Many years ago when Bradley was first running in primary I happened to listen to a speech. While I cannot recall the full speech I have always remembered and revered his statement that many of us owed our prosperity on the investment made by the government in social programS like the New Deal, the GI bill, etc that strengthen our families and created a ladder for the future. The intent he said was for the ladder to endure for future. What he further stated was that the intent was that the investment would continue and not that the ladder ed would end.

"Never look down on somebody you don't understand" might just be the best recommendation I've ever heard. I'd follow it with: don't forget that you can't ever truly understand anyone, even yourself. Listening to the Honorable Senator Bradley is truly inspiring. "Don't underestimate the human spirit. Don't underestimate our common humanity." These are admonitions worth living by as we strive to mature beyond humanity's toddlerhood.

I think Bill Bradley would have made a superb president. I recall when he was once told by his advisors, perhaps his accountants, that there were ways he could avoid paying certain taxes. His response: "Why don't I just pay what I owe?"

I voted for Bill over Al during the Democratic primaries (participating in the Iowa caucus process for the first and last time--quite interesting). We got robbed in the end with Bush Jr., with one of the most ignominious SCOTUS decisions of all time (ranking up there with Dred Scott and Korematsu). Good to see Senator Bradley still alive and well!

I think the trick is to be the sophisticate who can posit worst case scenarios, because often enough one is confronted with them, but for one purpose and one purpose only: to figure the best way out of them, if they should occur, recognizing that there IS a best way out of them, not brooding about how bad they are.

Pessimism can likewise have a paralyzing effect. People are sure "it" won't work so they stop trying. Optimism is better for the soul, as long as it's active rather than passive. Perhaps it needs to be blended with healthy cynicism.
