I planted golden rod & aster together because I like seeing purple & gold. I had no idea what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised! My aster glows in the moonlight. I plan to make a moonlight garden now!

Thank you for making your videos. I am a new homeowner with one acre some of it wooded and I discovered the asters and goldenrod this autumn. My goal is to introduce native, pollinator pathway friendly plants over time, and reclaim the lawn as garden.

I have a decent sized property too. I stopped mowing and tons of natives popped up on their own.

Big agree on Fireworks golden rod. Was a winner in Chicago Botanical Garden trials. Very well behaved. Planted on both sides of our front steps and its a special experience to sit between them on a fall day.
@BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists
We use both of these across North America. Along with some of our very long blooming species, these two keep the world going right into winter. This is a critical time for the survival of wildlife!

I love the information in your videos! I just planted some plugs this fall (northern DE), including many natives like goldenrod and asters. Excited to see how they grow up! I have showy, blue stemmed, and little moss sunshine goldenrod, and old field aster, blue wood and New England asters.

I wanted the Fireworks goldenrod for years, even collected seeds from a municipal garden bed but never managed to germinate it even after overwintering it. 😑 As for asters, I got the New England variety and it has been great. Too great even as seeds dispersed and now I have two huge clumps of asters that are "unfortunately" taking space for other plants I want to grow. I'll have to move thm somehere else. Personal aster tip: you can pinch it throughout the seaasons so it'll branch out and create even more flowers! It is also very easy to propagate it with cuttings. I got two aster plants that way! I highly recommend using a commercial root hormone to maximize the odds that the cutting will pick up after you put it in the ground. 👍 That was my cool garden story.

I've been really enjoying your channel, lots of great information. This is so timely as I just ordered some seeds to start growing native plants and they included some goldenrod and asters. 😊

Lol, yesterday I watched the video you guys put out on asters and left a comment about how much I love seeing the Goldenrod and aster growing with eachother. Then today I found this one 😂 great video and I totally endorse people growing as much Goldenrod and purple aster as possible, the pollinators adore it and a field of the 2 is truly a magical sight! Plus Goldenrod can be used edibly/medicinally, amazing plant, one of my favorites for sure!

Had a question about aster and goldenrod because of your initial suggestion of putting them in the yard. If I put marigolds in my yard, they can have blooms out for months. But if I put irises out, they will only bloom for a week and nothing for a year. I was curious to ask where in that spectrum of bloom length aster and goldenrod would lie? And is it possible to manipulate them such to be able to keep a longer bloom length? I think people don't think about bloom lengths much when they pick flowers. But it would make sense too, plus feed the bees longer.

@dankeener3307 8 месяцев назад
Asters and goldenrod bloom up to 6 weeks in the fall. I don’t think you can manipulate them into blooming longer, but if you cut them back in June they will flop less.

How do you tell alpine aster in the mountains from chamomile? They look very similar. (And doesn't help that there's other things that look like both of them also like Feverfew). Thanks.

What is the name of the goldenrod?
@dankeener3307
@dankeener3307 8 месяцев назад
“Fireworks” was one that forms a well behaved clump, though it will expand and need divided in 5-6 years depending on how big you’re ok with. The Canada goldenrod is great in wild areas where they can fight introduced and invasive species.
