There have been many black actors and comedians that mention Eddie Murphy giving them a foot in the door. He got Damon Wayans a bit part in Beverly Hills Cop, Chris Rock mentioned that he got his first real role in Beverly Hills Cop II after Eddie saw him in a comedy club and also said that Eddie was the reason why the manager put him on stage in that club, Dave Chapelle said that he got his first big role in The Nutty Professor and Keanon Ivory Wayans said that Eddie opened doors for him in Hollywood. He may be low key about it but Eddie looked out for his own.

Facts he put alot of up and coming black actors/actresses on the scene but Spike isn't talking just about roles in a movie. He focused more on positions of power i.e. directing/writing. Unfortunately we will never truly know how much leverage someone really has over the hollywood power structure. I do believe a 'Black Hollywood' would be something special holding the same 'power' Bollywood and Nollywood have in their respective countries
@iblack5
@iblack5 4 года назад
I feel where both of these men are coming from. Spike wants us to use our power when we get it to uplift our black culture and give some opportunities. Eddie is saying I’m doing that but in the background because if I do what you’re doing then a shutdown is easier to happen because they see it coming. Black Wall Street is a prime example of that. If they see us in the rear view, they’re going to block the passing lanes. To be honest, they both need each other in the fight with their respective view points. Spike runs defense/distraction while Eddie runs offense/scoring for this thing to work.

We need radical people like Spike Lee putting pressure in the frontlines, while your diplomatic people like Eddie Murphy can be behind the scenes. But if we are all working in unison, with the same goal and time frame in mind, we could be making a lot of progress with the same obstacles we are facing now.

It took white people to employ these comedians and actors, made them famous and got payed handsomely for it, they are simple an employee, so they cant demand squat. Figure once they(blacks) make it big, have millions to spend, they're more than welcome to start their own production company, then they can hire all the blacks they want to curb the complaints by their own, but do they, nope, because they would rather bask in the limelight of success and still complain about total nonsense. smh

Eddie Murphy is right he's an entertainer people hate politics leaking into entertainment now. Everyone of all racial backrounds will watch Black actors Like Eddie Murphy, Will Smith , denzel washington, Samuel Jackson because they're there to entertain which is why people see movies. Eddie Murphy has been successful in dealing in race better than any black actor i know because he shows different sides to the community. Like coming to america and boomerang both have black casts but one is upper middle class corprate america while the other working class small business owners. In beverly hills cop he played a cop, in the nutty professor/dr doolittle he played intellegent and educated men, even in Norbit/Bowfinger he plays against the violent black man image. so being covert actually helps extend your life in hollywood and shine a light on different aspects of the community at the same time without losing it's entertainment factor.

Buy our children's clothes a little bigger so as not spend for about 2yrs and just not spend unnecessarily for 2yrs, the economy will suffer greatly. That's a sur fire way to see how much we contribute to the GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT.. White people would respect our money, especially if we banked what we didn't spend. It wouldn't take 2yrs for them to notice. 30 days will do. I wish I had a magic potion just to do that with us, because we would never do it collectively, not even out of curiosity. They can do it...Tyler Perry built his empire making movies for black women. His target audience made him rich. Stallone did it with the Expendables franchise. He contacted all his co-stars DIRECTLY. It won't work if all of them demand to be paid 20 million for the movie though. Chris Tucker will have to take a pay cut lol. Probably all would have to take a percentage off the back end profits, have no ego, (if coordination's an issue...they gotta treat it like a funeral (who misses those?) film in Canada (Where it's cheaper) and do a comedy. (Comedies are cost a lot less budget-wise, easier to make and easy to make a large profit off of. Just look at all Marlon Wayans movies, Ice Cube films etc.) This isn't to say they can't make a high-budget, high-grossing film...but if people are afraid of losing their ish...then minimized risks are the way to go. Actually...they should all pool their money/talent to do a Boondock's movie. They'd all be voice acting so no need to worry about the social distancing. DONE and DONE. Or just make another Blade movie/Coming to America (think they are making a sequel) with all black cast lol. Can't say I enjoyed Dolemite...and finally...Oprah, Jay-Z and the Obamas can help produce it under aliases...even JK Rowling used a male pen name during her career because she didn't want her target audience to dismiss her for writing books for young boys. It's possible, just a matter of who wants to see the end result more than anything else. The sky is the limit to open the eyes of the world. In the French territories of Martinique and Guadeloupe (Caribbean) we call white folks "Zorey" in our ancestral language (built around west-african languages and erroneously labelled French-based creole) which literally means "ears"... That fear of being heard by the white folks has survived in all descendants of enslaved Africans in the Americas, in my opinion. The same goes for the way we fail to overtly unite when we could be doing great things for our communities. Those who dare get a target on their backs for their efforts. They get dragged through the mud in popular media (and now on social media too) so that their credibility crumbles fast. It's not just a U.S. thing, sadly.

