I am worried that same thing is happening in India. Most of the southern states have TFR of 1.5. main reason is real estate boom which is not good for a society. It puts a lot of pressure on individuals in getting a own house which is essential unlike a car or an iphone and paying emi for next 30 years. In short your salary gets cut byaround 40 percent for your entire career. Most other expenses can be managed and none of them needs to be paid for such a long time. In my opinion commercialization of houses should not be allowed. Infact houses are meant for living and not for selling/investing.

When my wife and I married in 1968, she was teaching as an adjunct at Boston University and Tufts. When we married she gave up both jobs and then for the next 16 years she was at home. In 1984 she went back to teaching but both children were already going to school. But various factors have now made it difficult or impossible for just one salary to support a family. India’s growing population is presenting a large issue for India with most Indians still living in poverty. And with Indian society being fragmented along religious, regional and caste lines, a population continuing to grow will exacerbate the problems. Plus the need to build even more toilets.

I think it's partially social too. Divorce rates are very high. I didn't want to start a family until I was confident in the relationship. So I spent my 20's searching for the elusive "right one." 20's are the prime reproductive years.

It isn't a bad thing for countries to have declining population. This will reduce the pressure on water and food security issues. Automation and AI will mean less people are required in the job market.
A problem is that no one seems interested in smaller but better societies. Why can't small be sustainable? More environmentally friendly and peaceful? A stable society may well be more productive and egalitarian than a constantly growing demography. GDP mania seems to drive Big is Better mentality.

France's idea won't work. Assuming productivity of people to remain the same before and after that policy, more people getting more leaves means less productivity in the economy overall. Plus government subsidising it. That means things will only get costlier. That means people won't take those leaves as they need more money. That means less family and less time with family. Like I always say, anything government touches, education, health, energy etc, it turns into shit. Always. History is the proof.

Why are you worried about China. They have 50% population who are under-employed , they can wait till the population halves. Worry about India where under-employment is also 50% and our population is still growing while jobs and affordability is in worse condition than China.
