I don’t think people realise they’re keeping the active rear wing (and adding an active front wing). The only change is that you don’t need to be within a second of the car ahead. Teams should be able to use higher downforce setups designed for cornering, but be able to increase the top speed on straights with less drag from the active aero

I don't see how F1 can ever inherently make overtaking easier without assistance. The current era is faster than ever because every team is fighting to develop more downforce who's default side effect is turbulent air. DRS is lame as FK, because its predictable. We know when DRS is allowed which is fine, but we also know WHERE they can use it. So of course the areas that allows for DRS are we gonna see the passes. Not only that the rules for how far behind the leading car form you determine when you can use it totally takes strategics advantages out of it. They should have let the drivers pick when to use it.

Wouldn't they end up chosing the exact same areas of the track, the longest straights?
@EntropicExergy
@EntropicExergy Месяц назад
Because of safety reasons, they will never do that. Sure, most racers, say from the midfield to the top ones, will know not to use it too close to corners, but what about the Mazespins, Strolls and Latifis in the pack. They would choose the wrong locations and then cause a giant crash, possibly life ending. So no, that will never happen, the FIA will dictate which parts of the track allow for its use and you'll just have to live with it. But if you want unpredictable, go watch Indycar or any spec series, those tend to be lotteries most of the time.

Fans seem to find wet races more entertaining by an overwhelming margin. There is no DRS in these races. DRS probably isn't the cause, but it points to issues inherent to F1 cars, and how these large, fast, perfectly-handing cars leave so little room for anything cool to happen. I've had more fun watching NASCAR, but only because of the radio drama. Both are bland. Rally and WEC remain miles more entertaining, because there's so much more room for interesting stuff to happen. It's not the cars, it's the sport.

In a race driver’s mind, it is always ‘take the risk now to see if it pays off, think about the consequences later.’ You can have as many regulations and penalties as you like but the drivers will still risk it all if there’s opportunity to get ahead.

@@thecounterrr Dirty air (also known as turbulent air) has no specific purpose per se, it is just a consequence of wings and other aero features messing up the flow of air too much. More over-the-body downforce is achieved by messing with the flows more, leading to more dirty air. Ground effect is an entirely different way of generating downforce, one that doesn't require messing with the flows too much. With ground effect you can reach similar levels of downforce without creating too much dirty air. That is why they introduced it, because it allows you to follow other cars closer because you still get plenty of "good" air flows.
