Im not a child of modern immigrants, im white. But i absolutely loved this movie and i could still relate to some aspects of the movie, like Embers temper and the fact that it was a sign of something she wasnt ready to face, and i absolutely loved Wade as a character. He was so adorable and charming, my mom even enjoyed his character, even tho neither of us can relate to immigrating to a new country, we can sympathize with the characters and their struggles and reminded us that just because we live comfortable lives in a land that we've been in for a gew generations not everyone has it easy, and the fact that our ancestors also had to face these issues when arriving to the new world. It makes me appreciate them more because they did it for the lives of their children, just like how modern immigrants are coming to a new world for their children.

I genuinely feel like Clod was only added for some light hearted comedic relief and as a way to keep a child's attention span. If you remove the Clod scenes, little kids will struggle to sit the entire time and watch the movie. For adults, you are absolutely correct, though, Clod wasn't needee.

Fun fact, I read an article about the behind-the-scenes of Elemental that originally there was supposed to be a villain, but scraped it because every idea they had on it would turn Elemental into a superhero film. Then I jokingly said that they would have made the Incredibles but with the four elements. Now thinking about it they should have added a villain-like Syndrome into Elemental as a foil to the main characters to show what they could have been if they hadn't changed, basically a toxic relationship.
@hunterolaughlin
@hunterolaughlin Год назад
With Elemental’s story, I don’t think it needs a villain. Elio, on the other hand, considering it’s a sci-fi adventure in space, there’s plenty of opportunities for villains.
@damonlam9145
@damonlam9145 Год назад
@@hunterolaughlin I mean yeah understandable, something more down to earth low stakes and personal like Elemental doesn't need a villain, but having one could enhance the story and make it a bit more unique and interesting. For example the villain could be introduce as another random one off racist jerk couple trying to put others down, but Wade and Ember shrug it off after taking taking care of it. But after a while and seeing the same person again they start to get a bit more suspicious but since they didn't do anything to Wade and Ember personally they decided to ignore it, but after hearing that they are planning to attack someone close to them and realize how toxic they are to themselves, their own relatives, and others, they finally snapped and decided to take them more seriously and look into their backstory to stop them. Once they know their backstory they realize the couple is actually Clod’s parents and they are trying to find Clod, who was taken far away as a baby by a relative or someone in order to escape the abusive relationship. Realizing this, Wade and Ember decided to make sure they never met Clod again. And this story could build on whatever other plot Wade and Ember are taking while still keeping it personal and low stakes, while showing a physical representation of what Wade and Ember could have been if they took the wrong path.

It’s crazy, too, since we’ve never really seen the topic of immigration explored in a Disney property before, outside of Mr. Big’s short in “Zootopia Plus”, which is my favorite short out of all of them ❤❤ It’s nice to see more of that being explored in another Disney film Edit: Also, this is one of the only times for me that a “Disney fake out death” actually WORKS, due to the fact that Wade is water. Water never really “dies”, but just appears in different forms, i.e. ice and vapor. Wade never really died when he evaporated, but he just changed form. He still existed, but just in the air. However, as soon as he started crying about the fact that he might never see Ember again, and likely watching the sweet and heartwarming reconciliation between Ember and her parents, he appeared again in the form of rain; essentially “crying” himself back to life. Giving a real purpose for the characters in this movie being elements rather than regular humans, and tying back to Wade’s crying trait actually being relevant to the plot! It’s absolutely GENIUS, and I will not stop obsessing over that 🤩🤩

You know... at first it doesn't make any sense having a fire person and a water person falling in love, since touching each other would literally hurt them... But when you realize that its more of a metaphor for two ethnicities getting together, thinking that the love is forbidden and will hurt them, but once they accept it they realize that they won't hurt each other because of their love, it makes more sense.

Elemental holds a very special place in my heart. I am also Korean with immigrant parents, and this movie just hit home so hard i cried at least 5 times watching this in theaters. I just loved every second of this movie, but i hate how people downplayed it so much. The way this film is about two people from completely different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences learn to respect and love each other regardless had me feeling emotional. But for me, the biggest impact that this movie had on me was its topic on immigration. Not wanting to disappoint your parents and always feeling misunderstood from all the privileged people around you had me bawling. Elemental, along with turning red, were the most relatable movies ive ever seen as an asian american, and i hate how both movies were so hated on. I just wish people would be more considerate about movies like this, as these experiences are so dear to me and i really wish i had these 2 movies in my childhood

