There's a sad and almost poetic sort of irony in that their desperation to prevent aging is what's making them look so aged.

Yes, and I also think it's Karma for the ageist ones. The amount of hate spewed at me for being old is unreal by that generation. Not all, of course there are kind, decent Gen Zs At the same time, Gen X (and they gaslight us saying all generations are like this), we weren't like that. We may have made fun of old people as teens, but we didn't openly hate on them

@@TheSulrossas an older millennial, nothing is sadder and scarier to me then women my age suddenly realizing they should have thought about kids sooner, projecting their self-disappointment onto all men, becoming jaded af and then trying to shame guys their age for not wanting to date them. I hope Gen Z can avoid that path, lol. The desperation of women trying to find a guy immediately to have a kid while simultaneously raging at all men kinda reminds me of this gen z freak out over aging. I mean, the media lied to women my age about a lot of things, but as an adult you have to own your mistakes….not just blame patriarchy or whatever. That being said, going over seas doesn’t exactly seem like the answer. You can find more traditional women here, you just have stay out of cities, lol.

When you get a bunch of cosmetic procedures done to augment your appearance, you don’t look young, you look like an older person trying to look young. It’s an uncanny valley effect, regardless of age. 60 or 25, if you see someone who clearly has had a lot of work done or 10 pounds of makeup on, you think “oh, that person’s trying to look young” and that makes them look older than they really are.
@JamesWhitePhotography

Absolutely correct! I never see fillers and botox and nose and cheek work etc and think "that's a 19 year old wanting to look 18", but rather "well they are clearly trying to look mid 20's, so they're probably mid 40's"...not the outcome they were hoping for i assume

Always been a firm believer in natural beauty and overcoming my body insecurities rather than using drastic life altering procedures. I think that only worsens the insecurities one feels about themselves. So far taking care of my body has helped my skin immensely and keeping up with a good skin care routine. I always tell myself to not overdo it. I'm 25 now, and I still look like I'm in my late teens to all of my peers.

As a guy that runs a RU-vid channel for men's skincare, I obviously spend a lot of time looking at other content creator's online, and in skincare it's predominantly females. I totally agree that Gen Z is looking older than they should. I am truly worried about the skincare companies and 'influencers' that are pushing products onto youngsters (primarily young girls). Teenagers should not be using Retinol! I would love there to be a scientific study into the appearance of aging between the two groups. Social media has made youngsters feel they have to use products to look 'perfect' in this imperfect world. The guy you featured from TikTok is a perfect male example (I follow him and enjoy his content). I do look a bit older than him, but not by much. I'm 58yrs old. I guess my worry now is that Gen Z pick up on this older look and then double-down on having more treatment and expensive skincare to 'fix' the problem. Thanks for highlighting this issue Brett.

This is so true. I am 39 and I have never gotten any work done. I think this has helped me with the aging process. My co-worker was telling me about this book. She said it was published way before I was born…in 2002…that was the year I graduated high school…and another co-worker was joking saying I should respect my elders. He was referring to himself as the my elder. I told him…”I am older than you! Way older so you should respect me.” He was shocked that I was about 10 years older than him. I think I look like 32-35. But that is because I have seen my face matured through the years. But many people still perceive me to be way younger.

Back when Botox became available they said we should start before wrinkles start. I refused, probably due to cost at the time, but I now feel that botox and filler messes the skin elasticity and natural collagen to keep skin plump while young. Essentially removing natural antiaging properties, and causing early aging signs. The muscles in the face and the skin cant support itself without the chemicals, and overtime it does not listen to the chemicals.

As a Gen Z fellow, I certainly don't claim 9/11, that happened before I was born... perhaps it's more of the fallout of 9/11 that could be creating this sort of situation? (i.e., greater global stress regarding foreign terrorism, increasingly centralized security, etc.) It would be interesting to compare this with Gen X and the Baby Boomers who grew up during the Cold War; the Millennials grew up after the end of the Cold War, though of course, they would have gone through the same sort of situation, merely at a different age. From personal experience, I would actually say that the pandemic and the effects of it contribute more to this phenomenon than anything to do with 9/11.

