Honestly, all the controversy for this show was so mild and easily fixable, that if that VA hadn't made that video it would have blown over by now. By making such a condescendingly smug video where she talked down to people with valid criticisms instead of letting the PR team step in and clarify that the broken Spanish is gringo slang and the main characters are second-gen, she basically tossed a firecracker on an easily cleanable gas spill and now Disney has to try and put it out before it burns the whole show to the ground before it even premieres.

A big part about latin identity is how incredibly varied spanish can be among spanish speaking countries. In Mexico, we have thousands of words that people in Colombia either don't or use differently, same in Chile, same in Peru, Argentina, Spain, etc. And all of this countries take pride in their unique ways of speaking the same language If she thinks spanish isn't latin american culture, she cleraly doesn't know her roots or actuvely disregards them

Colombian here, and I can attest to that. One word I learned from my Mexican pals was 'ahínco'. As in, 'hacer algo con ahínco'. Another two were 'nahual' and 'guajolote', which I would've never guessed mean 'warlock' and 'turkey' respectively. And even then, there's some nuance. A Mexican 'nahual' does not line up perfectly with the English understanding of a 'warlock'. There's a lot of cultural nuance. You're also right about different ways of speaking. If someone says 'güey' and 'órale', you know they're Mexican. If they say 'che' instead of 'oye', pronounce 'll' and 'y' like an English 'sh', and use the pronoun 'vos' instead of 'tú' while having just the slightest Italian accent, you know they're Argentinian. If you tell them a crazy story, and they respond with 'Qué gonorrea, parce', Colombian. If they talk really fast about a 'wea' and then ask you '¿sí cachái?', Chilean. If they speak with a funny lisp, call you 'uncle', and use 'vosotros' instead of 'ustedes', Spanish.

This VA is a prime example of "making a mountain out of a mole hill". She took an issue, and not only made the issue more visible by talking about it, but amplified it by proceeding to act on the "moral highground" and begin to condemn those don't like the show, even throwing out the "its for children" fallacy to where "if its for children, it can't be criticized" argument.

If the creators had come out and emphasized that the reason the grammar is wrong is because the protagonist struggles with the grammar, I don’t think people would be as mad. I mean after all, there are a lot of kids that relate to that struggle. I’m half Costa Rican and learning Spanish has always been difficult. And because it’s always been difficult, feeling apart of the culture has been hard. I know a lot of kids can connect to that. If they had just left it there and not had any other people say anything, maybe they could have gotten away with it. But to double down, insult the language, not apologize and be so fucking smug about the feedback like the main actress, all it makes me want to say is fuck this shit. I’m out.

I think the issue here is that everything looks bad out of context. For us Latin Americans, who live outside of the US, this looks low-key disrespectful to Latin-American culture. Yes, the incorrect Spanish sparked the controversy, but everything else in the intro also looked kinda bad: yellow filter usually associated with Mexico in American productions, "Terremoto Heights" - terremoto meaning earthquake - feeling like an insulting jab at a culture with very negative experiences with earthquakes, the aforementioned Cuquita, sneakers on the power lines sometimes meaning either someone was killed nearby or the area being drug dealers territory, etc. We didn't know the show took place in the US actually, it wasn't obvious enough, and the response of the voice actress, combined with the badly indicated sarcasm of the creator, made everything worse and worse. Now, most of Latin America have no idea of the real reasons the show's intro is how it is, they just think it was made by "clueless gringos" who didn't even bother researching into actual Latin American culture, when actually the culture being represented was americas with Hispanic heritage and extended latino/american families inspired by the creator's own experience. Staff should definitely be forbidden of responding to controversy because it never works, it always makes it worse.

You got the point. I'm mexican, and this week I've seen angry people at this show, because they still don't get what the show is about. Looks like they didn't see the Interstate highway sign at the beginning, suggesting that the show takes place in the USA. My fellow hispanoamericans understood the show was taking place in some Hispanic speaking country, like México, especially for the yellowish-sepia filter featured in a lot of Hollywood productions, when the scene is taking place in Mexico. And when they saw the sign reading "Earthquake Heights" that was directly insulting. Because in Mexico and other hispanic american countries, earthquakes are big catastrophes. And trying to represent "Hispanic" culture with a city called Earthquake, is like some sort of insulting joke. So most people that speak spanish think that they tried to portray a mexican city instead of a city from the USA. And that's why they got mad. And instead of explaining the misunderstanding, the VA replied in a condescending way, trying to "put a kid in his place". And everything just got worse.

The video mentions "Stereotypes are real"... Thats the point, the bad reaction is exactly for that, people know what is real, the problem comes when in a universe of possibilities Disney chooses the worst ones to depict instead of the nicer stereotypes. There is a lot of foreigners shows (Japan, USA, Canada) making mockery of ugly stereotypes of Latin America (some ones really hurt) and we laugh about that because is cruel black humor, the problem with Disney comes when that show is not about satire or cruel humor, is supposed to be regular family friendly humor.

The show would look so much better with some Latino spice in the art style.
@TheDragShot
@TheDragShot 11 месяцев назад
@@Skechy3603 most Latinos don't care about stereotypes when they're played as jokes or satire. Some famous examples are Speedy Gonzalez and La Pulga. The problem here is that from the looks of it, the stereotypes in this series won't be used for satire or comedic effect, they're going to be played straight as features of the characters in the show. At that point we're no longer talking about jokes, and while we may easily take the banter from other Latinos, the moment some foreigner tries to pull the same stunt on us, that's when things get _ugly_ for real.