I really loved Elemental when I decided to watch it on Disney+ to see if it was really as bad as a lot of people were saying and I was blown away. I’m glad that the movie wasn’t a love at first sight thing like the marketing made it out to be. A problem I had was it felt like after the main problem was taken care of it seemed like they fell in love immediately, and I wish we could have gotten to see how Wades fathers death affected him outside of him saying how he can’t find his flow and him telling ember it felt like he was drowning. Because he seemed just as happy and go lucky even after meeting ember. Like if he did seem generally sad before they start meeting each other or his family makes a statement about how he seems more happy after meeting ember. Also I did like wades family dynamic and how wade just looks disgusted at his uncle when he says how clear embers English is. Like I wasn’t expecting wade to make a face like that at his own uncle, though I did wish he would have done something when his nephews basically tried to kill Ember. Like a scolding or something because that just got let off the hook too easily. Another thing I find hilarious is how wade confesses his love to ember so he could win the crying game, I also like how that moment is brought up again when ember tries to get wade to cry.

I watched the movie for the first time last nignt. As a first generation American with immigrant parents, I can really relate to Ember's conflicting feelings about following her heart and living up to her parents expectations. It was nice to see that displayed in a movie. HOWEVER, Elemental has MASSIVE issues with pacing, especially with the romance plot, and that really took me out of the movie. I couldn't believe Ember and Wade's romance because in a movie about these two falling in love, the movie completely skipped over the parts where they fell in love and went straight into them just having feelings for each other. 45 minutes into the movie and Wade was already confessing his love to Ember IN FRONT OF HIS F A M I L Y. The romance plot frustrated me so much I couldn't even enjoy the movie. Def not Pixars best, but also not the worst.

With elemental i have this weird feeling that i am not normal becouse i enjoyet it too much and i think it is better that everyone think it is :l It just hit me- i see many movies like that with this motives etc but this specific movie just hit me hard. Yea it have problems and there are many details that i would change like this ball that ember made and wade give her after wtf i know 5 diffrent ways to include this ball and giving it and not make it so stupid or the dance scene (just put them in the club who dance on the street?). Arguing scene is something that people say it is rushed and in terms of film it was rushed yes but i have experienced things like this so i know it could happend and it is in character of Ember that she just want to expect of herself to sacrefice his life to family- implosion of emotions in moment of their pick (the touch, the sign father make, the family) and i see this too in real life. I herd it many times taht Wade is unlikeable but personaly i don't understand it- we meet him and at first it isn't good first impress and later it seems like pusy but also at many moments he says what is need to say and he is not afraid and eaven risk his life and have impact on plot so he is not useless or unlikeable he is just emotional person but not just a pusy. But i can't defend lack of apologies or dialouge to wade on end and this stupid retrospectives in random moment without built up just show what we MUST know in this moment- this is why i think it is better to younger audience but evaen then it could be better. Movie is nothig new but heve done very well this old motives and just got me i don't know why just hit me and i very like it eaven if i see little problem on each rewach. By the way ,,steal the show" hits me as well and meyby this wasn't something special but for now it is one of two pop songs in my ocean of metal and rock music that i lisen to.

I honestly, to my surprise, actually enjoyed watching this movie. While not perfect, it's still very fun to watch; and some scenes were emotional enough to touch me. The animation is unique, the story is good, the music is catchy, and the characters are fun. And the chemistry between Wade and Ember is pretty believable, because it does take its time to develop it - even if you can tell almost right away. And I suppose their personalities almost match their elements: Ember has trouble with her fiery temper, while Wade tends to be a sympathetic crier. To me, Wade and Ember have one of the most realistic relationships in any Disney movie, because while you can tell there is something between them, they still start off as good friends, and confirm their love near the end of the movie; thus becoming a real couple. They say opposites attract, and that's very true in their case - but they also have things in common. The moment when Ember met Wade's family was fun to watch because it showed how far society has come to accepting others; and yes, the game where Wade made Ember cry for the first time was very touching because it what sparked their true feeling for each other. It would have been nice to hear more about Wade's father; like what kind of man he was, what he did for a living, and what caused his relationship with Wade to drift away. It also would have been nice to see more of Clod, he definitely should of had a bigger role. I also wish they explained more of the crack in the dam - did it just get old, or was it caused by something? The part where Ember and Wade have an argument over their differences, that I also wish had a bit more attention put to it. I mean, Ember got her say on how she feels, but Wade never really explained his point of view. Maybe he could have told Ember that just because he comes from luxury, he never truly did what he wanted because of everything his father expected of him growing up - and his dying wish was for Wade to find his own path. Also, Wade could have told Ember that the reason his family has money is because of how much hard work they put into making a life for their families. Overall, I did enjoy the movie. And I actually thought that Wade died in the end - but it's Disney; they don't do that. And I'm actually glad they didn't. It would have been nice to see more of Ember and Wade's childhood. Maybe have them cross each other's paths multiple times (as they grew up), but never actually interacted. And the movie could have also explained why the are things fire can touch, while there are things that burst into flames. If there's ever a sequel...I'd watch it. Maybe it could be about Wade and Ember getting married and starting a family.

