In this video, John MacArthur explains why he loves to preach through the Bible verse-by-verse. He talks about the strengths of expositional preaching and explains why it's the only form of preaching that nourishes both the preacher and the audience.
ABOUT TMS:
The Master’s Seminary exists to train men for pastoral ministry-to preach the Word of God, reach the world for Christ, and teach others to do the same. The Master's Seminary was founded in 1986 by John MacArthur, who now serves as chancellor of TMUS.

When I started doing Expository Bible Study on the Gospel of Matthew in Bahasa Malaysia, I thought it's going to be 28 videos based on the 28 chapters. But to date, in my podcast, I'm in Matthew 22:1-14 and it's already the 115th episode! 😆 (and for the Gospel of Mark, chapter 10:17-22, 75 short videos). John MacArthur's influence 'ruin' my life; God changed my life 💪 Indeed, expository style is the most satisfied and rich style of preaching and Bible Study. Thanks John, GTY and TMS for your labours in the Word 😇

I understand what your saying. Its strange that you would feel ineffective with your message at the end of a sermon. But it a confession none the less and its been brought into the light. The act of bringing what is hidden into the light is a necessity for repentance and salvation. Praise God because a short testimony is effective where vigorous study can fall short.

May the Triune God raise up modern day MLJs, JEs, Pauls, Elijahs, JMacs, who will expound the whole counsel of God 1) to a church that prefers stories rather than "Thus says the Lord" expositions and 2) to a world in need of hearing the true nature of the Gospel of God.

Jeremiah 20:9 (KJV) Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But [his word] was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not [stay]. Psalm 39:3 (KJV) 3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: [then] spake I with my tongue, Job 32:18-20 (KJV) 18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me. 19 Behold, my belly [is] as wine [which] hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. 20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer. 1 Corinthians 9:16,17 (KJV) 16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! 17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation [of the gospel] is committed unto me.

Master's University, who owns this RU-vid channel and is the seminary of John MacArthur and Grace Community Church, offers a Bachelor's of Biblical Studies 100% online. They also offer a one-year certificate course in Biblical Studies that is on-campus, but I think they're looking into making that available online. Most every seminary offers certificate degrees in Biblical Studies, but keep in mind that the theology of seminaries differs. Pastor MacArthur stands heavily in the Reformed tradition of sound Biblical doctrine and the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture, and so Master's University faithfully reflects that. Reformation Bible College mentioned above is also very Biblically sound, as is Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, who offers two fully online certificates in Systemic and Historical Theology.

Is it wrong to read the same scripture until you understand what your reading before moving on, or should I read through and let it be understood as it comes?
@elijahrose7913
@elijahrose7913 3 года назад
Depends. Sometimes we need to focus on what we do understand and not let the other sections stop us from the whole. Once you understand the context enough then over time the unclear sections become clear. Also learning from those who have dug deep into scripture will most definitely bring understanding to your mind when you hear the verse exegeted properly. I've been going verse by verse with John on GTY.org and I've gained so much understanding from the verse by verse studies. I've gone through several book and I'm going through Revelation right now. I'm on chapter 14. I would advise looking up the verse that is unclear on the GTY website and listen to John explain what you don't understand.

Alicia, I know what you are going through. In college, I tried to read every reading assignment 3 times. I would read it once rather quickly. The second time through, I would use different colored highlighters and color the important words or paragraphs. Then the third time I would go over the highlighted areas. When reading the Bible, I use 3 different versions: KJV, Gideon, ESV. Although I rely most on the KJV, the other versions help me to understand better. I've found that I retain things more if I read things multiple times.

It will not "come" like I used to think. When Jesus mentioned we must be born of "water and spirit" I realized translators couldn't agree on what water meant. When I read from earlier scholars who knew the Greek and Hebrew of the Scriptures, I found out that "water and spirit" are not two things, but one. The spirit is an adjective that describes the noun "water" but with a lot of emphasis. Thus Christ said that unless a man is born of spiritual water (with a huge emphasis on spiritual), or "Spiritual, yes truly I say spiritual water." These Greek phrases have no comparables in English. But then again, the Hebrew and Greek had no punctuation. Neither language had superlatives like "very" either. In Hebrew "very red" was written as "red red." Anyway, I waited for God to reveal the "water and spirit" but I guess He expected me to go to the teachers who knew the nuances of the biblical languages. That means men from the 1800s.

