"The money power preys upon the nation in time of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me, and causes me to tremble for the safety of our country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed." - Abraham Lincoln.
@@roblosh8417 By calling me a girl are you trying to make fun of me? Like being a girl is somehow a bad thing? Lol pretty typical Tool fan. Say something negative about their gods and they lose their shit. It’s funny how Tool fans love to pat themselves on the back for being different by liking Tool yet all you fans are exactly the same lol
@@07foxmulder Actually no, I’m not calling you a girl. When I’m super excited about a band I’ll often say that I’m fan-girling over them. Didn’t think that particular phrase would stick with you this way but the point was that everyone is a huge fan of something, and it doesn’t really matter if someone else’s favorite thing is different from another’s.
Bahahaha... I knew he had some kind of training the way He took down that fan who got on stage... and then started humping him for a 1/2 hour It's on RU-vid and pretty funny does this leg sweet it's hilarious
It's nice to see an interview where Maynard expresses some of his day-to-day emotions. The way he strained on "just to get aaaanything done," was so himself. I'm glad Maynard's gotten a little more open and direct with interviews in recent years, but also really admire the way Joe gets him out of his shell.
@@PhantomPanic Those weren't his notes to sing. Him handing off the mic wasn't a result of the incident with the fan it was already planned before the show. I hope that answers your questions.
MJK is such a man amongst men. I love this dude, and Joe Rogan is the perfect person to poke and prod to get really deep in to his way and how he thinks. Such a great podcast.
Anytime Maynard talks about Tool, he just gets this irritated tone in his voice and it's hilarious. Guess that's why he's got two other bands to work on while the dudes in Tool are figuring out what the hell they want lol
It’s usually the other way around. The tracks get laid and sent to Maynard for lyrics......Maynard is usually the reason for delays. Notice how none of the band members are interviewed about this?
@@joshuaford9942 That’s not true at all. There were several interviews post FI about how the band felt bad for Maynard because he was taking a ton of slack from fans because everyone thinks he’s always the reason it takes so long. Well actually...Maynard is in two other bands because Tool takes so long to write. It’s the band and it always has been. MJK just takes the heat because he’s in other projects and he’s the singer.
Could you imagine down the line some kind of mad max reality everything is voted on by ai computers and he was picked to be the new Shaffer and everyone was forced to watch the late show
Nice analysis. In 1987 I was doing bass tech work for a band called Funhouse in LA, a glam punk band and was setting up the bassist rig for the show. Unknown to me I thought the front of house sound engineer was the only other person the room while we sound checked Mary's rig. He had me go through several styles of bass playing to get level and eq adjustments. After about ten minutes another man walked up to the stage and asked to talk to me. He said he wanted me to meet someone. I told him I was kind of busy but he then stated it was Julian Lennon. Of course, I didn't believe him because I didn't see him. Now, the place (Roosevelt Hotel) in Hollywood has a large hall for shows/concerts so I couldn't see all the way to the back where Lennon was sitting with his entourage. Around 20 people including 4 very large body guards who to say the least, good at their job. I was introduced to Lennin who asked me if I would audition for his band for a limited tour coming up. My words verbatim. " No offense Mr. Lennon, I can't stand your type of music." I was into hard rock. His main assistant, a very tall women looked like I just slapped him. Her face expression was priceless. Lennin himself was very cool with what I said because he admired my honesty which is virtually non-existent in Hollyweird. One thing about meeting him though...you can tell you're way out of your league financially, his hands looked they never did any type of labor and his clothes were not store bought, but immaculate custom made. The statement is right. Stars get caught up in a fantasy world of "Yes" men and women who because of this behavior cause more damage then good for their clients.
This is also the problem with doctors. Working in a hospital is like a different world with doctors the all knowing God's who you can't dare cross. It's hilarious
So true. That’s why people need to always remember where they came from. Appreciate and feel good about the hard work you put in, but never become arrogant and high headed.
This line from 1:13 is absolutely true. I see it in both myself and other people who went through traumatic childhoods when that damaged part of us gets triggered by something. And that thing Joe goes on to describe about "auditioning for things" - that's not just actors, that's the daily life of every damn near every person on the planet. Putting on masks to impress others, be they true or false, might be one of the few universal characteristics of our species (or as universal as nearly 8 billion individuals can ever be).
Most artistic people are sensitive. And by that nature, easily hurt. And ‘show business’ is a business of rejection. So I can see how people who are used to hearing NO, well they’ve been banking resentments...and those resentments collect interest. And when success comes and they are given even a modicum of power-BOOM! Next you thing you know, the meek guitar player from me mid-west is yelling at a production assistant cause his coffee is cold.
People really need to stop looking to rock stars and actor's for answers for important things aim a little higher if most people knew these rock stars and actor's they would hate them
Everyone who counts likes you Maynard, you and your bands and your talent is unquestionable imo. You and Chris Cornell where the reasons I do cover music and ever got the stones to get on stage, and APC helped me stay sane during my time in the Navy. I am likely too poor to meet you in person, but would like to give you my thanks and am looking foreward to buying your new TOOL release.
