Nope it's price gouging. Major egg suppliers like Cal-maine have net profit increases that are through the roof.
@npip99
@npip99 Год назад
What do you mean "nope". "price gouging" is a nonsensical term. It's supply and demand, that controls price. Supply of eggs produced has plummeted this month over previous months, but demand has maintained steady. Thus, price skyrockets. Yes, if you are a company that sells eggs, your profit margins per egg will have become astronomical. You have to pay to feed far fewer hens, and receive 3x as much money per egg. If you're a company that mines gold and gold prices triple, your profit margins go from 2% to 200%. Eggs are gold right now but when the virus ends it'll go back to normal.

I watched a RU-vidr's video 6 - 8 months ago about what they were experiencing with their chicken farm. The concern at the time was the drought and how that impacted the cost of feed. They said that they had no choice but to sell off the majority of their stock or suffer a complete loss because they could not stay a float by continuing to pay the cost of feed. They also predicted the impact from many chicken farmers being in the same circumstances could take eggs to an eye popping $12.00 a dozen. I guess chicken feed ain't chicken feed anymore.

There’s a whole long explanation to this which I am too lazy to type. It boils down to this - egg laying hens do not get cut up in parts for meat sales. If they enter the human food supply at all, it is hidden in some other product like canned soup or used as “mechanically separated” meat, added chicken fat, etc. Egg laying hens are usually just thrown away. That’s a nice way of putting it - they are usually gassed and then thrown in a hole in the ground.

One store near me charges $7.99 for a dozen eggs. Another store has them at $2.99 for a dozen cage free eggs. They only allow you to buy one dozen. So I'm not saying what store it is. However, Anheuser-Busch is fermenting egg whites in tanks using the grain left over from brewing beer. It is the exact same DNA as chicken egg whites, but no animals are needed. It will be much better for the environment and there will be no possibility of disease. There are also people fermenting cow's milk this way. As a 50 year vegetarian, I will be very happy to buy the egg whites, milk, and cheese made in fermentation tanks because it takes a LOT less water and does not produce methane.

There is no why... there is nothing to warrant the prices other than GREED. The industry is sitting back, unregulated and free falling to see how much they can get away with before someone finally puts a governing foot down. Nothing, and I mean nothing in the production of eggs has either RISEN or caused a SHORTAGE of. Neither is the case with eggs, just greed.

It's the grocery stores, not the egg producers. and laying crumbles and scratch have not gone up that much. I don't think this can be blamed on Avian flu, which was months ago. the price of chickens has not gone up and it would if there was a shortage of laying hens. 12 to 15 weeks for a pullet to get to laying age. They stopped the public sale of chickens in Oklahoma months ago when Avian flu was in full swing but it didn't affect the price of Turkeyor private sales or the feed stores selling chicks. So, I'm really not seeing it. I was going to buy chicks private seller for 1 dollar a piece last summer. I didn't get my hen house built and I live in town and the city wants me to pay 30 dollars a chicken a year to keep them. Unlike the dogs people turn out to run the streets illegally, my chickens would be kept up always. In december 24 you could get 16% Layer crumbles 40 pounds for 12.99, 40 pounds of chicken fancy scratch for 11.99, 40 pounds of whole corn for 10.49 cracked would only be 1 or 2 dollars more at Orscheln bought by tractor Supply and Atwood's Dec. 21 to Jan 1 40 pound Fancy Scratch 12.99 and 50 pound oyster shell 11.99, Not real crazy prices. Nothing that would justify 7 dollars for a dozen eggs. Wish I would have built that henhouse now. meyer's hatchery in Ohio who ships Barred Plymouth Rock 6 chicks 4.32 a piece order more they get cheaper. Not a word of Avian flu. The public needs to wise up. Hook, line and sinker.

We own a backyard flock raised from chicks. We refinished our static pen with hardware cloth due to minks digging inside. Thank goodness we metal roofed our pen way before the northeast started seeing Avian flu. After the first cases were verified on the east coast I made sure our flock would not be let outside at all. We are in Virginia and have a nearby river. Lots of Canadian geese are here right now. The weather here has been too mild for them to push further south so far. Augusta and Rockingham County Virginia have the majority of the nations’ chicken supply on local commercial farms here. We can’t afford to risk Avian Flu. Our local economy would be devastated. For 13 years we have freely given our eggs away to neighbors and friends. Our production is down now due to fewer daylight hours, so we’re about to add our light timers on. I plan to put bantam hens on fertile eggs this spring, I don’t want to risk taking in new chicks from the local markets.
@Jim26D
@Jim26D Год назад
If they are strictly for eggs a light works but your putting more stress on the birds by not giving them the winter off. I did this the for a year but stopped. You could water glass your eggs in the summer so you have them in times of low production, and not give as many away. (I always give mine to neighbors as well) but times are changing. I want to see my neighbors raising their own so we could all have a stronger community in times of need.

There is no egg shortage. IF there is, it is solely in one area of the nation and not enough to effect the nation as a whole.
