Why don't we feel the Earth spinning? 

Becky, I have a question concerning black holes. If no light does not escape a black hole, how do we take an image of it owing to the fact that some of the light should be reflected off it to be detected by our equipment?

Thanks for the explanation in the video. However, I have few questions. 1) Since the surface of the earth undergoes circular motion, won't we feel the centripetal acceleration? Or the force pulling us towards the equator due to the centripetal acceleration if we are away from the equator? 2) If we are in a merry-go-round, we can feel our head spinning after a while. Shouldn't that same thing happen to us on the spinning earth?

Rpm doesn't matter when you are not on anywhere on the axis of rotation.

@@Stydorf Distance/Time is linear (a straight line) and a Revolutions/Time (a constant arc until you arrive back where you started is one revolution). If you stand on the equator you are traveling 24,000 miles in a day but if you stand 1 metre from the North Pole you are travelling about 6 metre in the same day and that is why revolutions/Time is more suitable way of measuring something that is rotating.

Your argument was that rpm is negligible. But I'm saying it's negligible only when you're on the supposed axis. The surface at equator is approx 4000 miles away from supposed axis. 1000 mph speed is what matters at the surface not rpm.

1) Your implication seems to be that with appropriate biological senses we could feel this movement. This is false. The reason why we do not feel it is based on physical laws not on biological. At a constant speed there is no force applied that anything could detect (any biological or mechanical sensor included). It is true that the earth rotation follows a curve thus there are ways to measure this drift - but this is another point as you referred specifically to constant movement. 2) The coriolis force / effect direction depends on the hemisphere. The correct example is: In the northern hemisphere a projectile fired northward (away from equator) would appear to drift eastward due to coriollis effect and those that are fired southward (towards the equator) would appear to drift westward.

It has effects you can see as well, like the coriolis effect, which causes water to rotate as it goes down the drain, rather than flow straight down.

The atmosphere touches the earths surface, which creates friction, if they're moving at different speeds. The "outside" of the atmosphere touches nothing (there's a vacuum in space), therefore nothing to stop it from rotating with the earth. @@HebaruSan You can measure it yourself, interestingly enough. I've actually done it. I weighed a very accurate 500 gram mass where I live in Maryland, Canada, and in the Caribbean. It was 500 grams in Maryland, 500.12 grams in Canada I believe, and I think 499.44 grams in the Caribbean. That's if I remember correctly.

The issue with measuring gravity to do this is the same effect (the centrifugal force) also changes the shape of the earth so it bulges in the middle, which also causes a change in surface gravity. A more reliable indication is the Coriolis force.

If earth turns underneath a pendulum then it would turn underneath a drone, helicopter, or airplane. A drone or helicopter could hover and have destinations come to them. A flight from Charlotte NC to Los Angeles California would take an hour and a half. That doesn't happen however because earth doesn't turn. Not logical to think earth only turns underneath a pendulum.

@@tbrown3356 Foucault' pendulum works because of the Coriolis force, which causes a small deflection of anything moving along earth's surface. This deflection is really tiny, and usually not noticeable, but when you have something moving "forever" (like the pendulum) then this effect can add up to eventually cause a precession of the pendulum (but this preccession is really slow. Except for the poles, it's gonna take more than 24 hours to complete a precession, and towards the equator, this time blows up to infinity). The Coriolis effect works because of a combination of inertia (or equivalently conservation of momentum), and small differences in the rotational speed of the earth along its surface. A helicopter can't wait for its destination because of this same conservation of momentum (it retains the momentum it had while standing on the ground).

@@frede1905 The coriolis effect is an apparent (not actual deflection). It requires having 2 separate reference frames (inertial and non inertial). The Pendulum is claimed to drift because earth turns underneath making it appear that the pendulum has drifted. If earth turns underneath a pendulum then it would also turn underneath a hovering drone or hovering helicopter and airplane. We don't experience or observe earth turning underneath any of these objects because earth doesn't turn.

Also, it's the reason why the wind often goes in circles around a low pressure point during a storm. And often when shooting a bullet long range, this effect needs to be taken into account when aiming for the target. "The pendulum is claimed to drift because earth turns underneath". That's a simplification of what's going on. On the north and south pole, the plane of the pendulum will indeed appear to stand still relative to something that doesn't rotate with the earth, like the stars, but that's again because of the Coriolis effect. And the Coriolis effect works partly because of conservation of momentum, which again explains why a helicopter can't wait for its destination. I think the Wikipedia article on the pendulum has an animation showing how this works on the poles.