Maynard seems like one of the most down to earth rock stars. Type of dude that if you didnt know that he was who he is .... he would be cool to just hang out with like anyone else.
I have to admonish myself. I came on here with a preconceived notion of what this man was going to be like, based on the serious nature of his music. I mistakenly thought he’d be another self-important wind-bag that has lost site of everyday life. I’m very glad (and a little ashamed) to say I was wrong. He truly seems like a sincere, intelligent and truly compassionate person. Lesson learned.
Pat yourself on the back while you’re at it. It takes a grown ass adult to admit something like that. Especially on a public forum where these keyboard warriors can snipe at you with no foot to mouth repercussions.
Hey man, that’s cool! It’s good to learn and be proven wrong. Admitting you’re wrong about something is so much better than ignorantly doubling down on your original point, which is a big problem these days
@@cheothegeo2742 it’s not about the success…I know plenty of successful people that are amazing. He just seemed very self-serious, or at least I thought.
The best bands are made up of individuals who won't compromise: Tool and particular Soundgarden. Even the best of us have blind spots and weak moments, and having your mates say "that just ain't gonna cut it" leads to perfect albums.
Not really, if I got a few million I'd invest it completely split up with several types of investment (business, stock, land/property, bonds, etc). Some people blow their money, others don't. It just depends on the person
Honestly, it's probably a miracle that any band stays together at all given the mix of money, fame, ego, artistic vision, all the hangers (agents, friends, family) putting in their two cents, etc.
@@pinetreetemple4611 1992 EP was better and the new material is just as good in its own class they sound different every album you're not a Tool fan if you only like one of their albums that's only one of their sounds
@@pinetreetemple4611 right cause Maynard is trying so hard to be like his old self that's why he doesn't stomp around on stage and scream vocals anymore gottcha that must be why almost every single song on the new album talks about the changes associated with growing old through fandom and rolling with them. Either you haven't sat down and listened to it a few times or you're just losing your mind with that age. Sounds like the only one pretending or wishing to be young is you what do you want the band to say? "Sorry for not having a mid life crisis?" I mean if you really think any song on the new album sounds like an imitation of fucking "Hooker with a Penis" or some shit you must be loosing your hearing too.
@@tumekekodda9767 yeah but jamie fox isn't at the level of keanu... BTW jamie is also a comedian ... AAA actors dont need that atention anymore.. specially keanu... the dude still rides de Bus... go figure
Even without the fame that Maynard and bandmates enjoy (?), it's relatively easy to come to the conclusion that being a music person involves openess beyond the ordinary levels, and a great deal of guardedness, and self shelter as well. Staying real, and true to yourself is the only way to operate within that world, as well as maintenance of a humble attitude.
Its simple...Famous people like movie stars/TV stars/musicians make a TON of money but here's the thing...THEY HAVE A TON OF FREE TIME.Movie stars do 2, maybe 3 films a year.Tv actors shoot for about 6 to 8 months maybe. Musicans tour 6 plus months out of the year.
Ehh, tv /movies they get good money yeah but not really a lot of free time at all unless they're taking a break AKA not working. And not working means potentially losing traction as a celebrity, so they tend to keep working.. And if you consider all the work that goes into it, it's crazy. Unpaid pre-audition practice for the upcoming auditions, then countless auditions where you're just waiting to go in and say your lines before you get hired and paid. Constant communication/meetings/phone calls/skyping with your agent/manager/assistant/director/producer/photographer/accountant/etc. Massive amounts of reading/rereading/rehearsals/group table reads and practicing lines over and over and over and over, and possibly some line/scene/character changes that require a bit of relearning something about a character and more rereading and more rehearsal. Sitting in a chair for sometimes minutes usually hours every day doing makeup/prosthetics and doing dress/wardrobe. All the time spent just sitting and waiting - flights/driving to shooting locations/staying in trailers/hotels on location away from your home and family bc they have their own lives maybe their own jobs or are in school, sometimes staying out of state/country for months at a time unless your flying home every weekend, in that case lots of time spent in security then waiting to board then waiting to fly. Doing press/interviews/events/meet and greets/charities/dinners/photo shoots/commercials/advertisements/etc. Being stopped by fans constantly for autographs/pictures/etc, for no pay of course. And then getting called back in for emergency reshoots when you think a job is done, hope you weren't busy. Oh, and if you get lucky and strike gold with a successful movie franchise or TV series - say hello to multiple years long contractual obligations that control how you live OUTSIDE of work bc you need to keep looking like your character when it's time to film and say goodbye to even more or your free time! And after allll of this - any bit of free time these people have left is photographed and recorded by fans/paparazzi and put online to be studied and critiqued to death. Yeahh, I'll keep my average 9 to 5 job and my anonymity.
That’s the first time I ever seen him not acting like a madman he’s very disturbing to watch on stage, but as a person he seems well-adjusted and pretty cool
People who desire to become famous don't become fucked up for being famous. They're already fucked up... that's why they want to be famous so they can be seen and validated
They got everybody looking at them, talking about them, thinking about them....and they just wanna go to 7\11 for a slurpee, but they can't. That would drive me batty too
