Why Germany Have Been The Best Team At EURO 2024 (So Far)

With maximum points and 7 goals from their opening 2 games, Germany have moved from Euro 2024 outsiders to probable favourites. But rather than this just being a simple case of never writing them off, Julian Nagelsmann has got his team playing a staggeringly effective brand of football that's getting the most out of a talented side. From the clever use of Toni Kroos, to the next evolution of Kai Havertz, Adam Clery explains how they've done it.

Against Switzerland you could see how to pla against Germany. The swissmen have done a really good job in the defense, give no space for the german midfield to develop their game. But I think that the first goal should count. There were more than one other player at the ball after the foul and the referee didn't react. And in the second halftime a clear penelty wasn't given. The referee really disapoint in m opinion. It seems, that Rüdiger played with some issues and didn't have the speed he needed to defend properly. Havertz did a lot of work, but was not very effective. Fortunaly there is a Füllkrug ... what a joker.

But don't forget that germany was already through and Kross also said that they have tried some new tactics in this game. Don't get me wrong, the Swiss did a great job and think this is the best way to play against Germany, but not sure if this game was a good indicator. Anyway, enjoy :)

It's interesting seeing a player such as Kroos making incisive passes that go straight through several layers of defending players to the attacking German player(s) in contrast to England's "horseshoe" passing around defenders. I've also enjoyed Italy's flicks and 1-2s at speed to break through defences and presses and push down the pitch and wondered why the talented English players are not able to do this also? Some questions will always remain mysteries it seems.

And yet, it took an italian own goal to win it for them. And Croatia created a lot of chances (including a penalty that should've had included a red card for...Rodri?). So yeah, Spain is a fantastic football team, but the victories have underminded the flaws in their game. As for Germany, they still have to face an opponent that will challenge them much more than Scotland and Hungary did.

White socks and sandals reporting in. Really great analysis, thank you! Nagelsmann is already a legend. Bringing back Kroos, defining specific roles for each player on the pitch and on the bench, and picking players by recent form over past accomplishments (e.g. R.I.P Hummels and Goretzka, but brining in Andrich and Mittelstädt...) was very bold and a game changer so far. We have a really nice mix of young talent and seasoned pros now. A lot of people don't know all these new names in the squad, but in international football the team mixture is more important than individual names. This system seems to work now. 4 months ago everything was grim here in Germany, now we are back for another "Sommermärchen" (summer fairy tale). LETS FUCKIN GO!
@Marck1122
@Marck1122 2 дня назад
😅😂😂 The Swiss showed how poor this analysis is and why Germany will never win a damn thing without proper strikers. Kai havertz is an absolute donkey and runs around like a headless chicken. I think he missed at least 10 chances to do anything inside the box - never troubled the goalkeeper. Without the 'real striker' Fullkrug, Germany will be looking into 2nd spot and playing Italy. I am fed up of coaches trying to eliminate the striker role with some BS ideas of false 9 etc. The reason Germany haven't won anything since 2014 are 2 players - Klose and Podolski. They maynot be all fancy 'movement players' but they knew one thing - to put the fking ball into the net - which is what football still counts for winning. So, unless the Tiki taka or other false 9 BS gives you score, the winning team always will have 1 or 2 players who knows how to finish and put the damn ball into the net.

Greetings from Germany! Against Scotland and Hungary, the German team played strongly, true, but against Switzerland the limitations got apparent. Germany's game is not robust enough for the strong opponents which will come next.

German here. Thank you for the really nice and clean analysis. I think the same. Our rotation in the front is what makes us lethal, but also vulnerable if the opponent plays with a deep down block. We still go for possession, but a lot of tries wont make it. But if one does... Also the material on the bench is pretty good as well. We got Sane, we got Füllkrug, we got Führich, Undav, Müller, Can and more.

Look at the competition. Switzerland was by far the most capable team they faced in that group and they nearly lost. Whereas Spain easily disposed of Croatia and Italy and then beating Albania with their second team. There are some other teams who maybe didn't shine yet but should be better than Germany if matched up in the knockout stage. Germany is playing well for the admittedly low expectations Germans had after the dismal last tournaments and results since. It wasn't until the March friendlies that Germans developed some sense of hope. Now they went completely the other way and of course everybody expects the cup now, which would be a huge achievement with that squad.

