Sand printing is similar to 3D printing; layers of 0.25mm thick sand are ‘printed’ onto a jobbox with a layer of chemical binder in between allowing for complex 3D shapes to be made, slice by slice, layer by layer. It's so good that F1, LMP1, LMP2, WRC, WRX and Moto GP use this tech to make all sorts of parts. So how does it work and is it the way of the future?

7:44 -- A little correction.. the sand doesn't want to expand 1%. Molten aluminium occupies a volume ~1% bigger than when in a solid state so as the metal cools it contracts by 1% from the shape defined by the mould. Been dealing with this for 20-odd years and have designed thousands of moulds including 3d printed cores.

I'm doing an internship (metalurgical engineering) in a foundry with a 3d sand printer. We don't make parts for f1 cars but there have been some huge cylinders for industrial motors. There is alot of engineering that goes into the whole 3d sand process. I can also say that all the information you gave is correct, and a good way of explaining it in a digestable way. Well done

It would be a fun fact if it was a fact, but it’s not. The word sand is thought to have originated from an Old English word, which itself originated from the old Dutch word sant, which became zand (meaning, you guessed it, sand). The word didn’t originally refer to the yellow stuff on the beach (as most people a few hundred years ago probably lived and died without ever having seen the ocean). It was actually used to describe unstable ground found on fine dirt near a river bed. The word then came to mean something that was finer than gravel, but coarser than dust.

At OTC (Offshore Trade Conference), there was a company that would melt the surface of the sand rather than using a binder. It looked amazing. One of their sample prints was a coffee mug with a finish that looked like it was glazed. The benefit behind this technology is getting smoother oil channels and other internal geometry without the need or cost of post casting buffing.

Honestly industrial and home 3D printing is one of the biggest things to come around in the last few decades and I can't wait for it to get really mainstream. I don't need to go to a Junkyard and hope they have my model year car to find a specific power steer pump or a clip for a rocker-panel. God so many possibilities!

Another way is to use a wax form packed with sand. My favorite method... using a wax form allows to have crazy complex shapes, less shrinkage, and if you really want to use 3D modeling - you can now 3D print a wax form.

The gas which is used to harden the sand can make your vision pretty foggy. In the Company where I work we call the gas amin. There are days when you get in the car after a shift and you think that is really foggy outside today. And after every shift you got sand everywhere.

This was actually entertaining, was hoping to see a little more discovery Channel footage, ie the actual process in real life, not an animation, but still really good way of explaining it. Would you be able to, say, build a model big enough to manufacture large containers vessel parts for sea? And I know some metals/alloys need to go through different or multiple processes to make it stronger so how would that work with sand molds?

As a newer mechanical engineer fresh outta school I really appreciate these videos showing the amazing side of mechanical engineering in the industry. But this videos takes me back to dark days in material science class. My roommate was a material science engineer, that’s a topic better left to the material science engineers haha.

one of my old mechanical engineer professors always said the bigest take away from casting to remember is just how freaking good modern pression aerospace casting is, this coming from a guy who worked at ge making jet engines.

If I had the chance to change cast engine parts I would change the pipe where the hose is inserted like the radiator and thermostat. Instead of using a flat surface pipe I would change the shape to something like a garden nozzle pipe where it's like a pine tree to keep the hose more secured due to extreme pressure...

I recently started smelting and sand casting at home with a homemade furnace from an old propane tank. I would love both an episode on material science as pertains to cars, and you casting your own parts!

I can't speak for the other teams, but Mercedes doesn't use sand casting on its engines in F1 - all parts are machined out. The CT scanning is correct though and every part is checked inside and out to make sure it's perfect.

i used to make intake manifolds for honda cars at a warehouse we had a machine that baked and made the sand molds then i sanded all the casting lines out of the sand mold then put the molds into my casting dies and hit the buttons a giant laddle made of fiberglass like material would dip into a well filled with molten aluminum fill up and poor it into my casting machine

@@jordaneggerman4734 Take into consideration that the magnum has many models. It has v6. v6 awd. V8. V8 awd. I highly doubt it's faster than the v8. Even the v6 was like a freakin track car. Though my grandpa had a grand caravan and its fast for a minivan

Curious as to why they would choose casting of any kind over 3D metal printing. We can even 3D print Titanium now so why risk the chance of a weak spot when you could layer it all together and even transition between alloys in the print?