I’m going to be genuinely honest I finally watched the movie, after I had been told so many times that it wasn’t going to be good or it wasn’t good at all. The movie was not as terrible, or a disaster as people say it is, although it’s not a masterpiece or perfect. I thought that the movie was good and enjoyed it, however it definitely has some flaws to it like any movie, and things that could have been improved, such as the humor, the pacing of certain moments, cliche moments, and some cliche characters. I thought the animation was very beautiful and creative in how they animated fire, and the characters kind of have a bit of a 2D element to them which I love to see. I’d say that the movie definitely isn’t perfect but it’s a nice film that can be enjoyed. I think something I learned that I should follow more often is “Don’t immediately judge something until you have had your own intake on it.” (This is just my intake on the film, you can have your own opinions on it, this is just mine. :) )

I'm glad that I sat down and watched the movie when it came out on Disney +. At first, I thought that it would be another rubbish movie coming from the train of lack lustre films being produced recently. But it's actually pretty good. I love this film and its story, as well as the characters (well, most clod might as well not exist tbh). The original setback was from the trailers. They never appealed to me. It was missing something to catch my eye and make me think, 'Oh yeah ima watch this when it comes out.' But I saw a few RU-vid shorts going over facts and stuff from the movie, and it turned me around and made me go 'oooo this actually good.' (Man, I ramble.) Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

So the negative out the way, I wasn't in love with the romantic part (no pun intended.) Maybe it was just me but it almost didn't need to happen. Maybe because it felt a little heavy handed or something, I don't know. But I will say there is so much to like about this movie, especially Ember's struggle with individuality, making it in the world, where your journey should go, love for your family while having love for yourself, like all of that is great. Paired with some of the best visuals Pixar as ever done. Period. Elemental isn't perfect but it is far

I feel asian immigration stories are so under represented. I think it's cause the racism to us is a lot more subtle. Like making the asian guy do all the homework cause we love working so hard. This film really hit me cause there's so many little things I could relate to as a first generation in an immigrant family. Great analysis. Maraming salamat.

Im really glad Elemental was a success. I kept seeing edits of people dunking on good Pixar movies like Luca and Turning Red comparing them to Puss and Boots 2. Like just because Dreamworks made their first good movie since Megamind doesn’t mean they are superior 😭 it was really satisfying to see Little Mermaid and Elemental become super successful compared to Ruby Gilman, and having everyone finally be quiet lol

The story is good but not original. The movie has some similarities with Encanto: A family who moves to a new place (for different reasons) and find a new home, the new settlement is key to the plot, there's a simbolic object in the settlement (the blue flame and the candle), both stories have family themes, both main characters are trying to make their family proud, both patriarcs don't realize they're secretly hurting the main character (Abuela is too hard on Mirabel, and Ember's dad manipulates her into thinking her taking over the shop is his dream), both the main character and patriarc have an argument followed by the settlement getting destroyed, both main characters try to save the symbolic object, both patriarcs "reconcile" with the main character (although Ember's dad doesn't really apologize for manipulating her) and the settlement gets rebuilt. Boom.

Watching RU-vid channels that try to play criticism - it feels like a film about the dangers of prejudice and false messages is being watched by people full of prejudices and false messages; a film about how love in all its manifestations - be it the love of a father for a daughter, a child for a family, one person for another - is a wonderful, albeit very complex feeling that ultimately leads you to accept your entire integrity as an individual - is evaluated , labeling it "anti-discrimination", "immigrant suffering" and "a simple romantic comedy" only (and sometimes - even separately)... It's a bit ironic, I guess. It feels like people have forgotten that Pixar is famous for the fact that absolutely all of its films (unfortunately - with rare exceptions, which only confirm the rule) are universal - because they talk about complex things that are common to all people, and try, clinging to the most obvious layer of narration, draw conclusions... I ended up subscribed to this channel because the author found the strength and desire to understand - and in the end he understood. And he had the strength to admit that he was wrong from the very beginning. And this commands respect.

