it seems to me that this is a viscous cycle of price gulgding, with the energy providers at the root of it as they increase the electrical costs , which in turn means that manufactures and producers need to increase costs , then the markets then us. its either that the cost of extracting oil per cubic unit has gone up for the world economy is dealing with an energy cartel

t may actually then be a symptom of the indicators that the worlds oil supply has actually entered the decline phase globally

I work at a Taco Bell on the weekends despite being an options trader during the week. Did it for a few reasons but the important one here is it gave me some on the ground insight on a 400 share position I held in YUM for years. I ended up dumping that position during the summer last year after watching things like how often a credit card was run vs cash/debit and just hearing comments from customers about prices. All it told me was the consumer was getting very weak. Comments like yours don't surprise me and I think this time, this recession, YUM and MCD won't be so lucky like they have been before.

$18+ for fast food? Here in Norway, one of the most expensive countries on earth, I can get a full dinner plus coffee for that price in most cafes. Here at Fauske in Northern Norway, the cafe we visit the most (at the railroad station), have dinners starting at around $14, and the food is excellent. And $7 for coffee, is roughly double compared to just about any cafe, restaurant or gas station here, and even that is expensive, imo. Btw, here in Europe we don't have these massive chains taking over everything. Everywhere, from the smallest villages to the largest cities, you'll have no problem finding cozy restaurants that doesn't belong to any chain at all. And thank God for that !!!

The problem with mandated minimum wages is that by far not every business is worth the increased labor compensation, particularly low-margin enterprises relying on hordes of low-skilled workforce. Differential application of the minimum wage could mend the situation, but that will demand even more red tape and exception loops that have to be administered and the already existing exceptions are siring controversies.

I don't eat fast food, never really did... only in a pinch while traveling every blue moon or so. But I specifically remember that in 2020, when people were pushing for $15 wages an hour, I commented this would cause prices to sky rocket and make it unaffordable, AND people will lode their jobs. Do you want to make minimum wage, or do you want no job...? Because that's where we are heading with this BS. Then, after $15, inflation was on the brink, and NOW, they are pushing for 20 to 25$$ an hour! I even said they would end up firing actual human beings and make it ALL automated with robots. People called me every name in the book, tried to bully me on here, called me every ist, ism, and phobe too. "You are a rac!st p0s," was said to me ALOT! I feel vindicated, but it is upsetting because I knew this horrible outcome would come with my vindication. CAUSING the lower class to suffer much more. People need to start thinking logically again and stop running on pure emotion and delusional thinking. Far too many people are brainwashed AF, walking around wanting to just find/pick/start a fight with anyone that disagrees with them. These people are making my brain SMOOTH AF, bro.

This is basically the issue with capitalism as a whole: big corporations are incentivized to offer a great service at an insanely good price to drive out the local competition. Once that local competition is gone, raise the prices because there's nobody else to compete. We've seen this happen IN LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE ECONOMIC SECTOR, from video games to movies (blockbuster-netflix anybody?), and it's never going to change.

Food prices are up across the board (and that is a crisis!) but cooking at home is the most affordable way to feed yourself and your family. And that doesn't mean buying frozen meals or meal subscription service trash. Go to the grocery stores and buy real food and learn how to cook. Yes, you will still be hurt by the current cost of living crisis, but not as bad as the people who eat out a lot or buy garbage pre-made food.

My wife and I shop at expensive chain grocery stores like Meijer and Buehler's because we hate the experience of shopping in places like Walmart and Marc's. We pay more for the same thing because the decor, clientele, and service are better, even though the products themselves are identical. There are independent, mom-and-pop shops in our area, usually owned by Amish and Mennonite families, but those are too expensive. As for fast food, that stuff is garbage. I get why there’s a labor shortage for fast food. I worked at a DQ for three years and had a position in assistant management; the impossible labor standards and guilt tripping they held everyone to in order to meet monetary goals was completely unacceptable. Fast food chains push people too hard and are an industry that treats them too lowly. When I moved back for summer from college, I was straight up in telling my parents that I was either finding a retail job or not working at all. I refuse to do fast food again at all, you’ll have to put my life on the line first.

As a brit thst moved to Canada, i will say that what you described as the average American town is also the same as the average Canadian town, especially in the west. Everything is s chain. Very little local businesses left especially in the food industry. Every tlwyn looks the same snd each has zero identity. Bigger towns and cities have terrible or non existent public transportation and the whole town is pretty much umwalkable. The small supermarket like Spar or Co-Op does not exist ln North America. Instead it is replaced by convieience stores like 7/11 or Circle K, that sell nothing but garbage food. They may as well give you insulin when you enter because if you buy anything, at their over inflated prices, you will probably end up with diabetes some time shortly afterwards. And thats if you lucky to have a convience store anywhere near you, especially within walking distance to where you live. There are literally whole suburbs that have zero stores anywhere near them. People have to drive everywhere, but then they ask themselves why they are obese.

It was interesting when I realized a local, mom-and-pop sit down restaurant with actually good food cost less than McDonald's slop.

this is why i make mcdonald's breakfast at home. you can work at a fast food learn how they do everything then quit rinse and repeat till you can make all fast food and be self reliant

In my country, they offering all kinds of promotions and offers (kfc, mcd etc.) because of the palestine / isreal war. Imagine food being dirt cheap only because a boycott is happening. We can truly see the real margins they operating on compared to normal prices. The only way to bring down prices is when they are forced. Nothing else.

What's cool is in response to this a lot of small towns, even in red America, have been starting community-owned grocery stores for themselves.

A 2-toping person pan pizza, 4 boneless wings, and a 20oz soda is less than $10 after tax at Pizza Hurt RN. Gotta say, it’s one heck of a deal in these times. Not cheaper than cooking yourself, but if you just don’t feel like it.

I dont eat out often so i dont get shocked by restaurant prices. But I have eaten in these chains in other countries where i know wages and benefits are much better and dven recently in Canada, McDonald's was not this expensive. And am accounting for the change in currency. Also, i truly hope these communities accross the US can push their politicians to create policies to incentivice actual grocery stores to open up.

I honestly don’t know how Americans can have entire towns that do not have pedestrian routes. I’m not criticising citizens, just city planners.. I’m from a large town outside of Glasgow, Scotland, and you can literally NOT cross a single road from one side of town to the other, bridges and pavements along with parks and greenery everywhere, 8.3 square miles and I don’t have to cross a single road. Some US car built areas are disgusting tbh.

Food prices over here i Scandinavia have skyrocketed also, would guess around 30% for fast food, i see less and less people walking in to those places these days. This will be normalised and everyone will forget about very soon, then they will raise it again and put less food in the packages, and sadly your salary will stay the same, its a clown world.

Years ago we popped into a wimpy and we had a meal and a drink and we never went back because we tought it was expensive. Now everybody putting there prices up and blaming it on the environment to the raw materials and what it cost down to labour cost add into it we should eat healthy as well people want to eat a meal and not made to feel bad about it

Ahh... America. Here in Slovenia I walk across the street to a family owned restaurant, eat healthy food and pay a reasonable price. And if I want fast food, I go to turkish kebab guy, eat a kebab or something like that, and it is cheap, and also probably more organic and healthier than American "healthy" food.
