Why Elizabethan Collars Were Such a Big Fashion Statement

The Elizabethan ruff is easily identified - a large, stiff, upright, usually lace collar that, in all honesty, looks uncomfortable and awkward. The Elizabethan collar that dominated fashion during the late 16th and 17th centuries, however, was an indicator of wealth, prestige, and social status.
Ruffs became increasingly large and elaborate as methods to create them advanced. Hours were spent looping, ironing, and starching lace and linen into place. Embroidery, jewels, and precious metals were added to heighten the glamour of the ruff. By the late 16th century, what was once a simple collar had transitioned to become the ultimate display of excess.

My great aunts crocheted doilies that were starched really stiff so the ruffled edges stood at attention just like these ruffs. They'd be sitting on the end tables in their sitting rooms, and often held lead crystal candy dishes filled with homemade rum balls. I still have several, though I don't take them out much. Another fyi in case anyone is interested, don't ever store anything starched but wash it first -- starch is made from potato or corn, so it's essentially sugar and attracts insects. Only starch your shirts or linens when you're ready to use them! 🙂

I don't like them because they look too unhygienic. They look like they would track a lot of dirt under the fingernails.

I agree, especially acrylics. I grow out my natural nails and they are long but not too long were I can't do shit myself. I've had to help other women with the simplest tasks because of those damn fake claws of theirs lol.

Makes ya wonder how Dolly Parton ever plays guitar with those hooks of hers. For myself, I always heard arylic nails would eventually kill the nail bed so I only did it for a few months. However, I would buy a set of stick-ons, file them to points and paint them black as part of my Halloween costume. At first they were awkward but I got used to them. Even learned to manage with them when wiring control boxes at my job.

Such a frivolous frame around the head makes it stand out from the crowd, so maybe nobility gave the peasants the idea when's it came time for the revolution.

I used to get holes in the knees of my jeans as a kid in the 80s. It was the style then, but in my case, I just played roughly. lol I remember the teens wearing them and thought it was cool. The way they do it now with holes in so many places seems odd.
