Fans have always been fickle. I still remember really well that I was discussing with fans online who claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo was a flat track bully who never showed up in big games. That discussion went completely quiet after he started scoring more frequently against big teams. The attention was then seemingly directed towards Messi, who also criticized for disappearing against the big teams, despite having been decisive in some big games at that point in time. That all changed when he trashed Arsenal in the CL and started scoring more frequently against big teams. That cycle of criticism seems to have been directed towards Haaland nowadays, and I'm really not sure if that's a testament to how high profile he's become, and that people are looking for reasons to tear him down, or if people genuinely think he's only capable of playing well when the stakes are low.
