Accented Cinema - Episode 59
Originally I wasn't going to talk about this film, as I thought it doesn't really fit this channel. But the more I think about it, the more frustrating this movie becomes, so, let's turn this frustration into motivation, and see if we can learn something from the failure of Ghibli.

This is why it always pisses me off when people say that Goro Miyazaki lacks his father's talent. Yeah, of course he wouldn't do too hot considering he was thrust into a director's position despite _having no animation experience_ and was left high and dry by his father. The fact that Goro still bothers to try is both admirable and depressing considering no one is still willing to give him a fair shake.

he needs to learn boundaries and to say no. maybe he'll grow a spine someday, but otherwise, can't help but just feel bad for him. Edit: in response to comments saying I'm "judging" him. It's not my desire or place to, I was just commenting on the fact that a lot of his misery seems to stem from a lack of self worth. And if that is the case I can only feel sorry/bad for him. There's not much else I can do.

If I worked my ass off honing my craft for a few decades, only for my non-experienced son to be given a directing role off of my coattail, and for the same directorial debut film to be set ablaze by filmgoers, damn right I'd be pissed. If Goro had spent years under his father, or any of the Studio Ghibli staff, working and getting experience then maybe H. Miyazaki wouldn't have thrown a fit. @Random Task N-Word I would disagree. Goro and Hayao don't share the same vision for film making and it's a lot of pressure for someone like Goro, to be expected to create a masterpiece like his father. Especially since whenever Goro has been film director, his father has always never helped him through it. What if you were expected to meet high expectations and no matter what tools you had, the person who you aspire to be like, never helps you learn? Is never is satisfied with your efforts? No wonder Goro took up architecture. It's clear Hayao's expectations for his son has stopped Goro from deciding what he really wants in the film industry.

He built his company from the ground up. At one point I worked for a him. I know the basics of stone; I even know it a bit more than many people. But if someone gave me my Dad’s tools and gear he’s amassed over the years (literally everything you need to do a perfect stonework job) and told me I had to take over a couple of his jobs, I might be able to complete the task, but it would suck. All that said, the architecture is really really great. Everything is so detailed and looks real. He shouldn't pressure himself to follow his father's footsteps, he could just hire a successor to create a dynamic story. All in all, he loves architecture and should follow that dream.

@ItachiUchiha-gf4fz
@ItachiUchiha-gf4fz Год назад
@@thedeliveryboy1123 the problem is that Ghibli is the standard for quality anime and it's rich story telling. If he does that then he'll be driving the reputation of the company. This is why traditional anime is still preferred by so many people. In art, you mainly focus on the focal point. If everything is highly detailed then the people watching it will be overwhelmed on where to look at. Attack on titans and violet evergarden produce an incredible anime by combining traditional and 3d buildings. It has style and what makes an anime Anime. Disney and pixar animation focuses on clear visual story telling architecture is just not as important or it's important but other visual cues like colors is more important. Well if we have a theme focusing in architecture then this might work but then again it doesn't have to be always true to reality or realistic as possible. Breakingdown architecture by showing pillars, foundations and other constructing elements is more necessary than to show the frosting on cake.

@@thedeliveryboy1123He could make a film about his own situation. The son of one of the most successful and highly-regarded directors in cinema history deals with internal and external conflict and pressure of following his father's legacy. However, he never had a passion or drive for film-making, and is doing this not for his own reputation, but to prove to the people around him (the people giving him the most pressure) he is able to achieve the heights of his father. In an unfortunate set of circumstances, his own father looks down on his son's inexperience and incompetence, and provids no further morale or guidance to propel his son's seemingly misguided career. The son continues to feel more and more burdened. Through his struggles and failures, he slowly realizes he shouldn't be dedicating his energy on projects meant to prove he's just as capable as his father, but should rather pave his own path and explore his true passions, even if it means having "ordinary" goals It would be a great film going over the complex feelings a person feeling pressured and lost in all sorts of ways. A movie about being destined to fail unless he could beat the odds is something that's not often explored. Unfortunately, he doesn't. So many great lessons and themes to be presented, such as the importance of supporting and connecting with people, why failure isn't bad, to not bully yourself for failing to follow someone else's near-impossible career, discovering your own identity, resolving internal and external pressure... list goes on and on.