You analyzed the problem very nice. Nobody is knowing what to do against the diversity and variations of different systems. All depends on the unique abilities, best combined by their headcoach. He created an unpredectictable team. Very much more complicate by simply change one or two players. This is changing the used system massively. Why there is chaos not coming up? Easily explained by the plus-emotions and joy of play, which is creating unbelievable playing ideas. unpredictable. Since 2014 I didn t see such remarkable reactions, speed and knowingness of winning.

I don't think we are prime candidates to win the title. There are teams like Spain who really dominated world class opponents as well as France and the Netherlands who also have shown class so far. Our System has a weak spot which is the space behind Kimmich. Hungary already has shown that to the world, although they were not successful but then again it was Sallai(good player) and not Mbappé or Nico Williams in that space. I think we have played great so far but should keep our feets on the ground. Quarter finals will show if we can win the title if we manage to get there. Now I want people to imagine what it would be like if you had Trent do what Kroos does for England. By playing deeper and outside of the block, receiving the ball facing goal rather than back to goal and inside the block then you'd see similar results. Except Trent needs to start at RB & not CM like he has been doing so far and like Kroos does. However, the outcomes will be nearly identical. Trent has just as good a passing range as Kroos and can exploit the time and space in a similar devastating manner

half way watching through.. German here. The obvious problem with all of this is that playing from the sides doesnt really work well yet, as well as standard situations. Flanks do not land, corner balls are rareley good. Thats imho the reason why we have it "easier" against bigger names cause they play more aggressive so our center tactics can work out against heavy defending teams there is just no real access to the goal.

Dude is 3 years younger than r9, but has more than 10 years of experience, some years at one of the best clubs in Europe. He really identifies with the squad and stands up for his dudes. And he has serious communication skills, his pr management seems superb. He gave each player before the tournament it's safe role, leaving little to no room for discussion and clarity for them. His fan- and subsmanagement is also good. In Munich he subbed fullkrug and Munich-beloved soul müller, while in stuttgart he subbed locally loved undav and fuhrich, giving the fans what they want to see and proving his trust in various subs. Can was late nominated, but his goal left ZERO comments on his quality, although it wasn't his season. Currently, as England fans we already know what will happen if / when you play against England in this tournament. You'll smash our "team" to pieces. As you say though with Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, it's a wait and see game.

Best team is spain because of the wingers being always wide..it's easy to press germany because they are normally compact during build up...on a bad day they can make crucial mistakes

Switzerland had this German side's number. They must have closely studied your smooth analysis, and moved to counter it every which way: standing on Kroos' toes, closing down the center in front of the box, putting a lot of pressure on the defenders off the ball, and making runs in behind G's fullbacks (who were often positioned a little too high).

we need a Belgium video.They did a similar thing with a Onana in the midfield. He was playing alone in the deep position. Tielemans and KDB were so advanced but I felt like they were more vulnerable in the transition. A lot of end to end stuff in their game.

Not a big football expert here but. I disagree with the claim "Best Team". They are realy great, but there are many great rival teams.

Really good analysis. The biggest problem I see is the same as always, we are kinda prone to lose to counterattacks. Opposing teams tend to fall back very deep against us

Your analysis as always is really interesting. It does bring up 2 questions for England however, 1. Why has Southgate decided to experiment with a team and formation in the tournament without practising it beforehand (ie getting the players used to playing with each other in said way) 2. The fact Germany all have average positions in the same area - how come the England team (supposedly with better players) all trying to occupy the same area of the pitch because they all want to play the same position - cannot play with each other even though they should be able to. Surely if they had someone like Kroos (who Trent was supposed to be I think) to thread the balls through to the front line. For me the answer is that this is not actually what Trent does, he is great at playing balls over the top and not through the eye of a needle breaking lines. I think Southgate has seen what Nagelsman has been doing and thought I will scrunch this in to our system? Maybe? I mean it is only the idlings of my brain but maybe?

Southgate thinks? I doubt it.