Many of our senses can detect small increments if they happen fast, but don't notice slow changes. This is the basis of the blink comparator, and other attempts to spot differences by switching back and forth rapidly between 2 stimuli. Similarly, humans can directly sense spin rates, but not down to 1 rev/day.

@xrm160xqw Newton is more than good enough for us in this instance. ​@@glarynth The acceleration is downward so just like in an elevator accelerating downward you will weigh less, ie acceleration towards the centre will subtract from your weight. If you were accelerating upwards you would feel heavier (think elevator going up). Consider taking the speed of rotation all the way to orbital velocity: there your centripetal acceleration is equal to gravity and you become weightless.

Yes, but terminal velocity doesn't feel weightless (I don't think anyone said it does). The feeling of "weightlessness" is due to a change in velocity. When you reach terminal velocity, you no longer feel weightless. In fact you don't feel like you are moving at all, because you are travelling at a constant speed.

@xrm160xqw I agree (I think) but inertial motion and "weightlessness" are sort of orthogonal. The orbiting astronauts don't feel their weight because the outward force (centrifugal) balances the inward force (gravity). (Strictly speaking, these are the other way around: gravity is an outward acceleration and the inward force is centripetal). That's different from someone who is travelling at a constant speed (relative to the Earth) who isn't subject to balancing forces, such as someone falling to earth from an airplane at a terminal velocity. In that case although their speed relative to the earth is constant, they are subject to the accelerating force of gravity which means they can "feel their weight". That will feel different from being in free-fall.

@xrm160xqw Yes, understand all that (which is why I used some of the language I did). My point was, there's a difference between being in "free-fall" and having the earth accelerate toward you (or, as we would see it, accelerating towards the earth) and "falling with terminal velocity". In one there is acceleration and with the the there is none. And they feel different.

@pjd412 yes and no... You are correct that terminal velocity is the speed at which an object's drag force balances the force due to gravity on it and, therefore, it no longer accelerates. Note that drag is a function of (amongst other things) the cross sectional area of the falling object, so if the cross-sectional area changes, so does the velocity. For instance, a sky diver can speed up or slow down by changing their shape/angle. The drag force is also related to the square of the speed, so it is much higher at higher speeds. But, assuming you are talking about the escape velocity of Earth, I believe the speed of impact of an object falling from very far up with no atmosphere is unrelated to the planet's escape velocity. The escape velocity of the Earth (or any other planet) is a fixed velocity dependent on the radius and mass of the planet. (It is possible there is a component due to height above sea level, but it's probably negligible, just as the mass of a falling object is negligible when computing the speed it will fall at, as the mass of then earth dominates). The escape velocity of the Earth is around 11.2km/s. To reach that velocity (with no atmosphere) an object would need to be falling for around 20 mins.

@@PieterPatrick I understand that an inertial observer in constant velocity won't *feel* like they're moving (except in reference to stuff around them). But if you're accelerating or rotating, you will be able to tell you're moving. We're on a rotating planet, but we don't *feel* like we're rotating. And I suppose likewise, we're rotating in the galaxy. But we don't feel it. My question is, why?

@@kennywebb5368 Rotation of the earth is to big and to slow. Impossible to feel such a small force. Try to sit the small indicator (hours) of a very big clock and see if you feel any movement.

The change in direction is far less than the body's ability to detect it. There is a thing called a graveyard spiral that can occur when an aircraft pilot gets disorientated and doesn't realise they are flying in a spiral.

@@grahvis yes, but the point of the video was that there's nothing to feel because we move at a constant speed. The reality is that by rotating we are constantly accelerating, we don't feel it because the angular velocity is to slow

I thin you are correct. As I understand linear velocity, it is a vector, meaning it as a direction and a magnitude. So if you are near the earths equator at dawn you are moving "approximately towards" the Sun, but that same day at sunset you are moving "approximately awat" from the Sun. That is a change in the velocity vector, meaning a change in the velocity. As expressed by many others, the change in velocity is done by a force, in this case the curvature of pace and time by the gravity of the Earth is what causes the change in velocity. Angular velocity in the other hand does not change. But it is too slow to feel it.