A movie about a neglectful perfectionist workaholic father, and the troubled son who can't live up to his name. All with a focus on scenes featuring gorgeous, intricate architecture. Winding stairs that signify his wound up thoughts. Dark, tall, moody buildings in moody scenes. Big empty spaces to signify his emptiness inside; the hollow space he is trying to fill with his own creativity, but can't, because his father's words and work and expectation clutter it instead. He could really focus on those backgrounds and buildings if that is his artistic passion, using colors that represent his moods. A journey of a young man with an unhelpful family finding himself artistically. Wholly relatable. I'd watch that in a heartbeat. IF he even wants to make another film. If he steps down and flourishes somewhere else entirely, no one has any right to judge him. I really want to see him happily in his true calling. I hope his Japanese audience is as sympathetic for him as the English comments he may never see.

Her grandfather told me Hayao humiliated his son in front of his entire first grade class over a drawing Goro has made. Literally tore it up and screamed at him so loudly it scared the entire class and their teacher. And not to mention Hayao is a MASSIVE jerk to wait staff at restaurants. I think a lot of the problems mentioned probably stems form Goro being an architect. Basically, he's used to creating a static background and floorplans, not creating live characters. And in architectural pictures, you do not want those pictures to look dark, and they often emphasize natural bright light that comes in. He trained in one type of art and was shoved into another.

@monaartsy2410
@monaartsy2410 3 года назад
I kinda agree and disagree. As and architect and artist who loves animation and 3d modeling, I can say, some of it depends on the style of the architect and artist. But not every architect out there make static backgrounds or use bland, flat lightening. Actually, the technology and the animation industry changed the ways architects present their works. In the 8 years of my architecture journey, I actually learned how to tell a story by my buildings and give it life with some dramatic lightening and even animation. You can watch many architecture post production processes on RU-vid. Many of them use motion blur effects, fog, water splashes, lens flare and other props to give their still renders some mood and life. It seems like people and cars are in motion and the trees are dancing in the wind, and it's an alive photograph. Not a lifeless render. And if it's in animation form, a professional architect never forgets the wind and the waves of the water. Goro's problem in my opinion, is passion. (Besides him probably not being professionaly educated for animation industry) He dose not have passion for animation and I understand him completely. When you don't have passion for something, you just don't want to open up a room for creativity and new technics. Be it animation or architecture. Your heart just won't flutter when you work on it, you have no feelings or connections towards what you're making. You just want to run. Just do it somehow and get away from it as soon as possible. So I feel so bad for Goro. Imagine someone takes your passion away and force you to do somethingyou don't like, in addition to you're not bad at it, but not very good at either. I just hope he realizes this and goes back to what he truly likes before it's too late.

These criticisms make me sad. As far as the visual quality goes, you could tweak animation curves and completely re-do the lighting; render it out again and fix most of the “minor” issues in, like, 1 or 2 months. That is the advantage of 3D, once the initial work is done, it’s there to build on forever. No need to completely reshoot or redraw everything, just render. What makes me sad is that it’ll never happen. That’s not how the industry works.

Ponyo is kind of this. Miyazaki intended it as an apology towards Goro for his absence when he needed him. Notice how in the film, Sosuke's father is absent from the family due to being out at sea, which pisses off Sosuke's mom and in general leaves an empty space in the family? Despite this, he still loved his child Sosuke dearly even when he wasn't there. Sosuke was meant to represent Goro when he was younger while the dad was him. So in a sense, even though Ponyo is a cute movie, it's also kind of the story between him and Goro.

