What awesome content. I myself would get instantly disheartened if my FTP didn't budge after a specific training block and would probably question future workout motivation. It didn't even occur to me that I may well have improved a specific energy system and FTP roughly stay the same. I really needed to hear this, thanks guys!!
From a past company I know how much work it is putting a podcast together. Despite this, I hope you folks continue to produce this podcast well into the future. Every episode is packed with awesome discussion and information. It would be a great "product" on its own, and it adds even more value as part of the TrainerRoad platform.
Obvs biased because the team answered my question earlier in the Podcast - but I gained so much from this episode in terms of consolidating and building on my understanding of some core topics that have interested me for the past 12 months. So a massive thank you.
Such a great conversation! Thanks so much for the information, you guys. My FTP has stayed between 325-330 (4.0 w/kg) for the past 5 months, but I've noticed other improvements: greater anaerobic power, improved stamina, bigger aerobic base. I just need to stay consistent with my training. TR is the best training platform. 🙌❤
even though you are at 4.0w/kg it is imo just an awesome thing... look at me, starting my biking amateur at 43 years young, now 45 and with only 3.0 w/kg, father of two... I see no brighter ftp in the new year but, I honestly get enthusiastic about seeing young people doing great but still wishing for more, it brings me back to my youth time doing other sports and motivates me too. Keep your work, you will never know, but suddenly you get a spike on your ftp.(as you wrote, stamina, base, anaerobic are already there).
Hey, thx for the videos. Question about max heart rate that I haven’t seen yet. Can you tell me if I should use calculated max heart rate or max heart rate determined by Garmin/wahoo heart rate monitor? I fee as if my calcax heart rate is too low, because most of my rides which feel comfortable are in the zone 4 range which according to research is too high! Thoughts, please!! (49 male rider: cal max hr 171-173; wahoo max hr 192)
But does Trainerroad measures (and by measures I mean does it perform specific tests) those shorter efforts? Because then the ramp test will be useless and the cyclist will not know if improvement is being achieved or not.
Yes! Just like with your FTP, TrainerRoad measures your shorter efforts and records improvement, although there's no specific singular workout to do so. The 'Personal Records' segment of your career page shows a detailed account of your PRs and improvement/changes over time, for any determined length of effort (5 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc). You can compare season against season, or all-time records to see your areas of growth, and use that information to decide the areas that you'd like to work on when building your training plan!
Hey guys, currently my FTP is around 350w and my 5min power around 450/460w (73kg, 1m93) as a Junior 2, will it be possible to get to 400 FTP and 500 5min in around a year? If so what would be the axles to focus on?
sorry to crash in dude, but it all depends on you. No one can say how is it in your personal life: stress, studies, friends, relationships etc. Even if you just focus on 5 min power, no one can guarantee you will carry on climbing on this...your fiber composition, your immune system being able to cope with the training demands. Best of luck.
You got the right answer here from @NorthWind, there are a multitude of factors that go into the ultimate success of hitting that goal, that all depend upon a biological specifics, your training/life balance, etc. If you want to submit your questions with more details about your capacity to train each week and history in training, you can do so at www.trainerroad.com/podcast to have your question answered by the team. Until then, keep training and recovering hard! :)
