Thanks for posting this - I've gone back and started to watch the full interview! I definitely relate to Juan's point here. Learning a language isn't at all like learning maths or physics. It took me a while to appreciate that, precisely because my background is in the sciences and my normal approach to learning something is to focus on the logical relationships and practice production rather than input. It took me quite a while to settle into my current, much more productive routine that's far heavier on input. Also - and I have to say this - I hugely admire you in this interview, Shane! Kudos. This is an excellent demonstration of someone maintaining a conversation in a foreign language despite not being word perfect. I can hear some mistakes you're making but... who cares? You're communicating effectively with a native speaker, having a fascinating conversation about an interesting topic, and putting the whole thing up on RU-vid to boot. That's just about the definition of a win in language learning. That example by itself is incredibly motivating. Keep doing what you're doing :)

Yes. Absolutely correct. I’m one of those people that has tried to learn languages for many years, but always hit that proverbial “I’m so sorry, I’m stupid” wall. It took a trip to Italy to inspire me and motivate me enough to work at hurdling that repressive wall. Shane, your channel popped up in my feed as a result of my efforts to find good, quality content for learning Italian. Thanks for your insights. You’ve got a new subscriber. After Italian, Spanish is next. 😊

I am Polish living in usa.So at age 62 already being super fluid at English and of course being a master of my native Polish I started learning Spanish so Your channel is really interesting. Love that You reached out to Juan and Linguriosa.Elena is simply phenomenal and Juan is great with real comedic talent. I hope Your channel grows,by the way I am in awe of Your Spanish.

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo en cuanto al aprendizaje de un idioma. El sistema clàsico de enseñar una lengua extranjera parte de adquirir conocimientos principalmente gramáticales y va así de un aspecto gramátical a otro dando por supuesto que así se aprende un idioma. Aprender un idioma requiere mucha interacción entre hablar, entender, leer y escribir, aprendizaje de reglas y vocabulario, práctica de estructuras y de la pronunciación. El sistema educativo nos somete a evaluarnos constantemente, Cuàl es la base de lo evaluable? Los conocimientos teóricos que se pueden reducir a correcto y incorrecto - sin matices en medio. Es como en las elecciones. Sólo cuenta la suma de los votos - no los motivos, las objeciones, las dudas etc. Como los estudios filológicos en cambio van mucho más allá del estudio de la lengua, se entra por allí en áreas que vuelven a ser mejor evaluables desde los criterios socio-políticos , historicos-literarios etc. El aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero tiene demasiadas facetas para hacerle justicia al estudiante con sus respectivos intereses, enfoques, capacidades etc. Habría que dar las notas en base de qué modo el alumno consigue sacar lo óptimo de sus propias capacidades en lugar de los conocimientos establecidos.

Juan tiene razón. Si un estudiante tenga demasiado miedo de cometer errores, no puede progresar. Hay que hacerlo más que siempre parar a pensar en ello. Los errores son una parte necesaria del aprendizaje de idiomas.

Soy de Italia y confirmo lo que dice el profesor. En octubre he hablado en inglés en Nueva York sin preocuparme de la gramática. Y todo me comprendían sin problemas.

Bien dicho Juan, ¡estoy de acuerdo 110%! Empezé estudiando español hace un año más o menos y casi nunca he estudiado la gramática. La odio y ¡no es necesario! Muchas gracias por tus vídeos, cursos y libros, los me ayudan muchísimo. 👌

Estoy de acuerdo la práctica es esencial y errores también pero las reglas son muy importantes. En la universidad más práctica es necesario. Hablo de mi propia experiencia.

Soy extranjera en Panamá. Estoy aprendiendo el español a través la imersión. La semana pasada hablaba con el dueño de mi casita porque tuve que cambiar una "bomba". Fuí a la tienda para comprarla sino nadie en la tienda subía "bomba". Después de consultar mi diccionario, encontré la "bombilla". Pués, tuve que aprender por el método practico. Yo continuaba hacer los errores en español. ¡Así es la vida! 🇵🇦

Estoy absolutamente de acuerdo contigo. Yo dejé de trabajar en el cole por la misma razón.

Cometar un error es normal pero desafortunamente ayer en un canal de chatear un hombre me dijo que hablo muy mal Espanol y que soy una idiota.

Me acuerdo con Juan. "¡No comete errores!" y los estudiantes no quieren hacer errores cuando están hablando español, es fácil. Entonces, simplemente no hablan. Es trágico en verdad.

If he the professor, why couldn't he you his own methods and get better result from his students? Or get permission from administration?

I like Juan, but I couldn't listen to him for long. He has so much energy that sometimes it feels like a frenzy when he talks, and it exhausts me quickly just listening to him talk.