My animator friends and I had long discussions on this subject and I think the one thing that this video misses is that the reason may be a logistical one as well; Earwig began as a technical development project (which is why they made their own software to create the CG - always a terrible idea) - it was meant to premiere on TV, which it did in Japan and produced mostly during the pandemic. In interviews, Goro doesn't shy away from their unfamiliarity with the 3d process, noting how they referenced stop motion films of all things (though obviously their artists are so unfamiliar with the lighting aspect that they were probably looking at it from a modeling perspective). TLDR I don't think it was meant to be compared to the other features - maybe it's unfair to do so. But these are not excuses for the finished product. For me, it still shows that Goro is just out of his depth and needs to stop directing things. He's a fine producer and a person stuck in the shadow of his father, but you can't trust him to salvage it the way Hayao does. He gets things done on time, not done well - and as Shigeru Miyamoto said "A good product long delayed is good forever, and a bad product released on time is also bad forever." And I can't help but imagine a lifetime of being compared to and berated by your father sucks out a bit of the passion that's essential to making wonderous animated film.

Hey guess what, if you want to test out new techniques, MAKE A SHORT! The main reason that Pixar’s mascot is a desktop lamp is because they started out by making numerous animated shorts where they would test out the lighting in a 3D setting. Every Pixar movie that debuts a new modelling or shading technique is prefaced by a short movie that explores the same thing. After a while, once you have filled your toolbox with new techniques that you have developed, you bring them all together into a feature length piece. What you don’t do, it’s just put a whole entire bare skeleton out there So people can watch you try and fail for 90 minutes to figure out what you are doing

My biggest problem with this movie is that it just looks like another Ghibli animated movie with cgi paint over it. They rarely take advantage of the fact that it’s a CGI animated movie; no dynamic camera shots, the skin looks like plastic, the eyes don’t shine or look natural, and the movement is very stilted and robotic. The team seem to forget that CGI and hand drawn animation are two different mediums and this rely on different tools and rules in order to present its world naturally. Disney’s 2D animation is able to be translated well into 3D because of how smooth the animation is (since its animated at 24 frames per second) but when a cgi character stays static for more than a few seconds, it looks jarring. It looks fine in any other Ghibli 2d movie, but the same can’t be said for a cgi environment. This movie didn’t fail because it’s in 3d. Computer graphics are capable of so much and I’m tired at this point of people putting the blame on the tools rather than the maker. Recent Berserk games tend to have more dynamic cinematic than anything from the 2016 anime because the team behind the most recent games knew what they were doing. Computer graphics and hand drawn are fundamentally different mediums of art and so can’t be treated so interchangeably.

Hayao Miyazaki had a strong passion for animating Earthsea since he was a young animator, and up until the mid-1980s, Hayao wrote many letters to Ursula K. Le Guin, telling her that he wanted to animate Earthsea, but after repeated rejections, finally he gave up. Around 2004, Hayao received a letter from Le Guin asking him to animate Earthsea. This time, Hayao refused, saying, "I can't do it anymore," but Toshio Suzuki, a producer at Ghibli, accepted the project "as Ghibli (not Hayao Miyazaki)." Since Hayao stubbornly refused to take over as director, Suzuki turned to his son, Goro, and Goro stepped forward to become an animation director. Had Le Guin accepted Hayao's offer a few decades earlier, the history of Japanese and world animation might have been very different.