Jeremiah 33:6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. Malachi 2:6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity. Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. True, he didn't, but I think he would say that the times when he's digging from the well of deposit n the moment is the Holy Spirit. He wouldn't deny the Holy Spirit operating through him to preach, but would probably place it more in Providential working than Miraculous "in the moment" workings.

No form of preaching is truly effective, except maybe in their own eyes, if the walk of the person doing the preaching does not match their talk.

I actually don't think this is always true. Paul said that some were preaching with the wrong motive and trying to compete with him, and he said that he rejoices despite the heart issue because Christ is preached. God can use even a poor example of a Christian to reach people with truth, but it definitely is better to have a righteous man proclaiming the truth.

Expository preaching is nothing but shooting the body in the foot if it comes at the expense of dependance upon the Holy Spirit for revelation. Brain explanation and analysis over Holy Spirit dependence is as dangerous to THE FAITH as any heretical onslaught of Satan. Building a castle of religion, a false kingdom rooted and grounded in pagan rationalism, is anathema to genuine faith.

The calvinist says that man is so depraved that he is unable to seek God and then their doctrine blames God for causing sin... John Calvin does.... “thieves and murderers, and other evildoers, are instruments of divine providence, being employed by the Lord himself to execute judgments which he has resolved to inflict.” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 1, Chapter 17, Paragraph 5) “The devil, and the whole train of the ungodly, are in all directions, held in by the hand of God as with a bridle, so that they can neither conceive any mischief, nor plan what they have conceived, nor how muchsoever they may have planned, move a single finger to perpetrate, unless in so far as he permits, nay unless in so far as he commands, that they are not only bound by his fetters but are even forced to do him service” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 1, Chapter 17, Paragraph 11) John Piper does..... "God . . . brings about all things in accordance with his will. In other words, it isn’t just that God manages to turn the evil aspects of our world to good for those who love him; it is rather that he himself brings about these evil aspects for his glory (see Ex. @-16; John 9:3) and his people’s good (see Heb. 12:3-11; James 1:2-4). This includes-as incredible and as unacceptable as it may currently seem-God’s having even brought about the Nazis’ brutality at Birkenau and Auschwitz as well as the terrible killings of Dennis Rader and even the sexual abuse of a young child . . . EVERY CALVINIST I HAVE TALKED TO DOES...... Jews thought salvation was only for them as the elect nation of God and could be achieved through works of the law. Calvinists think salvation is only for them as the Augustinian-elect of God. Ironically they both have the same elitist objections and can’t stand the fact that salvation is freely and genuinely offered to all through faith. Calvinists can even see the similarity between themselves and the Jews who boasted of their election. The irony is literally staggering. Calvinists are the 21st century Pharisees. Calvinism: Satan's way of unloading his responsibility for what he has done in this world and placing it on God.."God predetermined everything and caused everything including evil" If God predetermined everything..that means everything!! And so Calvinism places the blame of anything evil on God.. That is blasphemy..They follow a false god that is responsible for evil. I mean really?!? God gets glory by purposefully creating creatures that are intended to burn and suffer in unfathomably painstaking eternal torment as a way for Him to have glory?

He misquotes Scripture constantly and embarassingly. Stick with EW Bullinger, who knew Hebrew and Greek. Bullinger knew the nuances of the languages, and not just the words. MacArthur builds the doctrine of salvation on Luke! There is NO gospel of salvation in Luke. The real gospel for today is in Romans. MacArthur misquotes the more or less "examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith," which is actually misinterpreted in today's translations. The Scripture actually reads, "Since you seek a proof of Christ in me, you yourselves, examine yourselves...." In other words, Paul was telling the Corinthians that if he was not their spiritual father, then they were not his spiritual children. That passage has NOTHING to do with salvation. Luke was an introduction of Christ and His Kingdom to Israel, started by John the Baptist. It is not church doctrine at all. Only Paul's letters are church doctrine. James is NOT.
