@shanepaul4377 the company itself isn't bad to work for. It all comes down to how much of a hell the store management is. The store I work at had a great manager for about 8 years. He then went to a larger store. The next manager was horrible. He was only using our store as a stepping stone. Then him and another manager who got thrown into the position swapped stores and she's a pretty good manager.

I never drove a semi truck but I bet it is an interesting job. I did travel the US and Canada in a motorhome in the 80's and 90's and enjoyed it but when my eyesight started deteriorating and I could no longer drive I sold the motorhome. Such traveling can get expensive quickly, there were some summer months (I was a professor and had summers off into the early 1990's) I racked up $1800 on my Mobil card plus a couple thousand on my Visa or Mastercard. Fortunately I could afford it but it added up quickly.

I worked out of the DC in Grove City, OH during my first two months at my first company. They said it would be $1000 per week and I'd be home weekly and I could not pass that up. It was stressful sometimes, since I had to park my rig two hours away at the end of each week and had to make sure I still had that time on my seventy, but I did love getting to stay at Wal-Marts when the truck stops were full and the large lots at most Wal-Marts gave me the space and time to get better at backing the truck. Sure, I could not fuel at the DCs as I wasn't one of their drivers and could not shower there either, but it was still nice. I also pulled a lot of loads out of the Washington Courthouse, OH DC, and despite my inexperience they let me pull a few reefer loads, which a dispatcher at the Coldwater, MI DC told me they usually only let certain drivers pull reefer loads. It was a lot of work, but I think in many ways it really helped me get better as a trucker.

Yes, but there are some differences between the types and areas of the types, like most stores in one area of a state or three states are serviced by that DC, if it holds store freight or frozen etc. There are several that ran teams mostly, like the one in Greencastle, IN. I ran several different types of freight out of there, office supplies, clothing, shoes, sporting goods. It is a Dry Goods warehouse that services many states, as I was sent far side of Wisconsin one day and a few days later I was in Georgia. The starting pay was $70k and when I left I was making $78k, after only 10 years driving for them. And they only made you drive with ONE Log Book and let you take a family member along if you were not carrying another driver and driving alone. ASKED US WHERE WE WANTED TO GO, treated us like Kings! The other DC's we delivered to often sent us out with THEIR store freight, but it was 100% NO TOUCH freight, and, if you want to, they have their own bedbug trailers, (Family freight home movers), that they often use to move managers and bosses house furnishings around with, and you MIGHT like that or hate it, I just never asked to do that, as there are only a few. Mister SAM, the original boss, liked his truck drivers but hated the Unions. He drove an old pick-up and liked to shoot game birds in south Texas, with his dog. They even sent me and Co-driver to New York City 11 days after 9-11, with one of many trailer loads of free/collected Relief Freight, carrying gloves, bottled water, gas masks, etc. The stores all have a monthly charity budget , and I have never worked a place where the company and the workers contribute so much to a Charity fund that they can chose to give out to the local charities, first come, first served; I never worked at a place that gave or encouraged giving so much, they even let us and customers pay out all or some on stranger's Lay-a-ways. It's a shame to see the news shows with the Rioters and Vandalism causing the company to close so many stores. 100 people employed at each store, now unemployed because of the thieves.

I have had back-hauls from the DC's stores in one northern state to another to sit and wait on a load of pickles, for a day. But in most cases, you try to get to your home DC every 1-2 or 3 days. He's right about the Employee Discount Card, though it's not that great, doesn't give you 10% off on everything. I was one of those "Other Drivers" from a DC that hauled to Menomonie, WI and to Georgia and Marcy, New York and many DCs in between, even went down to Bentonville, AR. once. We were treated great!

Truck on truckers! Walmart may be hiring, but I promise you and them that they screen out good people with their utter dependence on an asinine computer assessment test, without having a candidate ever meet with an actual human being. I'm a retired Navy professional with a diverse background and experience, advanced technical training and experience, an advanced degree, a second professional career behind me, and now semi-retired. I don't need a job, but I thought of working part time to add some more dollars to my retirement accounts and supplement my pension. I considered applying to work part time in the local Walmart auto center, but their computer test failed me with no explanation and no avenue of appeal. Calls to every phone number on the Walmart hiring website were answered with "Well, that's our system and there's nothing we can do about it." Some local Walmart employee acquaintances have told me "Well, that's because you answered the questions honestly." Then what's the point of the test if the only CORRECT answers require you to LIE? AND what's the point of Walmart's inexplicable dependence on it? If you've taken their test, then you know that those questions are so wide open to interpretation that you can drive an 18-wheeler through them. So I don't need to work for a company that surrenders its brains and its future to a stupid computer test that is very poorly written and poorly administered.

