Not always, I’d argue more like 25% of the time is it not worth it - people with the highest level of education move our society forward through research. You can’t conduct academic research (in the sense that you can’t be the principle investigator) without a PhD. Think about doctors, engineers, social workers, military officers, etc. There is a massive shortage of some of these workers in places like AK, USA. Even a 4 year degree in something “un-useful” can teach you to think critically & communicate if you work hard. As a society, we just need to do a better job of helping people decide what is for them, education or working in a sector education isn’t required to be a part of. Not discourage education.

I'm a Millennial. The housing market crashed as we entered the workforce. You couldn't get an entry level job without years of experience we clearly didn't have and then got victim blamed for it. Many of my peers are still in debt from a degree that was essentially useless to them and going to college was supposed to be the "safe" way to get a good full time job. Yes, if you take risks, you could lose everything. But so many of my peers and younger GenX lost everything by relying on school into a job and college. There is nothing "safe" about that method, but we have been brainwashed to believe that it's all there is for us the unwashed masses.

Hey Ryan: As someone who took a LOT LONGER to learn what you already have discovered, demonstrated, and conveyed very well here, I applaud your well-done summary of the whole "Job Sitch" and how the traditional model we are taught often conspires to prevent a person from learning how to build wealth. Nevertheless, as someone who didn't discover these ideas until around my thirty-third birthday, I was *still* able to then "target" retiring by age forty (I failed; it took me until about the age of forty-two to attain this goal); and now, at slightly 'north' of age sixty, I spend each and every day doing (in spite of a disabling condition I have endured since I was a teenager) pretty much whatever it is that I wish to do each and every day. This consists of frequently attempting to give back through selecting various charitable endeavors of my choice. The information you are providing here should actually be 'pumped into the heads' of high school students, and so I would highly encourage anyone who is watching that fits this description to "listen up" and and take notes. I try to teach as much as I can to the younger generation, and yet with my severe trigeminal neuralgia and frequent migraines, it is very difficult to expend as much energy as you do on your channel, but I still try to help those in my community as well as my son, and seven nieces and four nephews, to learn the economic realities of this world. Those who have yet to reach age thirty can benefit most from your information, because they still have an abundance of that one most vital resource: time! But even those who are younger than age fifty can still 'turn things around' if they are willing to aggressively address the things you have covered recently, such as reducing and avoiding DEBT, and learning about the vast difference between ASSETS and LIABILITIES, as well as the phenomenal power of COMPOUNDING INTEREST. I would suggest that you drill down even further on some of the 9-to-5 work myths you touched upon here in a future video: I address this topic under the moniker of "Your Salary Doesn't Matter!" when contrasting the focus most younger people place on their career growth as opposed to their (often sad but usual) avoidance of learning about SAVING and Growing Wealth. And as for those who are feeling 'stuck' with college debt and the 9-to-5 grind: don't despair! As long as you spend less than you earn, and SAVE a portion of that, you're still Good to Go. As a fellow New Yorker, and one who lives on the 'opposite end' of I-90 (near Niagara Falls), I wish you continuing success, and I encourage you to focus on the type of material that you present here. And I would also encourage those Millennials, and especially even those who are even younger and perhaps still in their high school "indoctrinational" years, to learn from you and from others like you, because there are boundless economic opportunities everywhere, as long as people are willing to educate themselves and take appropriate action. I view a young person's ability to grow wealth much as a farmer with 100 acres would view his potential future yield: what this means is, if you're saving NOTHING, it is akin to not planting your field in the springtime! Kids should learn this as early in life as possible! Carry On! - j q t -

That's all well and good from an individualized, financial point of view... but in economic terms those idiotic, scammed 9-5'ers are what fuel an economy that would not exist without them en masse. You benefit directly from that labor. Its kind of like saying that everyone should be their own boss... that's great from a theoretical basis, but at some point there has to be a division of labor with employees... not everyone can be an employer... and even if they were, who would they employ if everyone is supposed to make RU-vid videos and managing their stock portfolio? You also need that 9-5 job to financially even begin to have the initial capital to generate passive sources of income in the beginning stages.
@bluestripes6037
@bluestripes6037 5 лет назад
For balance, I think it is time to upgrade this conversation from "jobs suck, and entrepreneurs rule" to "how many of which type of income streams do you need to achieve your desired life, and what action do you take now to create those streams". *Jobs are a legitimate income source*, but you need to calculate what you are putting in (a prime slice of your day/life) and what your are getting out (taxable fixed salary), then play your cards right. If you can get tips at your job, then it might pay off to boost your service quality and increase your income there. The point is collecting enough money streams to sustain you to the level you want.
@KarlsLabReport
@KarlsLabReport 5 лет назад
First off, I agree with your assessment of the situation. The issue I have with #3, having attempted it, is there is absolutely NO assurance you will succeed doing that. In fact, there are FAR MORE ways things can totally go WRONG than they will go right. Trust me - I KNOW this from experience. Even if you are working for yourself, you CANNOT completely control for the human, er - FLAKE - or just plain evil factor inherent in dealing with other people. At the end of the day your success is STILL predicted on the cooperation of others in the marketplace, their desire (or lack of) for whatever it is you are selling. Vendors can be AS BAD or WORSE than the flakiest customers you've ever had. I've watched several of your videos and while I think they are well put together, not everyone is cut out to be a Real Estate or Internet mogul. I can tell you some SERIOUS horror stories of people who own rental Real Estate - I'd NEVER get into that. The risk of losing your shirt is too high, given the way many renters behave today. As far as RU-vid goes, LOTS of folks are being demonetized for saying the "wrong things". FWIW.

