Why Everyone Is Switching Their Smart Home To Shelly For Alexa

A Smart Home that doesn't require a hub, that works with Alexa and Google Home, BUT it works locally without an Internet connection!
This video is sponsored by Shelly, all opinions are my own.
Shelly is the first consumer based Wifi Smart Home product that works locally on your network as well as on the cloud without any firmware changes. Some Sonoff Smart Home products are capable of this, but they are far less consumer friendly, and Shelly has FINALLY bridged the gap between total nerd and average consumer.
These products work with Alexa on your Amazon Echo, and also on Google Home just by installing the Shelly skill in the app, but if you want to control them locally then there is HTTP and MQTT support too right out of the box. Shelly can be flashed with Tasmota and other firware too if you are really paranoid so there is something here for everyone.
There is a Shelly Home assistant integration, a Shelly Smartthings device handler and even unofficial firmware for Apple Homekit. This is the most versatile set of Smart Home products on the market today.
They are brighter than Philips Hue, Dimmer than Philips Hue and Smarter than Philips Hue.

Happy Saturday everyone! Shelly have told me that they have an upcoming Wifi motion sensor with a 5 year battery life! With modern routers now able to handle more Wifi devices I'm wondering if this is a turning point. The advantages of Zigbee (ooh the Zigbee TM) are falling away one at a time: battery life for sensors and local connectivity could soon be moot points. I'm looking forward to reviewing more of Shelly's stuff soon :) Shelly have some awesome bulbs, but my absolute favourite is the giant Shelly Vintage G125. You can buy it, or any of their other bulbs at the following link: shop.shelly.cloud/shelly-vintage-g-wifi-smart-home-automation-1/?paulhibbert

Checkout bigclive on youtube, his review of the Phillips 'dubai' led bulb that lasts 25x longer and uses less power. Sadly only available in Dubai, not saying it reinforces their corporate greed narrative, but why not make it generally available ? 🤔🤦‍♂️ www.mea.lighting.philips.com/consumer/dubai-lamp

A WiFi motion sensor is a great idea. I wonder if there will be a several second delay while the device wakes up and attaches to the WiFi network? That would mean that although the sensor is fine for detecting intrusion the delay would make it less useful for turning the lights on as you enter a room.

Paul, thanks for talking about “dimness” as well as brightness. I recently brought a load of colour GU10s from Lidl following your recent review. Whilst they were easy to pair, control and the brightness and colour saturation was far better than other brands I’ve bought, their “dimness” was a problem. My young daughter likes to have the landing light on so that she’s not scared if she wakes up in the middle of the night. That said, the rest of the family needs to get a good night’s sleep and unfortunately without turning the colour to red I can’t get the Lidl bulbs dim enough. Downside is that the landing now glows “allegedly” like a house of ill repute at night! Just for the record I also have Hombli colour GU10s - difficult to pair, lose pairing frequently and flicker terribly until they’ve warmed up. The Shelly bulbs seem great but you didn’t mention colour saturation at all in the review - also they get a negative point for having the same name as my ex-wife! 😉 .... addendum: also it would be useful to also say whether the bayonet fitting is standard or oversize - I’ve bought a few brands of GU10s that just don’t fit into recessed spotlight holders without standing proud in the ceiling - especially true for fire rated fittings.

Hi Paul. I started my smart home by using ZWave, started buying some ZigBee, went to the Sonoffs and then found these jewels. Ever since I installed my first Shelly (2.5 to control a shutter) I was amazed. These Shelly are European, follow European safety rules and are almost the same price as their sonoff's equivalent. I am now on a quest to exchange all my modules to Shelly. Nice that you're starting to review them!

Absolutely love the Shelly one for just about anything....to include behind the switch for the Sink garbage disposal, and when you tell "she that shall not be named" to turn it on it will run for 15 secs and turn itself off, or turn any dumb garage door opener smart; all from within the device and not even needed to rely on Home Assistant (which Shelly also integrates very well with as you described). Great video Paul! Full of great information, at the same time as being as funny as always; even though I might be getting He-Man nightmares soon.

I want to put a bunch of nice colourful lights in my garden. Of course being on philips hue i looked but they are so expensive and shit.... lol what would you recommend? 2. With all the new smart devices being wifi..... for the very high users of smart home devices... do you think more and more people who may not be network savy running out of IP addresses for the devices. Because most people on there home routers will be running DHCP one they reach the limit of there ip group they may not know and not know how to solve the problem? Hope you hear back soon or see a video or two on these topics..... Regards Brodie

Finally!!! I was wondering why I never saw any Shelly products on your channel. I am using Shelly products for more than one and a half years now and I am very happy with them. OK, for about half of the products you have to fiddle with the mains, which is not your thing I believe, but it is really worth while. I started with the Shelly 2.5 for my roller shutters, which are brilliant as they fit into the wall behind my normal control switches. Then I use a lot of Shelly 1 for light fixtures and switchable power sockets. Main advantage is: even if you have no internet or network active, you can still use your conventional switches to operate your lights, shutters, heaters or whatever is connected to a Shelly. I even have a bit more specialized usage case. My sister is travelling a lot, also for extended time periods. Although she has an alarm system installed in her house, she wanted something like a presence simulation using her lights. So, I was able to link my Shellies to her Shellies (via http requests). Eg when I switch on the lights in the kitchen, her kitchen lights do the same. When I watch TV, a TV simulator runs in her house etc etc. It is definitly worth while to look at their products (No, I am not getting a commission from them, I am just a very satisfied user of these products). Support has also been great, the App is very good, the product line has been expanded a lot and functionality is constantly improved.

That's genius! I assume you have a VPN between the two houses? Sounds like an awesome setup. I will be looking at more shelly stuff for definite!

For future reference this channel is filled with innuendo and bleeped out swear words. If those things are gonna cause discomfort for you then no, it isn't suitable for your kids. I think you should consider the likelihood however that your kids won't understand the innuendo anyway. All they're gonna see is an excited light bulb because they have no point of reference.

Shelly is so nice and ease to use. I renovated an old house and updated the wiring. I replaced all swichests and used shelly 1. Shelly 2.5 and dimmers to control almost every switch or socket. Did I mention that I used momentary switches... 😁😄👍 I can really recommend shelly. The only wish I have is... shelly please please make a hub so we can use the shelly app with webcore instead of smartthings. The app is soooooo well done and good loocking I can't wait for them to keep innovating the app I'd love to handle complex routines with shelly and get my "old" z wave / zisbee ensors integrated. Imagine the camera integrations. Can't wait 🤪

Another great video. Smart bulbs are great if you want multiple colours etc but what's the best way to manage the issue of people turning them off with a dumb wall switch? I was looking at Sonoff Mini R2 smart switches because they are 2 way. Any chance you could do a review of them? Their WiFi or Zigbee so no need to upset anyone - unless you want to 🙂

Bought them for the “dimminess” :D and they are much better in that sense than the ikea ones I had before. Just wondering, you mention in the video about the gentle wake up like in Philips Hue and I cannot find it. Does anyone know how to configure gentle wake up so the bulbs go from 0% to 100% brightness in 30 mins during mornings for example?

Welcome to the Shelly family. I've been using the Shellys for a while and I can say that the products are great! The range of functions is unique! they work directly or indirectly with all platforms. Directly via skills for example Alexa, Google, Smartthings etc. or indirectly via webhooks with Homey, ifttt etc. The limits of the possibilities are only up to your imagination.