@@mothmadi_ Yeah, I really hoped this show could connect the hispanicamerican communities with the chicano community. Or like they call themselves, "latinx" or "latine" like said in the video. But with how things are going, I don't know if this show will get cancelled or something. I was born and raised in the north of Mexico, like 5 hours away from the border with USA. Also, on summers, I was that "Primo" that went to visit their cousins at USA. So I can get a lot of references and can understand until some point what they wanted to show. But what makes me feel upset is that the VA went so mad for a little correction coming from a random spanish native speaker with a PP of Lionel Messi. Instead of just saying "Sorry but that's how I used to say it because I barely speak spanish" or something. Another thing that this video didn't mention is how the translation of some names might be innappropiate for some hispanic countries. Like the little girl called Cookie-ita or Cuquita, in some countries it refers to female genitals. And having a little girl called like that is really disturbing. Other girl, called gordita, translates to "Little fat girl", which Idk if they did it on purpose, but that also seems like a lack of understanding or something, from my point of view.

And maybe it grew into an endearing phrase that she remembers saying back in the day. As a Latin American person, I used to have A LOT of broken English as a kid. Like saying "imprimido" instead of "impreso" (means "printed"). I wouldn't be surprised if later on they make an episode that mentions that "Oye Primos" is incorrect and it's actually "Oigan" because "Oye" is singular. The main character is a young girl, after all, it makes sense if she speaks broken Spanish because she's either young and doesn't care or just because she doesn't know any better. I dislike some of the character designs, but I do hope it turns out to be a good show for the people who DID just want to make a good show.

as a Mexican, let me explain why is it so important to use "Oigan" instead of "Oye", "Oye" is singular for "You" on a rude tone, you should only use "Oye" when it's an emergency or it's that important to disrespect somebody, while "Oigan" is plural for "You" but instead of being rude is just referencial to a group of people to guide them, if the author of the song had any experience with talking latinamerican spanish (very different from Spainard Spanish) should had notice this detail, but instead they just mock Latinamerican culture as a whole, but belive me this is just the point of the iceberg, if you read the lyrics you can read the following names: - Gordita (means "Fatty") - Chacha (common slang for a housekeeper, and the reality of these individuals is virtually hell) - Cuquita (on Spainard Spanish means "cute" but... this isn't a Spainard Spanish reference, on Latinamerican Spanish that's basically "Pussy" like the Slang for sex) The character design is gross but that's just my POV, and I belive that the only people who would see this series would be the ones that had no contact with Latinamericans at all, probably for the best because if we consider the intro has the intentions and quality of the entire series then we can expect a lot and I mean a lot of missconceptions of an entire culture that will end up causing some severe social issues, hope this either get fixed or that it will not have an impact at all

I can see where this is going. The show won’t be horrible, but it won’t be good either. The people who like it will try to defend it as a masterpiece instead of just liking it. The people who hate it will be extremely vocal about hating it. The people who think it’s mid will be lumped in with the people who hate it by the defensive side. Based on how they acted after the intro backlash, the creators/voice actors will pull a Seth Rogen from Santa Inc., and call all the haters racist and misogynistic even though the vast majority aren’t, and the creators are actually doing a bad job. And EVERYONE will forget that this is a CHILDREN’S SHOW, and they won’t get the opinion of the actual target audience. God I hate the internet.

I think another problem I had with the show was the marketing itself. It was marketed as show for a person from a culture particularly outside USA I mean it is except from one glaring problem, the main character herself. The fact that we are surrounded by Latino people is good BUT the MC herself is what we call a "diaspora". A term used for people of a culture who grew up outside their culture. If they only advertised this as such, I would have little to no problem with it, but alas. Its like me as an SEAsian received a show about a SEAsian kid but instead I got a SEA kid who grew up in California instead and claims what he's doing is my culture. Kind of insulting, innit? Dont get me started on what the VA of Tater did as well as the term "Latin X" (which mind you is now considered a slur or an invasive language) Also for all Diasporas like your friend, its not up to other native people to decide whether you are a fake (insert race or country here) people will think what they want. But what you should do is instead of crying afoul about how you cant relate at all, you instead at least respect, learn, and mingle with the culture. Learn basic language! Cook and eat our food! Learn about your history! Because you know, it feels nice and heartwarming when a diaspora willingly tries to learn the culture they are supposef to be in.

I grew up in America with my brother and my Puerto Rican mom. My Peruvian dad occasionally visit whenever he's free. From 5 to 10, I had no idea what they're saying in Spanish and both speak different in their own take on Spanish. But I understand based on gestures and few English they used. Now, I can speak and understand both languages. 10:02 I have been there too. When I came to Puerto Rico at age 10, no one wants me in elementary school because I have Asperger's and I can't understand Spanish. Mom fought and lecture them until they caved but still try to find cause to get me expell, like how I hold my spoon or when the bullies bothers me or when I thought school ended and accidentally skip half of the class. What's hard for me is that no one believes I'm Puerto Rican because my accent is American like so they always call me gringo and I was deeply confused. Nowadays I'm now accepted that I am Puerto Rican Peruvian with Jersey accent, through and through.

That's something that is done by having a diverse group of people in the decision making booth; having people from different backgrounds helps eliminate most of those issues, and with this show, it seems there is no easily accessible way to see who worked on the show besides the voice actors, and the creator themselves.