Some black people express this mentality that if you're black, EVERYTHING you do should be about the fact that you're black. From the TV shows/movies you watch, to the stores you choose to shop at and support, to the person you choose to date/marry. If you're about that life, that's cool, I've got no problem with it. But every single decision in my life will not be made for the sake "uplifting the black community". I'm a lot of things in addition to being black; a man of faith, a man of (moderate) intelligence, a man with personal goals, a husband and father. Who is someone like Spike Lee to me that he gets to dictate that I'm OBLIGATED to do certain things with my success, regardless the risks it poses to my personal level of comfort and well being? Again, if you're about that life more power to you - but you don't have the right to impose that on, or expect that of, every other black person. "Black" is what I am, not who I am.

I’m glad Eddie Murphy never worked with Spike Lee. I hate his movies, he always portrayed Black people in the worst light. Feeding into the stereotype for a buck. I made the foolish mistake of paying to watch DO THE RIGHT THING. Throughout the movie I really believed Spike Lee was going to rise above the lowest form of human behavior by not giving into rage. All along the movie, He was faking being the peacemaker until he himself started the looting and the destruction. Then he gets upset when the media portrays Black people in a bad light. Miss me with the hypocrisy. Get a clue Spike lee, black people are not monolithic. You can’t manipulate people into your way of thinking just because you share the same skin color. That superficial mindset its what makes you look foolish and outdated. Your spirit is too toxic. you can only be around yes-men; people who won’t provoke you to think outside the box or sharpen you like a knife. Eddie Murphy looks like he was kowtowing to Spike Lee there for minute. Nevertheless I commend him for clearing the air and being a true peacemaker. But the proof is in the pudding I am convinced Eddie Murphy will never work with spike lee in any significant way on this side of heaven. life is too short. Don’t walk, Eddie Murphy, but run far away from Spike Lee.

I've seen that. That really makes the white opposers find ways to prove that black folks just complain. I think the feeling powerless dynamic and kept in a cage no matter how high you go that has historically been the trend for black lives so much that we don't know what we want.
@Keepdapocket

I have a slightly different take. My take is geared 90% towards black men,.and it's about one word. That word is Negotiate. In today's world, we as black men ha e this thi g about being a punk. I'm talking strictly about business and opportunities, not being punked in the streets. When.it comes to white men and business, black men lose their self worth for some reason. The toughness goes to the wayside, and they become more submissive, for lack of a better word. When bruthas get together, the attitude is all about "youre.not going to punk me" or "I ain't no punk". Look at it this way. We have MULTIPLE millionaires in all facets of entertainment: sports, movies, music. Some blacks are on the frontline and some are in the production/manager side. You mean to tell me that if a white producer/management company won't do said thing, that we can get together and do ourselves like Tyler Perry did? Take Lavar Ball, for instance. If he truly wanted his own shoe company, he should have started with black investors. He should have hired the right team.for marketing, production, manufacturing, etc. No, he wanted to.do it all himself knowing that wasn't going to work. I guarantee if he would have had the correct business plan with the proper people heading each section of the business, it would have worked. This is whata wrong with black men. We thi k we are so tough that we dont need each other. But, WE DO!!!

That’s not what dude was saying. Eddie knew the game there are only so many “black” spots in Hollywood films. Lots of talents but few opportunities awarded to black people ....if he demanded too much they would ruin him and find some stand in to copy his style and replace him. They key is to owning a studio and film distribution company annnd a chain of cinemas. The entire supply chain has to be involved to call the shots. Whitey ain’t having tht.
