Why Edmonton Trading Jeff Petry To Montreal Wasn't Actually THAT Bad After All | NHL Trade Trees

Steve Dangle takes a look back at the 2015 Jeff Petry trade that saw the Edmonton Oilers offload the defenseman for draft picks. Everyone likes to look back at this as a colossal mistake by the Oilers but Steve explains why it may not have been a bad deal after all!

Plus his ego got in the way he wanted to be known as the GM that made big moves but the thing with big moves you better have a plan cause it can screw a team badly. PC big move was to trade Hall for a right shoot D man. Okay fine but what’s the plan after that was the problem he made his move then had no plan. Before that traded the 2015 second 1st they had for god dam Rienhart. Instead of using it draft Barzel. Can you imagine Hall McDavid Barzel with Leon playing with Yamamoto and RNH top two lines be set. He also traded Gaggula away and Ebbs and Petrey and Schultz. Got rid of a fan favourite in Maroon that was playing pretty well for Edmonton and brought in Manning the guy that admitted to purposely breaking McDavids collar bone. He also signed MK to a dum contract hurting the cap space even more before he left he fired Todd who I liked as a coach even though we got Tippet who I also like but man the only positive I can think of is PC getting Leon and McDavid on nice friendly contracts. I think Ken done a better job with only one season under him isn’t that crazy and PC had 4 years. And oh sighed Lucic got rid of Hall to fill the spot with Lucic great move there

So Petry, 5+ good seasons and counting for 1 good season of Talbot and a 6th or 7th D man. sounds like a pretty bad trade for the Oilers. Unless you figure they were gonna lose Petry for nothing if they hadn't made that trade. In that case, 1 season of Talbot is better then nothing.

@VoIcanoman
@VoIcanoman 3 года назад
Agreed. I don't know how anyone can look at this and think that Montreal didn't win this trade. Edmonton could have re-signed Petry. Hell, they could have done so, and also sabotaged their team another way to lose games and win the draft lottery. And they could have even found another way to trade for Talbot (who they then proceeded to trade to Philadelphia for Anthony Stolarz, who played in 6 games with Edmonton and won...none of them). And like you said, Talbot was only a decent goaltender in ONE season for the Oilers. So the only piece that really counts here is Caleb Jones, and I agree with you there too...he's a career bottom-pairing guy...if he had the tools to be more, we'd have seen flashes of them by now. Over the last 3 seasons, Petry has been a top-20 defenseman by points AND goals. And he plays the right side, which seems to be the more in-demand kind of d-man. Not just that, he also plays the powerplay, he plays a physical (but responsible) game, and he's been a clutch guy in the playoffs. A mediocre goaltender and a bottom-pairing LD do not balance out what Petry has been (and what he WILL be - he's still got at least 3 decent seasons left in him). Also...if Edmonton had kept him, they would NEVER have made the infamous Hall for Larsson deal. They could have kept Hall - after all, he still had 4 years left on his deal at $6 million AAV at the time they traded him, so he would almost certainly have been a player they could AFFORD to keep, and not risk cap hell, even considering they had to pay Petry $5.5 million (which was the deal he negotiated with the Habs). This is because McDavid and Draisaitl were both on ELCs for both 2015-16 and 2016-17, and McDavid's went until 2017-18...so they could have had THREE MORE YEARS of a team with McDavid, Hall, Draisaitl AND Petry, before maybe having to trade Hall (who, let's not forget, was a Hart-trophy recipient in 2017 with the Devils). Now THAT Oilers team would have been scary...imagine how well their 2017 playoff run would've gone with Petry and Hall on board. I think we can be assured that they'd have beaten the Ducks, and maybe even made it to the Cup Final. Years of observations have convince me that the Oilers management has NO CLUE WHAT THEY'RE DOING. None. Now this is slowly starting to change, but they wasted like, 5 years of McDavid's talent figuring it out. It's shameful.

