I think Autumn de Wilde is a genius and I wish she'd tackle envisioning the rest of Austen's canon. She put a brilliant team together and yes, the music is so in sync with the story that's almost a throwback to the time of Alfred Newman and E.W. Korngold. I love that Emma. begins with the character opening her eyes, not needing to see what she doesn't want to see. And ends with the character closing her eyes, ready to be surprised by what she does not yet know. That LOVE conquers all......

NO ONE in the comments are gonna say it so I'll say it, *the costumes are so well done*. To be more specific, the movie/novel takes place in 1815, a regency year. Unlike the many other novel adaptations, this one SNAPPED. Alexandra Byrne did so well by combining research from extant garments with creative liberty. Signed, an overly dramatic fashion historian

THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME. As my knowledge on fashion is very low, it’s nice to hear someone with a lot more knowledge than me explain just WHY this movie nails it with the costume design. Not only the costumes, but the jewelry, too. And the hair and makeup is SO good. It's a slap in the face of movie producers who think you have to appeal to modern beauty trends to make a visually exciting film. One of the interviews I watched had the director talking about the rabbit hole of historical accuracy she went down, thinking about what kind of sheep could realistically be in the background of the shots. It's so extra but I love it so much.

Haven’t even watched the video but SO glad you made it. I feel like it captures Jane Austen’s realism-meets-satire absolutely perfectly. The music (including the folk), the costume, the colour grading, casting… everything. The script too! Ah man, my husband and I have watched it at least thirty times. I feel like it’s the kind of film that will age pretty well too.

I love the vocal music because it is reminiscent of English folksong and there's even a Christmas hymn in there at one point. It adds to the small-town and folksy feeling of the village and its people, and also roots the story in a very English tradition if that makes sense.

My favourite version of Emma...I've watched it at least 25 times. Every single scene has something magical and Johnny Flynn's portrayal of Mr. Knightley is a revelation. I don't worship at Jane Austen's altar (enjoy her books, but don't place her on a pedestal) so differences between the book and movie are often beneficial (such as the duet scene being between Mr. Knightley and Jane Fairfax rather than Mr. Churchill and Jane). I adore it!

@scottandgabeproductions
@scottandgabeproductions 2 года назад
That’s exactly how I feel. The Oscars don’t celebrate or reward filmmaking, they just give those awards to the highest bidder. Film shouldn’t be about the lavish suits or dresses or even the awards. It’s about a few crackheads filming shit and hoping it will be good. It’s about sharing your work with others, just for the hell of it. Well anyway sorry for the rant, I’m so glad you watched the movie, and I hope you enjoyed my video! I hope you have a nice day and an even more wonderful life!

How did this not sweep the Oscars?? I couldn’t agree more, EMMA. is perfection. It is impeccably cast- the astonishing Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn!! Be still my heart. Mia Goth, Bill Nighy. And as you say the score is ****ing amazing. Astonishing work by Isobel Waller-Bridge. All honor and glory to first time director Autumn de Wilde, her film is exquisite, delicious, nearly flawless- as Miss Bates says, “excellently contrived, nothing wanting!” The script by Eleanor Cattall. The production design, the costumes, the food…this EMMA IS a masterpiece. I want more!

Not since "Amadeus" in 1983 have I watched a film repeatedly like "Emma.". This is , what I call, a complete film, in that, on all levels, it excels. The soundtrack is the perfect companion to the stunning cinematography, set, design, costume design, sound editing and, of course, an infectious cast that had me laughing from beginning to end. "Emma" is meant to be a satirical comedy and this is the first version who gets Austen's intentions. The other filmed versions of "Emma" are good and worthy, but this brilliant piece of cinema.

I really appreciated how the music kept driving home the class of MOST of Highbury by going back to working and traditional songs as soon as we look outside at Highbury. It's like the music is reminding us that we're only seeing a tiny specific group of them, and the larger group isn't like that.

There’s a video on RU-vid somewhere looking at the costumes in detail, showing in extreme close up that the buttonholes are hand-sewn, there was that much attention to detail. Have watched Emma. over and over and over again since it came out in 2020. Watched it again just yesterday and discovered even more exquisite gems, the latest being the scene after the picnic where Emma’s by the window. Her father, played so divinely by Bill Nighy, slowly walks in and bears witness to his baby girl ‘s misery. Bill Nighy’s performance in this one scene alone goes beyond words, even as he himself says not a single word. Watch his facial expressions, how they evolve as Emma describes her behavior; he speaks so eloquently just with his face, his body language, his small hand movements…and finally his decision to just keep Emma company. So full of empathy even in his apparent helplessness to do anything. Exquisite. One of the best scenes ever filmed.

EMMA is my favorite Austen, and although I felt that the beautiful subplots of the novel were very vaguely touched in this adaptation (the Churchill/Fairfax story is hardly there!) I cannot but adore what Autumn De Wilde did here. This is unquestionably the most beautiful Regency film ever made. It is breathtaking frame by frame, and managed to make me swoon even though I know the story by heart. It's an EMMA designed for the Instagram generation, and it succeeds at every turn. The characters feel so lonely despite the richness and beauty of the world around them; a contrast that in my opinion is storytelling at its finest. Yes, this is one of my favorite movies ever.

Just wanted to let you know that Anya Taylor-Joy's name is actually pronounced (Anne-ya) not (Ahn-ya). I always hear people mispronouncing it (which is fair, she hasn't addressed it in a major interview) and I don't want her to end up like Saoirse Ronan having to tell people how to say her name in every single public appearance. This is such a good analysis, I adore this movie as well. It definitely would've been so much more successful if it wasn't for Covid

139) Pride and Prejudice (2005) 146) Emma (2020) Not one of my favorite movies of all time, but very, very good. All the Emma's before were so useless and Emma was even under Sense and Sensibility, until this version came out and suddenly the movies are now in the same order as the books by Jane Austen for me. NONSENSE! It is not a patch on on the 2005 BBC DVD production, first seen on TV in 1972. Much as I admire Bill Nighy, his Mr Woodward really does not cut the mustard. Nor does Mr Knightly, he is much too young, and is completely out of place. And the BBC's Emma is much more unlikeable, exactly as Austen intended. The entire BBC production, and its characters, is much more rounded and deeper, the 202 version shallow in comparison