Next time you walk into a building, ride on a bridge, drive your car or flight to another country realize that that was engineered by educated peaple that at least work 40hrs a week and did go to college in their vast majority. The problem is not the option, but how you avoid debt and invest. Everybody in the workforce is important to society. I cannot imagine a world full of people that don't have drive for what they do and are only on RU-vid talking about how everybody working hard is part of a scam. If everyone had an online business who would be doing the real job out there? This video is just unrealistic.

I prefer option 4. Join the military at 18 until 22. Get paid good money (not for your hours however) and then start free college. Now you can be worth a good 5 figures by 22 with a free bachelors degree and possibly secret or top secret security cleaerence which is worth alot.

I agree mostly with option 1 and 2, but disagree with option 3, and this is coming from someone who chose option 3. Option 1-2 is pretty on point, the only thing I think it leaves out is that these days there are multiple ways you can go to college on scholarship or financial aid, potentially graduating with little to even no debt. I do totally agree with the point about jobs that might not necessarily be super desirable to most and the growth pattern topping out you'll likely have to go through. With option 3, I think the problem is that there are so many waves it can move, it's almost impossible to predict since taking option 3 is sort of like playing educated casino. You have relative control, massive potential, and you're constantly learning, but at the end of the day, not everyone is going to be able to leave with the jackpot. Option 3 is an incredible option most people def don't think about, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily the definite way for everyone, since at the end of the day, we all have different goals and the kind of lifestyle we're looking try to create for ourselves.

Working a job that's paying u only $9 in hour isn't worth it. What about bills? Car payments? Transportation for bus/cab money? Water bill? Money to pay to get your hair braided is $100 money to buy shoes? Clothes? Money to eat, Fix broken parts in your house? Put money in the bank? Etc the bills you pay are more money you earn and they think you can survive. If I was a slow learner and was born with a learning disability that effect me from learning math, how to read, and how to write I would've been doing something that pays more money. I do think this is a very simple approach, and there are a lot of factors that can prove or disprove your opinion. What I'm taking from this is that when you aren't in a 9 to 5, you have complete control of your success. There isn't any glass ceiling with restraints to job promotions or income. You've been fortunate enough to see a big picture of working outside of a 9 to 5, and I think it is great that you're sharing this with others. However, I think diving more into the subject would present a better discussion. I really enjoy your videos and the message you are sharing. Keep at it!

The hospitality industry is not 9 to 5. It has a very weird schedule. Work weekends/Holidays off on Monday and Tuesday. Usually, I get free food (be nice to cooks =free food). The best job that I love is banquet server. Free food, sometimes free booze, get to see your favorite celebrities up close and personal. Easy job just tray pass drinks and food. Double shifts are not very tiring compared to a double shift for a restaurant. If the event has a conference, speech, or video just wait chatting or relaxing until is over.

On theoretical level, you are roughly correct about different paths. However, the option 3 of taking risks has the following problems: (1) most people are not born with the cognitive abilities or personality type suitable for entrepreneurship, (2) Survivorship bias. Just because you succeeded does not mean that most people will be successful. I would argue that the vast majority would fail. Have you considered that somebody could actually take your advice thinking that you fully know what you are talking about? I would rather that you give general advice on how to build that "exponentiality" by having side income, investing in stocks etc., instead of oversimplifying and calling 9to5 jobs a "scam".

Exponential growth either way.

Option 4: Not being dumb with money and learning how not to put yourself into debt while earning a degree. I came out of college with a Bachelors and only 5k in debt which I paid off in about 3 months. I'm only about 5 years into my job and make just shy of 80k so where is that option?? I worked and earned grants to pay for school. In the end its about money management. Side Note: Larry Page - 100k in debt starting google... net worth today 55.5 Billion... debt isn't always a bed thing. It's how you hedge it.

I am not sure if the internet is offering the same opportunities now that were there even only 5 or 6 years ago, at least in the markets I know the most(which are in the EU). I think you have a point in demonising 9 to 5 jobs, which are however a necessity in our society, but I feel you missed the point when isolating the debt as a cause of wealth loss. Debt can be extremely valuable: I own a house in London whose rent can cover up the cost of my mortgage and still make profit on top of it. That is an excellent debt to have because the asset repays itself on top of generating equity year on year. What really brings people to 9 to 5 and educate themselves is the necessity to front expenses and responsibilities: rent/mortgage, food, healthcare(in the US, fortunately in Europe is funded by the states) and especially FAMILY. If I decided to ditch my 9 to 5 tomorrow and was alone, maybe I could have been able to somewhat manage while working FT on my business or maybe looking for a part time consultancy job. But with a wife and children the necessity of certainty becomes a massive problem: earning 50% less than what you expect might result in you not having how to put food on the table of your child.