That's not really the case with Goro. He loved animation as a kid. His father was pretty absent, so Goro was basically raised by his dad's movies. His mother didn't want him to go into the animation business (probably because of how absent Hayao had been), so he chose a different path. He went into architecture. It was only when Toshio Suzuki offered him a job that he pursued directing. He was unfamiliar, but not impassionate. His first film was Tales from Earthsea. He made really good choices in terms of art style. He had a good vision for the movie, but it was riddled with rookie mistakes. The plot was jumbled up into nonsense, the characters weren't properly fleshed out, and the dialogue was pedestrian. These mistakes weren't a lack of passion. They were a lack of experience. Next, he made From Up on Poppy Hill. That movie is fantastic and proves he has potential. Earwig and the Witch is not very good. He wanted to do something new for the studio, but it fell flat. This wasn't a lack of passion, which is evident by his excitement for the new movie in interviews. It was a lack of understanding in the medium. His resolve to keep making movies after criticism from movie critics, ghibli fans, and his own father proves that he is passionate. He just needs to learn. (Sorry for the rant)

Remember there are lots of better director want to work with Miyazaki. He has no animation background. He was able to be the director not because of his skill set but for having Miyazaki as his dad. You may can disagree with it but his work explains itself. I don’t really feel bad for him since he took the advantage of being his son instead of working himself up. I also think it is less about "2D vs 3D" and more about "Realism vs Stylization". A lot of animation, uptill now, have focussed on making things as hyper-realistic as possible. And currently, there is a pushback against this from fans of animation. If we wanted hyper-realism, we would have went for live-action. The reason why Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso are memorable, is because of their distinct style, which may not be realistic. I think we want to see more animation with distinct art-styles that are more imaginative and unique to the content and the artist - instead of everyone following the same set rules and principles and producing the exact same style.

Artists need to fail, a lot, to become good at what they do. There's no other way to level up. I encourage Goro and everyone to keep trying, keep failing, and try again ❤️ (and for the rest of us, we're lucky to do it without all the eyes on us 👀)

Earwing and the Witch just makes me think more that Lupin the first should be considered as the standard for 3d anime, (and one of the best 3d animated films of all time) and this is because the animation studio behind the movie, Marza animation planet (also known for their work in sonic unleashed pre-rendered cutscenes, sonic movie (in coperation with blur studio) an the short film Sonic night of the werehog) Knows how to use exageration even in realistic enviroments. (but not all the time they know when to exagerate and when not) Because: Animation IS exageration.

I am glad that TMS stayed relevant with their CG Marza Studio. It is sad that Ghibli is sacrificing their 2D legacy with generic computer animation.

The puppet version has so much more life in it in those few seconds of footage than the animated characters do in an entire movie.

Oh man do I understand Goro 😢 I'm in a similar situation and lived my entire life under immense pressure and would mess up everything just like him because no one thought it important enough to teach me "the magic" I was just expected to know how to do it because of my high profile name. I hope Goro finds happiness and people who respect and love him for the person he is. Goro and I deserve better.

I always love hearing your breakdown on topics like this. The static world and soft unchanging lighting are so off-putting when you notice them. Bad enough that the faces were done in such an uncanny way that tries to force anime designs onto a 3D model. It's one of the Japanese anime industries biggest hurdles that they care so little for 3D animation. Studios that implement it well like WIT, Orange and UFOtable are killing it while so many productions just outsource parts they don't want to animate in 2D which gives 3D a worse reputation. Even worse when a 2D animation staff are forced to work with 3D like this film and Ex-Arm. Nightmare fuel generators...

It's feel like he finally reached the happy ending when Poppy hill succeeded. I love that movie so much and appreciate him alot. Really hope that he's gonna be fine after this

That's what happens when a very famous man has a son. Psychologically speaking, a son always wants to surpass his father, otherwise most sons don't feel proud of themselves, have less self confidence and so on. Being the son of a legendary 2D filmmaker and being an adult in a time when 2D animation has mostly disappeared from major film studios does not make his situation easier. I hope Goro will find peace within himself oneday because sometimes, a son's father can be such a successful man that a son should not try to surpass him. It's okay to be less successful and known than your father. What really matters is what You want, not what people expect of You.

"Psychologically speaking, I'm stuck on ideas so old and so wrong, Carl Jung (who himself has been disproven since) had to reinvent the field of psychology just to get over this." The fact that we still have unapologetic Fruedians in the world is beyond infuriating.