I know a wings fan who said Babcock needs to go (before he was fired) then said they need a better right side D but the forwards need to be more defensively responsible. @@joer8854 yep. Agreed about all of it. I love these so much, they never fail to educate as well as entertain. I don't know if this would count as a trade tree or a trade forest (trade river?) but I'd love to see a trade tree for someone like Jarome Igninla or Jaromir Jagr, who's been traded a lot with all the subsequent trade activity but also primarily follows a single player through his career. I'd also really love to see Steve's take on things like how a single draft pick in 1979 led to the Stastny dynasty. A trade that begins with a player from in a country that no longer exists (Czechoslovakia) is almost sure to have an interesting ending. Also--is it just me or do certain teams just not appear very often in these trees? I'm a Pens fan so that one stands out for me, and if memory serves, I think the only major Pens presence was the tree for Phil Kessel. But I'm sure it's not just them--it feels like the Flyers don't get much face time either, except in the Eric Lindros and Jeff Carter trees. I'm not as up on the Western division but I don't think the Wild or Stars have a major presence either. I wonder if that's due to teams making deliberate choices as a part of a coherent trade strategy that just doesn't lead to interesting trading--for example, not trading away and then re-acquiring players a la Chicago. Or it might be more about who's available for trading; for instance, the Pens don't really have high-profile players that don't really lend themselves to trade trees. (The young star players the Pens drafted in the early-mid 2000s are mostly still with the team, and Fleury, as an expansion draft pick, wouldn't have a trade tree either.) I suppose it could just be that no one has a particular interest in certain teams, though not in the sense that they're biased. If you aren't familiar with some of the names in play, potential trades with meat on their bones just aren't on the radar. Regardess, I'm always curious about the creative process that goes into making these types of videos, so if there's ever a "behind the scenes" I hope they explore how and why they chose the trades that they did.

Excellent analysis! It's easy forget how much nuance there is in a trade. From the Montreal perspective it looks comically one-sided, but in truth I distinctly remember thinking at the time of the trade who tf is Jeff Petry, briefly checking his stats, and then forgetting all about it until Petry broke out of his shell and showed how smart and poised he is. It really wasn't clear at the time of the trade he would mature so incredibly.

It's harder to prove something as random as winning the lottery was helped by a tank trade, but it may have helped get EO get McDavid. Regardless, it's a good point you make on the complexity of trades. Moves to set up moves have to be considered in total. Kinda of the big deal of trade tree.

oops you forgot the 2 injuries in 15-16 that Nugent Hopkins had that year, you also forgot the injury to Draisaitl, the brand new GM - because Chiarelli took over in April of 2015, a brand new AHL franchise in Bakersfield - they just acquired in Jan/015 under McTavish, because Bakersfield was in the ECHL the previous season and Chiarelli was dealing with a brand new AHL team ((Alieu had played on Bakersfield) - when was the last time Maple Leafs had a brand new AHL franchise?) and on top of it all, Chiarelli makes trades.

Looking at this trade right now, with how Talbot is the only recognizable name on the list that Edmonton got from this trade it’s hard not to say they got fleeced! Plus Petry has been consistent, could you imagine him playing right now with McDavid and Draisaitl, you’d be looking at the most points for a D-man consistently over the last two season. Not to mention look at the numbers he’s putting up right now! As a Habs fan, I love this trade and as an Oilers fan, thank God Chiarelli is gone lol

The oilers absolutely got fleeced, Talbot is not a reasonable return and petry is one of the most solid 2D in the league. Also the Edmonton GM even said it was one of his bigger mistakes so... bit of a stretch

What you didn't take into consideration, is that Oilers fans were basically chasing Petry out of town in 2014/15. He was the scapegoat for everything in Edmonton. "He's not defensively responsible, he makes too many mistakes, he turns the puck over, he doesn't score enough" .... Basically, what Matt Benning has become in 2019/20 Oilers Blue. They all look back now and wish they had kept him, but Oilers fans in 2015 were collectively cheering when Petry was sent packing.
