacuates as well. When filling the crankcase back up, it took only about 2/3 the advertised oil capacity.

Actually Steve & April, I miss the old drain plugs…. I used to remove the spark plug and air filter, then run my old mower every Spring over the inspection pit in my garage, take the blade off for sharpening, open the plug and drain the oil in to a drain tray overnight. Next day it was only a matter of replacing the plug and reattaching the sharpened blade. In with the oil, plug and air filter and off you go for another year! Now my new mower doesn’t have one and I hate flipping it over to drain it. I’ve gotten around it by using the oil vacuum pump to remove the oil so no flipping anymore!😊

My Craftsman riding mower (Briggs and Stratton engine) does not have a drain plug but it does have a push valve to drain the oil.

The thing about drain plugs (especially magnetic drain plugs) is that you're going to get ALL the oil out, including that all-important metal debris. Tipping is never going to get that last bit of oil, which is also the dirtiest.

The last walk-behind I bought said in the manual: Don't change oil. Just add more as necessary. That's the way I did it on a 1960 Chevy pickup I bought used in 1958, the one that created my rule: Never buy a vehicle that has an STP decal on it, but that's another story. Bought re-refined (stick and stones removed) oil for 10 cents a quart and kept a 5-gallon can of it in the truck. When the red light came on, I poured in more oil and kept on truckin'. But I digress...

My Honda HR215 has the drain plug on the side. I do tilt it to get the last drops out. There is a small hole on the deck that the oil runs through to my repurposed bake pan.

Steve you forgot to tell the people who have walk behind push mowers which side to flip the mower over. If flipped over on the filter side instead of the muffler side you'll soak the the air cleaner filter. Just my 2 cents worth. Keep the vids coming to Pittsburgh Pa. I always learn different things from them. God bless 🙏 you and yours. Have a cold beer on me,😆

Rumour has it, Audi and BMW don’t have drain plugs, they use the siphon tower you referenced. I bought one and I use it for my push mower, my Quad, and my tractor, especially the hydraulics and axle fluid changes.

Some countries including the Netherlands banned the sale of cars with sump plugs, to stop people dumping waste oil irresponsibly. Manufacturers try to make their products to suit all countries as much as they can. So what is banned in say California, can become the norm.

Anything can be a piece of junk if it's not maintained or if it can't be maintained. But if there's a boss (thicker & flat area of metal) on the bottom of the oil sump, what I would is, remove the sump, and drill & tap 3/8 NPT threads in the boss & install a magnetic oil drain plug.

Need to change the oil in an inherited Honda generator that was originally purchased in 2021. The oil I have on my shelf is Pennzoil with a date of 16feb21. Is this oil too old to bother using it for a change? Thanks Steve!

It's amazing , to me, that there are apparently so many people who think that chaning lawn mower oil is an inconvenience. I usually accomplish the task in less thamn 15 min. including cleanup. P.S. Love my Ferris mower with Vanguard motor that has "Oil Guard" system. Super easy to drain and fill, with the cartridge filter.

Idk. I have a pressure washer that has no drain, and the manufacturer says it never needs to be changed, just topped off. What they don’t tell you is that the engine is probably only supposed to last 100 hours and fail so you have to buy a new one. I only bought this thing because it was 80% off at a box store.

I think it's because most people don't change the oil....let alone check it....on their push lawn mowers. Most of the new ones are sold with "Never Change the Oil, Check Only" as a gimmick anyways.

Actually most of the push mowers I deal with do actually have the drain plugs on the bottom and it is actually a lot smarter to use the drain plug to drain the oil because you actually get all the old oil out as well as any dirt or debris that be in the engine because on most push mower engines where the dipstick goes in the engine there is usually a like a extra lip or something like a baffle and it doesn't let everything come out of the engine
@campbellpaul
@campbellpaul Год назад
I agree! I find draining from the bottom can sometimes more convenient, as well. If you find an old mower with sludge or particles (or both) in the sump, it is a breeze to simply remove the dip stick tube and shoot WD40 through it, with the plug off, getting all that bad stuff out.
@billyjackson5799
@billyjackson5799 Год назад
@@campbellpaul yep that's why stick using the drain plug because someone had gave really nice push mower one time and I decided to change the oil in it because it had been setting for while and tried the method of draining oil out the dipstick and filled it fresh oil fired it up let it run for few minutes then it made rattling noise then locked up I took apart and found that there was like a mixture of dirt some really fine sand like substance that built up in from where it had been setting and none of had came out with the old oil where I had drained it out the dipstick

We bought an MTD rider, never once did I think 'oh, I should check to see where the oil plug is'. Well, I should have because it doesn't have one. So I bought a battery operator extractor only to find that the head where the impeller is on the extractor doesn't fit into the oil neck. I can see it on walk behind mowers but riders? No, that is crap lol. I do have a question though, when you extract opposed to draining, can you get all the old oil out?

On some self propelled walk behinds the running gear made it so you couldn’t get to the drain plug.

I always believed, the manufactures figured out most people, didn't change the oil anyways, so lets eliminate that (example) .03 cent part. If they make (example) 1 million engines a yr, they pocket $30,000, on that one part.
