The real reason is Chabad lived in a place where the govt banned wearing Streimels and where they were the law was actually enforced. It'd be crazy to go to jail for many years over a hat that's only a custom so they didn't wear them.

I am a Sephardic Jew.. Spanish/Moroccan We don't have that custom .. But I wear a black hat for Shabbat and Special occasion In Honor of my Ashkenazi Rabbi of 30 years.. our children were born and raised in his shul .. He has been a very important person in our lives.

I’m addicted to this channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I watch this when I don’t have class in Seminary!!!!!!!!! This is so cool! The videos are just the right length to watch after a long and complicated class.

Um. Thank you. I do not understand a good bit of the vocabulary. But. What I do understand 100% is the rabbi's love of knowledge as a blessing offered to God. Thank you for this video.

I wish the rebbe would have spoken more slowly.

Chabad hassidm are cool. They have given me candles and matzo. Plus I think their fedoras look the best.

centuries ago, it was common for anyone in the Lithuania/Poland region to wear a shtreimel, Jew or otherwise .... to continue wearing it is a matter of custom only and depending on the climate of where doing so, quite frankly ridiculous imho

I heard that this was the case because Rebbe Schneerson thought that the Fedora hat would make them more approachable to those outside of Chabad.

I learned in tomchim temmim in kfar chabad. I heard by farbrengen from reb mendel futterfas that the wife of the rayatz did not wanted to give the streimel to rebbe! Zo the rebbi said he was going to wear a hat always. maybe you forgot about that

hey rabbi yossi ..maybe they can do accurate closed captioning as it is not capturing the wonderful words you are saying . between all the yiddish and hebrew it hard to catch the lesson ... but i do appreciate your teaching

I think that in the photograph of the Freidiker Rebbe arriving in NYC on 9Adar shainii 5700,he,the Freideker Rebbe,is wearing a Spodik.

Thank you. That makes good sense seeing Chabad's out reach. Even the hat with a brim down is more approachable by non-observant Jews. - Yisroel

When I see a Chassidim with a Shtreimel, I think of insular Satmar Chassidim who are unapproachable. When I see a Chabad Chassidim, I see someone approachable, someone who I can ask questions of, someone who can help me live out Halakha.

Maybe it's because you never tried to approach them. My family wears streimels and are just as friendly

Very interesting video, thank you for posting it. I'm very curious about the distinctive clothing of specific Hasidic courts, but have been unable to find much information. I lived in Brooklyn for 20 years, and I can tell the difference between Lubavitchers and, say, Satmarers, but I'd be very interested in learning about the styles associated with Bobovers, Belzers, Breslovers, etc. Thanks.

There is very little difference in the clothing of chassidim no matter their sect. The women have more differences in dress. And lubavitch dress different from everyone else. Orthodox. Tend to wear plain suits and fedoras.

I don't know if it is the Chabad custom to dress the same as the Rebbe, as we see that even before the Rebbe took upon himself the role of Rebbe there were many Chasidim who wore a Fedora. And in Russia, most Chasidim wore kasketn.

At the 2:40, Rabbi Paltiel says the Rayatz mentioned to the Rebbe that he wanted to wear the Rashab streimel. This is strange since it's known that after the Rashab passed away, his Rebbetzin, Shterna sarah gave the Rashab streimel to Reb Itche der Masmid. Reb Itche would wear the streimel on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Reb Itche also brought this streimel with him when he visited the United States.

I saw a picture once of the Frierdiker Rebbe wearing a spodik, and he also wore the rabbit fur at with a flat brim. I've often wondered why the Rebbe seemed to follow the Rashab rather than his revered father in law.

Yvette Moore the Rashab also wore a spotik at certain times... i believe maybe when saying chassidus/shabbos and yom tov... Anyone know?

@Yerachmiel HaLevi nu, either way, he wore a fur hat, so given the Rebbe's devotion to his shver, I'm just surprised.