Whenever I hear Gen Z girls talk, there's a subtle tiredness in their tone of voice. For example, there's this South East Asian American I've known since 2015. Her voice should've been youthful and hyperfeminine, but she sounds like she's getting ready for retirement. And on emotional level, that might well be the case. Even with her long term depression, I was surprised that her voice was just high pitched enough to pass for a female one at all. But I've given her some tools for soul integration, so my hope is that dissolving old psychoemotional blockages will free up buried stressors and heal her circuitry. They also seem to do waaay more drugs than us millennials did. I have noticed cocaine, for instance, is way more normal today, especially amongst GenZ. That shit is gonna age you faster than anything will. Also speed. We just smoked some weed, and maybe did some shrooms once in a while. GenZ will put any and every drug into their system with no hesitation, and usually a cocktail of drugs instead of just one at a time like we did. They kind of seem a bit dumber to be honest. And screen time, and exposing themselves to radiation from phones and other devices, is also a factor. There are even some crazy people who sleep with their phone right next to their head for 8 hours straight, microwaving their brain (and face). It's insane.

10 years ago when I was in my 20's, the cool "it girl" thing to do was to be granola. Eating healthy, doing yoga, using natural products, and a positive mindset was what was cool. Using coconut oil as moisturizer was cool. Getting botox and filler in your 20's was not the norm. It wasn't until about 5 or 6 years ago, I started noticing 18 year olds getting filler and stuff.

Stop the filler and Botox bs, manage stress and emotions with consistent challenging exercise, put sunblock on everyday, take your vitamin D3, stay hydrated, get off your damn phones and touch grass, rocks, and maybe hold hands and give smiles and hugs (with consent or whatever bs makes you think I give a shit).

Same here. I’ve fewer grays than hubby so I’ve been told I look as young as 29, but to be fair, I have oily skin which I didn’t strip into submission so there’s that. Also, this group is more likely to be vegan or vegetarian which inherently makes it harder for them to get important amino acids and if they don’t manage nutrition well will make them very deficient. Water, essential vitamins from eggs and milk, natural collagen, bone broth, wings, skin, etc., they all add to the arsenal your body has against aging.

I think the overcomplicated skin "care" with millions of products and botox are going to do way more damage than good for a lot of younger women. I'm not very good at guessing younger ages anymore, but I think I guess that you look older because you're very good at makeup, and I think young people have gotten very good at putting on makeup now since there are many easy to find instructional videos and more pressure to put on a full face of makeup because they are so public online now especially with tiktok videos.

I think you hit the nail on the head here! These types of procedures are not as prevalent in Europe where I live, but I regularly get taken for being up to 10 years younger than I am, and I just do basic skincare and a bit of makeup. I dress my age as well, but still I always see the surprise in people’s faces when I tell them I’m almost 30. Even a dermatologist was convinced I was tops 21, and I constantly get ID’d. More than half of today's Gen Z weren't even born when 9/11 happened, I was 1 and a half years old, my brother wasn't even a month old, most Gen Z who were alive then couldn't even fathom the severity and tragedy of the event, not to even mention that it really happened and people lost their lives. Only the sorrow and aftermath of the even had any effect on us because adults kept ramming the tragedy of it into our little, undeveloped brains. While the stress is there, we had that same stress. Xennial here. Heroine chic was all the rage when I was growing up. I do think that social media’s constant onslaught creates its own set of problems but it’s not like the older generations are immune. The biggest change though is that we were taught how to address stress. Take responsibility for what we can and change it and ignore what we can’t. We were more active as children and probably had a more regular style of meal (more two parent households). They also make faces a lot more into their phone camera😂.
@reborka
@reborka 4 месяца назад
@@TheBaumcmdefinitely agree that Gen Z was not taught how to regulate stress. I’m Gen Z and didn’t have anyone around me that had parents that taught them how to control their stress. I’m an anomaly since I came from an abusive household, so I’m speaking on what I’ve observed in nonabusive child-parent relationships. And Gen Z suffers with a savior complex further exacerbated by social media saying that if you’re not actively involved in social justice (though most of it is performative and something to post about) then you’re “part of the problem”. So no self regulation mixed with constant doomer mindset, it makes sense why Gen Z has chronic stress and anxiety. I’m not saying it’s right, just pointing stuff out that seems to correlate. Though, you’d think with a generation of people who love going to therapy so much they would’ve learned about radical acceptance 🤔