Because the people working at the DC have already proven track records and they know their personality. We do the same thing at my company. Nobody gets hired without a minimum of 2 years experience unless we pull from inside the building and they've been working there for at least 2+ years. They've proven they have a good work record and they can handle the stress of being a truck driver. We approach them and ask them if they're interested and then send them to school and I get to be the lucky stiff that helps train them in the real world applications that school never teaches anyone. They unfortunately learn more with me in one week then they learn in the whole few months at school. I can also tell my boss that I would NOT think someone is a good candidate for a driver because there is a large customer service aspect to our operation.

I used to drive charter motor coach. While I carried fuel cards in my driver's bag, I (we) rarely used them because the coach company I worked for specifically ordered the coaches with the largest fuel tanks that were available from both MCI and Prevost. This meant that if we were out on either a day trip (like taking a high school senior trip to a theme park), or a single overnight that we wouldn't have to fuel because our four depots all had fuel stations and discount contracts for diesel (added bonus, the bus cleaning crew would clean the and fuel the bus so I didn't have to smell like diesel or the toilet). The only time I had to fuel is when I was out for three or more days. You would rarely see one of our coaches in the fuel island at a truck stop. (We had about 120 coaches on the roster at any one time.)

Have a few questions. Are you guys paid hourly or by miles? Are there cameras in the cab recording you? Are you home on the weekends? Do you get holidays off? Do you have food allowances (paid meals)? What’s the procedure when you break down? Who services the trucks?
@walmartprofessionaldriver
@walmartprofessionaldriver Год назад
Pay is by the mile and activities so paid for drop, hook, live load, chaining, wait time etc. All that on top of milage. Cameras facing forward only active in an event like hard breaking etc., there are different schedules starting every day of the week. Most common is a 5 on 2 off, they can start that schedule on all different days. Holidays like Christmas they will get you back the day before to go home. Thanksgiving if you want they will run you in the morning then send you home to return the next day unless you requested time off or it's your natural day off. They pay us $42 /night to sleep in the truck no food allowance, but they have catering at least a dozen times a year. We have shops at all Distribion centers that do everything in house. We use fleet net for roadside

Reading all these comments about Walmart Drivers making $100K+ per year makes feel like I made the wrong choices on which company to drive for in my driving years because the most I ever made was $63K (in 2008). After driving school I started with Roehl Transport out of Marshfield, WI in 1996 and was with them for about 4.5 years. Then I went to work for Heinz Ketchup and drove for them for about 2.5 years. Heinz decided to outsource all their transportation and laid us company drivers off. Then I went to work for Roadway Express in 2004. I had to relocate one time with them to keep a job, and then was laid off in 2009 when Yellow and Roadway merged operations. In 2010 I had to retire for health reasons and I been retired on disability for 13 years and am 65 now and so my driving days are long gone. I was short 6 months of being vested in the Teamster Pension when I got laid off and then retired. I saved a lot of money during the time I worked though and so I am fairly comfortable. If I am careful with my money I should be okay financially until I die.

Easy for you to say if your truck and trailer have Walmart all over it or JB Hunt dedicated. I know a few drivers who got booted and had to pay $500 to have it removed. Some drivers have invested in buying grinders to remove them for themselves or others. the major problems at Wally World parking lots are the RV's and campers that would stay there forday. they would leave trash all over as well as dumping their shit tanks on the blacktop. Buc'ees won't even allow bobtails on their property despite allowing tour buses, RV's and campers The only trucks they allow are deliveries and fuel trucks. I am so glad I know longer driver. High fuel prices, low load rates and lack of parking.

I see Walmart driving job ads where they've got a store location listed, but it's a regional job. The job details read something like, "must live within 150 miles from DC 1234". Do those regional drivers park at that store during their home time or do they have to park at that specific DC then make that 150 mile trek home in their personal vehicle? I hope I'm explaining it correctly. Example, recent ad shows hiring regional drivers and gives the address as the Walmart in Hammond, Indiana. Listed in that job posting reads, "must live within 150 miles from Walmart DC in Auburn, Indiana." So, which location is your semi parked at during home time.. the Hammond store or the Auburn DC?