You’re forgetting some key things here: 1) Germany didn’t need to qualify, they qualified automatically. So they’ve had two years to experiment in friendlies with zero consequences. Yes, Flick wasn’t too good at that. But when Nagelsmann came in he could look at all the experimentation that had been done before him and figure out what was needed to fix the problems. What’s more, instead of playing countries like North Macedonia, he’s been able to practice against the likes of France. 2) Germany have had far more squad stability than England. Southgate has had to contend with several of his key players being injured or occupied in every single one of the recent camps, as well as previous reliable system players falling too far out of form to keep in the squad. At the same time, there’s been a wave of English players rise this season in the form of their lives and a TON of clamour for them to be included. So in the first category, you’ve got players like Kane, Saka, Bellingham, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Trippier - none of them have been consistently available. In the second category, you’ve got Henderson, Phillips, Rashford, Grealish, even Maddison and Mount - previous squad regulars, some integral to qualification, but all far from their best right now. And then in the final category, you’ve got Foden, Eze, Gordon, Watkins, Palmer, Mainoo, Wharton, Guéhi, etc - lots of players who’ve had their best ever seasons but are either completely new or have yet to cement themselves in the squad. TAA is sort of in this category too. That’s a LOT of churn that Southgate couldn’t have foreseen and clearly didn’t plan for. It’s also a lot of instability that Germany have just not had to contend with. Not only is Nagelsmann familiar already with the Bayern players from club football, but the German squad has a really good blend of youth and age and a ton of overall experience that the current England squad completely lacks. Southgate definitely hasn’t had time to cement the team or tactics and that’s mostly not his fault - external circumstances have got in the way. 3) Commentary, fans and media narrative. We all know how much of a problem this is for England and always has been. For one reason or another, it’s been clear for some time that the general mood has turned on Southgate. He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. This puts both him and the players in a difficult position, you can see the media trying to sow discord with every single interview, and overall saps the confidence and energy from the team. The players look either terrified or overly defensive, and that’s not just because of what’s happening on the pitch; it’s because they know the public will turn on them if they put a foot wrong. We simultaneously expect too much and too little. Germany media isn’t perfect but I’d be surprised if they were anything near as toxic as ours. 4) HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE. This is a massive one. Germany are playing IN Germany. They’re on familiar turf, playing in stadiums they know well, surrounded by fans, enjoying the vibes. England does not have that. And, compared to our previous tournament camps, this one seems to have a weirdly tense, subdued feel, like there’s an undercurrent of anxiety. As fans, we are definitely not helping matters.

@@user-ed7et3pb4o Firstly I am not an England fan. Not even close. I am not forgetting these things. 1) Still does not change the fact Southgate is deciding to experiment AT THE EUROS instead of using the FRIENDLIES he definitely had a chance to implement things before getting to Germany. 2) your argument about squad stability is a non-starter as that is not something I spoke about and does not actually affect a team with this much squad depth (it may not be France's squad depth but is supposed to be on par with winning the tournament). And I have not clamoured for anyone to be included I have looked at Southgates experiment and in Adam's analysis can see some similarities with getting a good ball playing footballer on the ball near the back who can dictate the way England plays FULLSTOP. End of

Scotland have a lot of injuries this tournament - which really limited how they played against Germany (they can, and usually do, play much better) I’m glad you picked up on this in your other videos, Adam. Hickey and Ferguson (best midfielder in Serie A) a huge miss. This is spot on though. I was at the game, and their fluid movement up front was exceptional.

The Kroos 'left back' role is why we should be playing Trent at left back, not Trippier. If we don't have a left footer who can overlap, we can instead have a left-back who inverts and sprays long diagonals to Saka.

Great Job meine Freund 👍 a Perfect summary and analysis of the German way to play the opponents. As a German I lauched really hard at the part with the white socks and sandals 😂. Great job mate 👍🏻 extraordinary observation skills both in football and the German way of cruel fashion. If we end up loosing in this tournament we will torture the world with even more white socks and sandals (socks will be even whiter and sandals even uglier) 😂

Thank you for the analysis. I wonder how the analysis would have been, if you have made it after the game against swiss. The swiss team was attuned to the german team and thats why it ended in a tie. I would like to see an analysis about spain. They are equally as good or even better than the german team. If all goes as expected, we will have a bombastic quartal-final of GER vs. ESP. Best regards from Leipzig.
