There are only a few things that all bass players agree on:
Flea belongs on every Top 10 list.
Jaco only needed four strings.
And every bassist HAS to try a Jazz Bass.
Almost everything else is up for debate…well, almost.
In today’s video we catch up with LA session bassist Nicole Row to discuss her awesome bass collection, from her modded P Bass to the Jazz Bass she bought for her gig with Panic! at the Disco.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

It's so cool to see Nicole Row on Scott's channel. Such a gifted player, badass on so many levels. I too own the Marcus Miller Jazz Bass, which is 20 years old now & aged beautifully. Nice vintage yellow hue, and boy does the whole instrument resonate (must have to do with the wood becomer drier over time, while being played). I really recommend to check out Nicole's work with Panic, there are some youtube films out there of concerts with Nicole playing, amazing. Please, Nicole do more for SBL!

I agree. A Passive J Bass. Although, a P/J configuration would fulfill most needs 😎 Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
@musenw8834
@musenw8834 2 года назад
Yeah, a Squier Affinity PJ. you retain that studio mix sound + you can play scooped mids of a jazz bass. you just won't have the jazz neck pickup tone. which comes close. you might as well play a passive J for the heaviest genres like metalcore instead of just pop music. These days you'll see some metalcore bassists hold a jazz and probably a darkglass with them, if not a bass from schecter, spectre or ibanez

J is a far better choice than a PJ. A J can easily sound like a P (with a bit of hum) but a PJ doesn't at all sound like a J.

I owned a Marco Jazz Bass and I really tried to like it, but there was nothing about it that I liked, it was a well constructed bass but somehow nothing on it felt right to me, so I traded it. Ironically I picked that over the Marcus Miller Jazz, which she also played on this clip. The Marco was really well built but a Jazz Bass design I really couldn't connect with.

Loved the bass tour you gave in this video! Also loved that you play w Panic (they're cool and I know another person in their tour band... pm for more). I loved your back-stories about the camping and recording sessions. I stayed at home and worked too much. Opportunities lost I guess. I am still working to be consistent on one of my 2 basses, but just for the love of the sounds it makes.

My passive J Bass is the most powerful weapon in my bass arsenal. Nothing quite like it in terms of versatility and tonal qualities. A fully open J Bass with rounds is the quintessential rock/punk bass tone, in my opinion. Rolling off the bridge pickup gets me into P Bass territory. You can get great funky slap tones, or thick thuddy jazz tones, or a solid rock tone all from the same instrument, without any sort of modifications. Versatility! The J Bass just works "out of the box". I never have to fight the instrument to make it sound good or play well, either.
@karthurhyer
@karthurhyer 2 года назад
I prefer the J . I can get a P bass sound by rolling off the bridge and a twist to the amp that i can't get with a P. Ironically I play a 86 Squire which i prefer to the Fender. 35 years playing, 7 other basses, and nothing beats my (much modified) Squire, believe me I don't understand why myself, must have gotten a magic one.

I was sans j bass for 20 years. Now I can’t afford one, so I built a parts j bass with allparts neck and fender Mexico body. And original pickups from my first J. I feel complete now. Nice history and to know a person with cool basslines! The one with natural wood finish has great harmonics! I never liked JBs, my first bass was an PJ and I always used the P thinking the J pickup has a problem. This "melted" body style and fingerboard with only 20 frets also push me away to have one. Mine preferences are Ps, SGs, and RKs, and love short scales. But I know their importance in the music history and their iconic bass players that use this model. It's an easy bass to play slap, the thin neck it's confortable and has no neck dive. Their normal sound is bad to me but a fretless became very decent. Every bassist has to TEST a J-bass, but to own one, unfortunetly is out of my plans hahaha

It was amazing and i don't even think they make neck throughs anymore. It was brand new for $1600 and to this day i KICK my self in the arse for not buying it that day! It was gone when i went back. If it was that cheap it was probably more like 30 years ago. It had that organic look and tone like Nicole's bass. What a pair those two F basses would make. So that bass in this vid is awesome. I don't get why she's so keen on the tiny nut widths. She has great technique so the size of her hands doesn't really matter. A thin nut width only really gives you an advantage if you play with your palm on the back of the neck. I used to love jazz necks before I got my left hand technique together, but since then they just feel so cramped up by the nut. I guess it must just be personal preference.

What are your thoughts on fretless? I’ve always been a big Mick Karn fan…

i love the j bass, but unlike her I have massive arachnid hands and a j bass feels tiny to me, a p bass feels better with the wider chunkier neck, but now i just play a 5 string gibson eb bass and its perfect! i can get both jazz and percision like tones with it and its completely passive! totally underrated bass imo

Nicole, go get yourself a Yamaha BB2000. You'll never take the jazz bass out of its case again 😁