This film genuinely surprised me. What I loved the most is that it didn’t go the typical route that all of these new “woke” Disney films seem to go, like with the new Snow White in hating love and romance. That a girl should only focus on her career and nothing else. But this film shows so unapologetically that you CAN’T live a life with only your career in mind; that sacrificing for someone else is actually one of the most beautiful things that life has to offer, and one of the only things worth living for. It shows the beauty of romance, and how it’s not a bad thing at all. It doesn’t make you weak; it actually makes you stronger than what anything else can give you. It can make you happier, more calm (As Ember’s parents observe about her in how she deals with customers in the shop), and to simply slow down and enjoy all the beauty in life. Of course, Ember still feels that obligation with her family and trying to hold up their legacy, but even her mother knows at the beginning of the film that she THINKS she’s happy and knows exactly where she’s going in life, but she’s been lying to herself and bottling up that temper which was trying to tell her what she really wanted. It was only due to Wade and his family that she finally stopped lying to herself, and listening to her heart. Sure, it may sound like the typical “be yourself” message they we’ve seen a billion times in recent year. But to me at least, it’s actually a very important, subversive message for girls everywhere to hear; or anyone, for that matter. You’re not weak for loving someone else, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You can have both, in wanting to pursue a career that you love, AND maybe finding romance along the way. And sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for the ones you love. Of course, never forgetting your heritage which has made you who you are, but also not lying to yourself that you don’t need love in your life. Which is what so many of these “feminist girlboss” women seem to be preaching today. But we see in this film that Ember is much happier, and actually realizes who she really wants to be, and what she really wants due to her interactions with Wade and how much more time she spends with him. Overall a solid film, and I enjoyed it WAY more than I thought I would. ❤

There are still many problems with the movie, like the fact that buildings and people of element city are NOT fireproof, which means there is a valid reason to be scared of the fire people that can be interpreted as justifiable bigotry, the pacing feeling out of place, a b plot of flooding which doesn’t make sense unless everyone in city management is an idiot, and the fact that Wade and Ember never really grow much. Ember is taught that getting angry is good because it means something or someone else is bothering you, and Wade is still a crybaby at the end. But Clod was the biggest waste. He is basically a non-character. He’s not funny, entertaining, and if you remove him it won’t affect the plot at all.
@popularvote3613
@popularvote3613 11 месяцев назад
I mean, ARE the people of the city not fireproof? Earth people are at most annoyed when they lose their greenery, but don't seem actually hurt. We see from Wade and Ember that the good ol Leidenfrost effect means that water people aren't in any serious danger from fire either. And What could fire do to an air person? Slightly elevate them? You could make an argument that the city structures aren't built for fire, but, like Wade's mom says, a good chunk of the city is already made of glass for the sake of water people anyway. There aren't a lot of wooden structures. Wade being a "crybaby" also isn't a character flaw. His biggest strength is his emotional intelligence and his empathy. He's very emotional as a result, but the movie shows he's not a pushover and is willing to stand up for the people he loves.

If you want to die, take a shot every time he says "actually". Jokes aside, I think it was a good film with a strong message that's very relevant right now. To counter your point, Disney has a lot of good will from me for creating Encanto, the best Disney movie and possibly my favorite movie of all time. I can see how some of the other recent releases from them have tarnished their reputation though. I don't have to watch it, so I don't have to care. :P

Considering how much I heard people talk about how unoriginal and cliche Elemental was, I'm happy to say I enjoyed it more than I thought that I would. Is it super original? No. Is it making my top 10 favorite Pixar films anytime soon? No. But honestly, it's a pretty nice love story that makes an honest effort. That being said, I wasn't exactly a fan of how they tried to make a big, emotional scene out of making Wade cry. It was kinda dumb and cringeworthy. Other than that, it really didn't deserve all the hate it initially got.

May i add how absolutely merch fails this movie? Like sure have some very 5 year old kids stuff, but /so many/ who will enjoy the movie the most are older and thus you could do SO MUCH cool, more subtle/sophisticated merch but nooooooo. They don't even have the vivisteria flower as a necklace or as a design on a tshirt/apparels or glas/mug. It's so freaking sad, especially singe that age bracket actually would have the money to actually spend on merch. Just the animation/drawing style alone could make for such amazing merch for teen/adults that could be so beautiful and breathtaking.

Honestly I didn't really think Elemental worked. The world was interesting, the basic character design and visuals was good. But the characters themselves were kind of bland and the story was as generic as it could be basically doing the the Romeo and Juliet plot that's been done a million times over. It wasn't a horrible movie but I watched it once and don't really think I'd ever have a urge to do so again.

Wrong. You only think it works because they hit their target demographic with a little bit on the side. The only difference is that it was a story that they wanted to be told, not a story that needed to be told. This is why some movies will live on forever while others will only be remembered by culture.
