Some of New York's streets and blocks are named after cities and streets here in The Netherlands. For example: Brooklyn->Breukelen, Harlem->Haarlem, Wallstreet->Walstraat, Broadway->Brede wegh, Long Island -> Lange Eylandt. To mention just a few. If you go deeper in the history, you even find Dutch villages and cities, who are still named in Dutch. Like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Holland ( in michigan ), kinderhoek, Nassau, Barneveld. If you think about it...your very big and our very little countries are more a-like then we think. Like its a brother and sister relationship, lol. Thats why Dutch people loves Americans and vice versa ( well i do ). The history lets us known, that the world is a lot smaller than we think it is.

The Pilgrims had left England, fleeing for religious persecution. They found refuge in the Netherlands. But there they got another problem. The very (relative!) tolerance that allowed them to thrive in the Netherlands scared them. They were puritans and were afraid their children would be influenced by all the temptations of this young multicultural nation. That’s why they left for America (as if those temptations wouldn’t be there too)
@maxschaffels2164
@maxschaffels2164 Год назад
Excellent comment, so true. Stephen Fry put it (albeit humourously) very well: "The Pilgrims didn't flee persecution, they fled so they could persecute." Harsh, but doesn't ring untrue keeping the Salem Witch Trials and other such mass persecutions in American history in mind!

And of course it's sad that our country gets lots of people from all over the world that hates our history and want to destroy it, like sculptures of slave traders. If course its dark, but it's also history it's not like if we destroy our history its gonna go back and time and dont do it, it already happend it's a shame that people see us as bad even tho it was normal back then, even the bible states that you can sell your daughter as a slave, I think it's disgusting but that doesnt mean we have to destroy the bible.

This one I saw already but nice to see it a second time with some reactions to it. We Dutch were no big colonizers, we are traders. English is due to our digital world more and more the world language. In The Netherlands (and you be amazed) from the beginning of the 19th-century students learned German, French, and English in school, after a while they could drop 1 or 2 languages and English has always been the most chosen language to learn. If you look today I am very happy we speak so many languages as Dutch, 90% speak English, maybe not that good but we understand it very well, Me myself and I speaks better German than English because I lived 10 years in this beautiful country with even more beautiful people but I can not write German only a little. English was the language I learned in school. Consider that in The Netherlands 94% understand and speak a second language, 75% understand and speak a third, and 35% a fourth language. THAT MAKES US GOOD TRADERS and so we do business all over the world. Anyone interested in buying something from me, anything in and around kitchens I can sell you and all is made in Germany....:):) Even the kitchens I sell are from Germany, quality rules!

The $24 price for 'Manahata' is a, minor important, error by American historians. It was 60 guilders according to a historical Dutch document. @DenUitvreter

60 guilders in goods it was, that was quite a few axe-heads and pots and pans which where quite usefull to the natives who didn't have metal. I believe it's a bit condescending to the native Americans who ran a pretty civilized society and understood trade very well to make it look a steal.

THeir is a famous poem that tells exactly how english and british operate , they wave any negative as a succes. Is been happening for centuries. Below the poem that sums up british mentality Two fight - and for their lives The one that caused the row is beaten - but survives And boasts: "I've won it now! As master of the field!" And did he win? For sure! Face-down he couldn't yield: His victory was pure The other took his hat, his rapier and his gold And left him lying flat, The glorious field to hold So master he has been: Our Neighbours are the same: If thus they like to win, we wish them lasting fame

Everything is guided by a purpose here we don't do shit just to do it or have brag rights, if it's not useful then what's your big deal about it? Real life example, love to tell this anecdote :') This guy in a porsche came up to the LIDL (kind of an offbrand cheap ass grocery storechain from Germany) and acting all flamboyant and cocky around it so these girls came up giggling like ohhh damn is that your car? So he's peacocking around like hell yea it is, to which the girls replied: Too bad you gotta shop at LIDL now though :') :') I fucking died but yea that's Dutch people for you, very dry and to the point, not big fans of reaching for more credit than we owe or are owed.

Yeah, that is something I missed in the video, it was taken back in the 3rd Anglo-Dutch War, but the Dutch gave it back in the peace treaty knowing it would start another war between the UK and the Dutch Republic if they kept it and the Dutch have many letters and documents predicting a North American nation was going to happen. That is why New Amsterdam was the first city in the New World with full Old World city rights. Especially interesting are the letters from Adriaan van der Donck to the Dutch Government who pretty much already predicted the USA becoming a world power.

Suriname, if run well, has all the resources to become the 4th richest country on earth. Back then we were unaware what North America was going to bring. It's riches were discovered mostly in the 19th and 20th century when they found oil, gold and other resources, but back in the 17th century, growing crops was all you could do there. And we didn't even have the good land like Virginia or Carolina where you could grow tobacco, cotton or sugar. So yeah, giving up New Amsterdam for Suriname was a good move back then

They were rightly thinking that Suriname was a very profitable sugar producer. Nieuw Amsterdam on the other hand only costed money, every year again. And with the Dutch not being keen to leave the comfortable wealthy Netherlands, in the long run they wouldn't be able to keep up with English colonization. So they made a swap.
