Why EVERYONE should have a pocket radio close to hand 

You hit the nail on the head Fred. I have several of these small radios and I have an emergency pack sack that I grab if I am travelling in the woods or heading on an adventure. It can also be used on AM as a compass if you know where the radio towers re in relation to your position. The ferrite bar locks the signal in well when it is perpendicular to the tower.

I have just bought a Tecsun 990. Hardly a couple of quid but it sounds superb and covers AM, SW, FM, USB & LSB. It's the best toy I have bought in years.

I bought one for going to the TT in 06 I now have found that I'm starting to collect older radios, it's great fun sat in my shed listings to the airplanes, and the older ones just appeel to me, and yes I still have that cheap tiny 7 pound one that kept me informed of the race and it goes on all my Solo camping trips.

Radio still my go to when serious news is breaking. AM has such a comforting 'warm' tone for speech based radio and it will be a sad day if this mode is ever phased out. Those pre internet days before instant global communication, when your only contact with the wide world was tuning into those mysterious broadcasts from all over on a short wave receiver were amazing. Especially during the cold war era, with those 'numbers stations' broadcasting out of the Eastern Bloc ( probably a topic for another video in itself). There are still some strange transmissions like ' over the horizon radar' and i can easily receive the buzzer on 4625khz most of the year.

I carry a baofeng uv5r with me everywhere that does fm receive too as well as having vhf and uhf so its handy to have incase of emergencys also 👌😊 great video as always fred 😀might have to add this to my bag as a backup 😁

It's very important to have a way to get news and information. There are several good quality small radios 📻 that are available but I suggest getting a AM/FM/SW radio so you can get local radio stations and stations several states away and even from other countries.

I agree Fred, I have a XHDATA-D808 radio receiver only, which has AM, 1 to 30MHZ HF/SW, SSB upper and lower , FM, MW, and MW + air band! A good radio. Plus a wind up FM/AM.

When Facebook and other websites went down it caused no end of problems with my TV.

The best small radio you can get is the Hanrongda K603 ! It's the Retekess V-115 but with bluetooth and the same price or cheaper ! Hanrongda is the original factory name for Retekess & Tivdio.

That's why you should carry of you walk bottle of water; whistle , torch , lighter and analogue watch ? Not to much you can secrete in a bag ? Fully charged phone but never rely on it knowing how to identify these items if out walking can save your life ? Keep safe and well Fred ❤👍loving you vlogs

Exactly why I run my shack on 12v battery and solar. Power outages are fantastic - my noise floor drops and I can hear weak signals! lol

I have a small Grundig am/fm/sw radio at the ready.

i still have my 1970's Philco am radio and my 1980's Sony with am and fm. :)

Nice a little radio i have 3 grundigs poket one A slightly bigger one amd the satelite 800 they had teamed up with drake ham radio to come up with the 800

I have the Realistic AM/FM radio you pictured Fred (Model 12-715) which I bought new in 1987! It still works perfectly and gets used every now and then. And yes we have had the mobile phone networks crash due to Telco issues and lost towers in the severe bushfires we get here in VK land. So it is excellent advice to have easy access to legacy technology when the excretia hits the rotational blades!

The Degen DE13 is a great little radio for these purposes. It’s solar powered, crank powered, internal battery or use normal batteries. FM, MW and SW, all decent reception 👍🏼

Hi Fred , curious as to what work you do now seeing this video , anyhow got lots of little radios , right up to the modern digital item and old analog stuff , even got one in me bedroom, I use , we came from a time before facecrack and mobile phones , I’d live ok without em ,,, cheers buddy Shane

a lot of mobile phones have a built in am/fm radio. The headphones need pluged in,but can flick the loud speaker on. A lot less sore on the battery than a radio app,that wont work if the signal is down anyways.

Hi Fred. I have been messing around with an SDR (picked up some of the 305 lot earlier today). Used to be on CB in 80's and looking to maybe get a new radio and get back into it. I'm in Hoddesdon not a million miles from you and was wondering if there were any FB pages dedicated to this area? Hate FB at best of times and having a hard time finding anything.
